Time is running out to save the last remaining piece of railroad history in Reno's neighboring town - Sparks, Nevada. Stay until the end as we'll get a special look inside this massive building, which was built in 1903 by the Southern Pacific. The Union Pacific railroad wants its land back. Preservationists say no way! Learn the backstory of this amazing structure and why it would be a tragedy to let yet another historic building, which could be repurposed into something even more transcendent, bite the dust. They just don't build things like this anymore.

This is the place to learn interesting things about Reno, the state of Nevada and the American west! I've lived in Reno for 37 years (as an adult!). I've had a lifelong interest in history, and spend much time exploring and researching this wonderful area. I started this channel to share some of what I've learned. I produced a full-length documentary film on the history of Reno's Harolds Club casino in 2015.
Perhaps you're thinking of moving to Reno and are looking for background on the area, or you're already a resident and this content might help give you a sense of place. I shall endeavor to cater to both groups!
I'm also a craft beer enthusiast, and thought I'd talk about some of that scene here as well. I started homebrewing in 1992, and earned the Certified Cicerone designation in 2015 - this is a sommelier-like program for beer people.
Please subscribe, share and come along with me on this journey! Thanks and cheers!

@@funnlivinit as it should there isn't much of the southern pacific left to my knowlege, maybe the sacramento shops but railroads in nevada I am sure were not as plentiful as they were here in the midwest and related memorabillia, the shop looks like its still solid and in no danger of collapse but maybe I am wrong, look dont sit on your duff too often momentos from history are taken for granted and then too far gone to save or no one wants to step up, here we have the old freight shed and some stuff around it as well as small artifacts but its the only building left of our railroad days from the b and o but we did have the biggest roundhouse for 12 years that the b and o built itself, they had a larger one at the washington shops but here was the largest I found that they built, and it was the last roundhouse to have steam engines in it local lore says, before they were carted off and cut up, but by that time the b and o was in such bad financial straights they needed every penny the city had a chance to buy one of the old t 3s for scrap value but wanted one donated and either would not or could not afford the price so none were saved, and it was the class that pulled the last revinue run on the b and o in steam, we dont even have our old shops those too were leveled and now nothing but foundations, same with the old pennsy shops and bass foundry in fort wayne, bass was the largest railcar wheel caster in the world by volume around 1907 at 1000 wheels a day and made many stationary engines, we also dont even have the offices and shell of the old crestline ohio machine shops, people waited too long and the owner wanted too much so it was torn down as a matter of safety and that was where all the big experamental engines were kepts including the pennsy s1 that was the largest ridged frame locomotve ever made 143 feet built for the worlds far in 1939 crestline to fort wayne and fort wayne to chicago were the route it would run no nothing of it is left. as far as shops I mean we still got the old hump tower from the prr and overpasses as well as the old bakerstreet depot, but a far cry from what it was. In my city we could have also saved the old depot and offices but city sat around and railroad tore it down built a new termanal csx dont seem to really be sentamental about history they also look to want to tear down the old parsons roundhouse in columbus ohio there is a push to save it but the railroad dont look like they are going to budge its a solid building still though full of pidgens it was the major chessepeak and ohio terminal as well as hinton west virgina, would likely have been where the most powerful allegheny class steam engines were kept for their short life on the other end of the route in ohio from hauling coal in the mountains and people say it did not haul as much as big boy but the c and o has smaller sidings so it limited the size of trains they could bring, they also hauled 40 + troop trains in ww2 longer then any other I have know of, and longer then the 34 cars pulled by our engine nkp 765 on the new river trains and about twice as powerful, but they want to tear it down. also putting something on the national registry of historic places is not iron clad they wont tear it down it only makes it harder, but if the function of a building is changed the designation can be stripped of it like they did soldier field when they remoded it, and a local church here they tore down as it was in bad shape and a park built in its place with some of the bricks and old cross from the top put on a monument on the corner where it stood, which was a shame it had murels al along the barrel vault celings in the inside and one of a few romanesque style churches in down town the rest are gothic.

