The flames are from 3 P&W turbines mounted on each engine that fed off the engine exhaust and provided 450 additional horsepower to each engine at take-off and as needed via an automated switch-on system per my father, the former Constellation pilot

Everything about this video, the sound(s), the sights, the utter elegance of the Connie, a pure beauty, yet, when her engines are doing what they do, the sound!. She's a beauty with a purpose and determination. Stunning filming, absolutely stunning, brilliantly done, in every aspect. I look forward to when my 8 year old Grandson, Ryan, experiences his first Connie. To see, hear and fee, I have no doubt that, as I did back in 1957, when I saw and went inside my first Constellation at QANTAS Base, Kingsford Smith Airport, the experience is indelibly imprinted, as with me, within your memory. There is nothing on this planet like it.

The Lockheed Super Constellation, such a beautiful engineering and artistic masterpiece. Superbly taken footage. Steady, well panned and composed - wow. 1957, as a little mite, a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Connie transported me, bro and the folks from Schiphol Airport, Netherlands to our eventual home in Oz via Kingsford Smith Airport, Sydney. I still remember the many hops in strange places and the wonder of the big bird. Dad worked at KLM and then Qantas, Sydney around that time. So nice to see your video, and I gather from the comments that only the Aussie Connie and the Swiss Breitling are to only ones still flying. Long may they grace the skies.

I'll never forget the bright blueish white flames coming out of those R-3350's exhaust at cruise.
@MidwestMike100
@MidwestMike100 3 жыл бұрын
The reddish flames are when the mixture is at full-rich, for takeoff and climb. In cruise the mixture is leaned back at higher and cooler altitudes, and in less dense air. :Leaning the mixture also helps conserve fuel, and over-fouling the engine.

This is beyond awesome, it is VERY, VERY special, for me. As a young boy of 7 years old, back in 1957, (born 6th August 1950), an Uncle took me to the QANTAS Maintenance base at Charles Kingsford-Smith Airport, and on a brilliantly beautiful sunny sunday afternoon, transported me, his nephew, to the stars. I had never seen a real aeroplane up close until then, and today, little did I know, I was seeing the best. The most elegant, the most beautiful, the Queen of the skies, a Lockheed Constellation!. Still now, I thrill, I have goosebumps, and as I type, I am rather emotional, (maybe a bit of pepper in my eyes from the cooking by the other beauty in my life), as I remember and type. That day was a blur of everything. Touch, sight, smell, colour, feelings, sound, and so much more. I remember looking up from the Captain's seat and back towards the tail, and up to the ceiling, and all around, my eyes truly wider than they had ever been, and ever would be. Wonderment, pure unadulterated, raw emotional gasping in awe, wonderment, at what I was seeing. This boy was gifted to see, for one afternoon, for the merest tick of time, and for the rest of his life, the most beautiful flying machine he would ever see, despite years later spending 21 years in the Royal Australian Air Force. If only this GrandPa, could do for his 8 year old Grandson, Ryan, what my Uncle did for me. I'll work on it.

@@ymmlspottingteam I am Stuart John Garfath, (twinstu50), - Ryan's GrandPa. Gentlemen, I'm 'working on it. Ryan is a curious nine and a bit year old boy, but he absolutely trusts his GrandPa in everything we do, because I truly, and with complete honesty tell him, 'When you're with GrandPa, I will never let anything hurt you', 'cause if I do, your Mum would be very angry with me'. He trusts me without hesitation. Therefore, without notice, arrangement or identification, I will introduce my Grandson, Ryan Paul Garfath, to 'GrandPa's first Aeroplane', Constellation. To walk up those steep steps (once again), hanging onto the too high handrail, (as I did), with his right hand, then stopping at the top, he will be in front of me, as I was with my Uncle way back then. I'll not say a word, just let him look,..... into the hushed inside, right and left and all around. Unknown. Wonder. The most quiet sound. Smell. Feel. Touch. Walking down the aisle running my (His), right hand over the armrests as I (He), passed, touching the cloth seats, looking out of the windows, looking every which way, hanging onto Grandpa's (Uncle's) hand, and so much more. My memories flood back, and I am smiling as I type, oddly, the word Love comes to me as I remember that day back in 1957, for Uncle and my first aeroplane, Constellation. Uncle was a nice person, but every time I think of, and so rarely hear or see a Connie, I smile and remember that day, because that day made my life, my future Wife's, our two Sons, and quite a few others, in every way positive. because Uncle walked me up those port rear stairs.

Pretty awesome huh. Each of the 4 R-3350-42 engine has 3 PRT's (power recovery turbine). At max take off throttle, each PRT puts 150 HP back to the crank shaft. That's 450 HP per engine at METO power. Plus the flames! I can remember back in the 50's watching the flame on the big radials climbing out.

Turbo-compound (and supercharged) actually, really the only aero engine ever mass-produced with this feature, everyone always wonders why there's three (seemingly random number) exhaust "pipes" on an 18 cylinder engine lol. That's just how many power recovery turbines each had. I would NOT want to work on one of those things.

The R-3350 is really an engineering masterpiece - very complicated too, no wonder that they needed a separate flight engineer in the cockpit. The 3350 is the displacement in cubic inches, or 55 liters, and each engine consumes something like 5 liters of lubricating oil per hour. But then again, up to 3700 HP is a LOT.

The Lockheed Constellation is the WW2 airplane. Qantas's Super Constellation flies to South-East Asia, Hong Kong, Japan and the US for some world tour charter flights and it performs in the Australian International Airshow.

there is not a more graceful flying air plane then the connie, I sure miss working on these beautiful air frames. Yrs gone by and wish I had them back. I had more fun riding on them, volunteered every time one would go up. over seas in Thailand and here in California.

Each engine has three turbochargers and they are flaming as long as the engine was running.
@n6mz
@n6mz 6 жыл бұрын
Not quite. Those are "power recovery turbines" not turbochargers. Each turbine recovers about 150HP from the exhaust stream at takeoff power. That mechanical power flows directly to the crankshaft via reduction gearing and a fluid coupling on each PRT. At takeoff power the engines are operated with mixture controls in auto-rich which means that there's enough partially burned fuel to re-ignite after the turbines. It re-ignites because the turbine blades and housings are cooled by ram air which is hot enough and has enough oxygen to ignite the rich exhaust gases as they pass through the turbines. The non-turbo-compound versions of this engine (Wright R-3350) don't have the lovely exhaust flames although the B-29 in which my dad flew did emit a bluish glow from the 8 turbocharger waste gates (yes that version had GE turbochargers, two per engine). The crews hated that glow, it made them easy for the MIGs to find at night over Korea.

Very good explanation about these great Wright R3350 engines. I knew they were power recovery and not true turbos that compress air for intake but I just wanted to simplify it for our readers. Each of the three units is driven by super hot gas from the exhaust manifold and adds power by fluid drive to each engine adding extra power. GE turbochargers on the B29 were true turbochargers. Wright engineers had plenty of teething problems with this setup. R3350 was the only mass produced turbo compound manufactured. Once the problems were solved it was a great engine powering many kinds of aircraft.

My mum told me about flying the atlantic in a constellation, she said she looked out at the engines and saw flames told the stewardess that the plane was on fire. she said oh no its not on fire thats just the exhaust a few hrs latter there was a real engine fire and it took two calls to notify the crew before they shut the engine down cuz it was just a kid being excited. i think she was only 7 or 8. when they came back they were on a 707 a few years latter. no fires.