LA of course lost downtown ones to blight and yes some new buildings... Still its original core like the Fashion District has a SURPRISING number of very early 20th century skyscrapers then. Beauties clad in like white terra-cotta that would be at home in Chicago done in their old style. Sadly, not sure gentrification is moving as fast there? Still seems by street-views many will survive now. They survived all the earthquakes of the past they deserve to. Probably could have saved more 50s early 60s Goodie architecture that it had. Still those that remain are probably saved now. There are links that have many mapped that survived and their large signs that inspired the Jetsons old TV cartoon a style that LA had the most of. Houston was one of the worst to remove old Houston downtown for parking lots to await a shiny new city. Many for just large parking lots e and also to build humongous banal parking garages. It raised buildings on its Main St that were its flagship retailers of old... a remnant block remains the most vibrant part now part of a historic district.

On one hand it is within UP's right to demand the building be vacated if the terms of the lease were indeed violated. On the other hand - UP and other railroads have made it almost a tradition to be vindictive and not work with communities when pushed even a little; thus destroying all that should be saved. As a PA resident I'll bet anything the only reason why NS hasnt shut down Altoona yet is theyre too cheap to find land elsewhere to buy and build new.

Reno native here (currently living in Fernley). In the 80s/90s John Asquaga used that building for many purposes. A interim warehouse, a motor pool garage and venue for sheep auctions, among others. I can remember stringing wire through it's internal skeleton for auctioneer speakers and visiting the motor pool for repairs many times (John Asquaga would keep his vehicles until the wheels fell off :). I'm now a railfan and would hate to see this building go the way of the Mape's hotel where I provided services to the Sky Room (the demolition was a true travesty in my opinion). Love your videos. Back in the day when the Rolls-Royce Owners club would charter private rail cars out of Oakland, Sparks was a popular destination for us! We would arrive in Sparks while a switcher engine would take our car off of the northbound Amtrak and put us on a siding while we were in Reno or visiting Mozart and Harrahs collections. Our hotel of choice would send an elegant bus which we would step off the private car and directly into the bus while the driver transferred our luggage.....Fun times!!

I've always wondered what that building was. I don't think it would make a good concert venue, but it could easily be earthquake retrofitted and converted to a bunch of restaurants and shops, as the Reno post office was a few years ago. Given the closures in the area, including Karl's Silver Club (which I think later was called Bourbon Street), it would be a boost for the area. The Sparks outlets might whine a little but that would be ridiculous. I think the Mapes and Holiday might have met their demise during that EQ swarms of 15? years ago, but seeing as this building is still standing, it should be preserved. I'm a bay area resident, but I've been working in Reno as a musician for 28 years. I consider it my second home and care a lot about what happens to the area in the future. :-) Thanks for your wonderful videos!

The design, engineering and workmanship that went into the construction of the building is awesome. Everything riveted together in the time before welding was introduced. It is more of a piece of art as it is of historical value. This needs to be preserved at all costs. It absolutely has to be put on the historical registry. It really needs more publicity to gain national attention.

Sad. Well built, architecturally pleasing, good potential with minimal imagination. Probably cost effective to bring it up to code. Although I question its acoustic characteristics for concerts. Change isn’t always progress. Hey Steve; Do you remember the name of the drugstore that had the sit down soda fountain counter - I think it was around First and Center. Thus I took some time to contact both the Union Pacific Railroad as well as the Councilman in regards to this issue. Thank you for sharing this, not sure why this particular situation leaves an impression on me, but it guts me to see yet another example of short term short sighted vision and a loss of another historic site, in a country with such a short but interesting history. As someone who moved from the UK with much history and many preserved buildings and artifacts. I moved to the US, became a citizen and now living the other side of the Mountains from Sparks a regular visitor to Reno,. I see so many historic buildings saved around the world, and in the UK during my visit back there last year, re purposed with a mix of modern with the old. You should not move forward without respecting the past. Some sites I visited on my last trip over to the UK was. St Pancras Renaissance hotel fronting the station, Battersea Power Station front and many others. Massive buildings once boarded up and slated for demolition at various times in their recent history, when I was growing up there as a kid. Now thriving buildings revitalized the areas, mixing the Old and modern. Take a look on line. I know Reno can do things like this like the old Post office building down town as one example. Lets see if someone can think a little out the box on this and find a way through, even a token gesture preserving some of the outer walls. Such a shame that there is not any creative innovation being put into this by the current UP owners of the site and a compromise on respecting some of the local and their history in some ways. No point in leaving it to rot for sure but it seems the sub lease situation could have had a different ending if there had not been another agenda and much short term small thinking. Very unfortunate statement they issued indeed. I really hope that something can be done with this site that includes the building. As you rightly said, once its gone its gone, as can be seen by the Round house . Is there a petition or local movement to help the re think , or do locals not realize, or not really care either way ? Thanks again and Cheers.

Thank you for sharing this. I am a railroad buff and enjoy seeing buildings used by the railroads. Evanston, WY has redone a U.P. car shop and it in the process of restoring the roundhouse, a little at a time. What they have done so far looks great! The car shop is used for an annual model railroad show and the roundhouse is a convention center which is also used during their annual train show. It also features a working turntable. It might be something the Spark City Council might like to take a look at as an idea of how their buildings could be repurposed instead of removed. Shops, convention center or a concert hall would be a great use of these historic buildings.

With all the money and ridiculous priced homes there in Sparks you would think someone would realize that space could become a very nice indoor market space with produce, meat, coffee shops, restaurants, boutiques and public meeting spaces. I'm sure I could come up with several other current mixed-use formats as well very easily. I can't see that property being worth more than $800k as is. With about $1 M in renovations and retrofits the total cost of build would be around 1.8 M. With a conservative monthly income projection of $15-20 k a month from lease income 8 years of rental/lease would bring just over $1.9 M thus repaying the initial capital investment relatively quickly.

This is the reality of historic preservation everywhere: even something really historic that somehow makes it through to the present day needs to face the demands of Modern Life to survive. Kingfield Station on the former Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Maine narrow gauge railroad was still standing well in the 1990s, over 50 years after the SR&RL itself was scrapped: it "made it". This was an important station on the line, so there were a lot of stories about it and a lot of old pictures: people all over the world knew about it from several classic railroad books. The Kingfield Dodge dealership decided they wanted to expand their lot, so they announced they intended to tear the station down. The Preservationist group was told they could take whatever they could haul away, but there was a deadline when the demolition had to take place. They actually considered sectioning the whole building and trucking it to their museum line, but in the end time and money got in the way and all they could save was architectural details like a few doors and windows. Everything else was lost. The punchline is a few years later the Dodge dealership got knocked out by a recession so there is nothing but an empty lot there today

Could make a nice railroad museum and bring more tourists and revenue. Sad to see history treated as rubbish.

If the current Union Pacific monopoly could figure out how to make astronomical profits with zero railroad or properties, they would do it.

I get what everyone says about it being historic. It is. BUT, you can't save something just because it has a theoretical value WITHOUT a PLAN to realize that value. If it is so important NOW that someone wants to tear it down, why wasn't it important 2 decades ago, 3 decades, whatever? It strikes me as the guy that ignores his wife and family until she says she wants a divorce and is moving out. Then he whines about how they are the most important thing to him. Even as they are giving tours and claiming the building is significant, the guy leasing an presumably making money off it has plywood sheets on the floor to cover leaks from a roof, it is piled with junk and looks more like a Hoarders Paradise. So my completely uninvolved and otherwise uninformed opinion is: Unless someone is actually going to make it into a concert venue (as the lessee suggested) or rehab it into a viable market place and multi-use area for the benefit of the city and the people...say your goodbyes and let the Owners (Union Pacific) use THEIR land. Sorry, that's just my worthless thoughts.

Born, raised and lived in Reno for 42 of my 44 years. I had family working for the railroad, my late stepdad was the last one. I have no particular love for the building, it's never been open to the public in my lifetime. So talking about using it as a concert venue is some strawman argument. Not that I have a say but unless it's opened to the public I don't care what they do with it. It's wasted as storage. Funny how now everyone cares about it.

Stop demanding other people pay for something you want. If you want to save it scrap up the money to buy it, and the money to maintain it.

Sounds like something foolish with poor planning to take it down. I would thing the Railroad and Town would respect there local History. Sounds like something they do here in Utah. You can destroy anything as long as you put up a historical marker and Name the New development after what they ruin.

You need those Liberal Preservationist to at least get the ball rolling also. Reno may not be that kind of town...... They saved many of old building in other cities especially 80s onward up North and East. Some areas it is not a core value and inhibits free-enterprising as nimby's in cities do to protect single-family housing or older low-rises from replacement for something new and larger that is out of character for the area. Still our solid single-homes are worth saving as once gone they are gone forever in a era multi-residential buildings are increasingly taking over with like huge forever HOA's.
