The Beifong family is the PERFECT example of why you need to trust your children enough to give them freedom...but discipline properly so they'll know right from wrong. Maybe it's because her father is too stubborn or doesn't have it in him to accept the things she has accomplished, maybe in his eyes, Toph is just a helpless little girl, giving him the thought of her not being able to accomplish anything great in her life or others, but obviously we can see that she is much more better than that, and this is possibly what drove her father to 'hate' her, maybe seeing others who have a disavantage physicaly or someone who is 'lower' from his standards (regardless of flesh and blood), being succesfull in their lives, drove him to pure jealousy(?). I don't know, just my theory. (Sorry for my english)

On the bright side Toph and her father made amends that the end unlike Zuko with his father.

Yeah, Zuko was pretty level-headed though. I mean he did make a lot of mistakes, but given his upbringing him not turning out like Azula or Ozai in general spoke volumes. Also, he had his uncle to mentor him. Basically Zuko's children had the kind of upbringing that Zuko would have had if Iroh was his father.

Because Zuko had the best parental figure that ever existed in history. Which is of course his uncle. Kids learn by example Zuko learned how to deal with angry children and edgy teenagers and how to teach both love and responsibilities all while keeping it light-hearted. (And probably how to make a calming tea - be it for the angry kind or for the frustrated parent). Aang as the future Avatar was shown favoritism and after that he lost his parent figure quite early and had to fend for himself. Katara could have balanced it out but she lost her mother when she was a child and although she and her father loved each other the way the water tribe (even the southern one) divided jobs meant she saw it as normal that a father would spend more time with the child that has to learn from him, just as Sokka would spend time with their dad and she with her grandmother. Toph's parents aren't even worth mentioning. They were overprotective and she was overcompensating. Moral of the story: as always the solution is to be found in Iroh's wisdom. And tea, of course.

What about Katara? She doesn’t seem to favor any of her children more than the others

I'd say it's a combination of learning from her mother's (and grandparents') parenting mistakes, and probably Baatar. Not that we know anything of his past, but he was a turning point in Su's life and the reason she founded Zaofu, so I think it's a safe bet that he was an excellent influence and a good father.

Actually ..by technicality she did end up suffering for what she did it might not be the karma you're looking for but she did suffer. Her son straight ass betrayed her... even though he didn't want to harm them he did flat ass betray her quite like she did her sister and mother only worse honestly :/ She did get her justice YEARS later. Suyin learned "Oh this is how it feels..." Think of it that way...Toph covered her ass because she was within a position where she actually had too, the world was different and she ended up sending her kid away to deal with that attitude.. Samantha Roars People do change as they grow. And good and bad things happen regardless. I wouldn’t say she suffered for what she did but I’d just say she suffered (I still see were your coming from though). But for me It’s just a coincidence. I was a pretty bad kid but now I am way better then before. As you grow things changed we all grow up either better, the same or worse. I guess that’s why Su is my favorite character even if she hadn’t been in a lot of episodes. But she’s grown into a better person and you wouldn’t think she’d deserve any punishment for her wrong doings because growing up and eventually changing bad behavior to a good one already brings justice to oneself. @@kaiko8085 Toph also sent her to live with her parents (or least her father i believe.) and they took the mantel of raising Suyin, aka being strict on her. So she became tame. Suyin isn't a bad person she was literally a bratty kid and Lin was just an overachiever and strived for her mothers attention in different ways and she actually was willing to betray her sister by throwing her in jail versus just telling their mom. She was already letting her go many times but to do that is cruel regardless (I limit it to murder lol tnrow their ass in prison for that). Lin was just desperate for love.. but she is the one who turned them away... aka Tenzin. She could have been married and happy but Tenzin said they didn't just fight but they full out fought and Lin probably was abusive...She was just bitter and soon enough she grew up she changed.

As we saw with Zuko: One must receive love before being able to give it to someone else. I'm certain she will make up with him, because he could be her Uncle Iroh. It will take longer with her (it took Zuko 3 1/2 years),but in the end they'll be the closest siblings in Avatar.

When you read the comic Azula and Zuko finally meet their mom but their mom losing her memory and change her face and their mom say that she loves both of them. Azula, still in denial, decided to leave while Zuko stayed. And later on, Azula dressed up as a ghost that likes to kidnap children along with her asylum friends (Azula went to asylum after last season of TLA) and Zuko with Team Avatar stopped them. In the end, Azula wanted to tell Zuko that he is the same as her and Ozai and made Zuko feel guilty and as a fire Lord, Zuko telling the people that he needs to learn a lot to take responsibility and Azula watched it from far distance and then she dissapeared.

Molly H! I totally get it haha. But at the same time Lin really got the short end of the stick. Her mother and sister both betrayed her and the love of her life dumped her for someone significantly younger. I feel for her, she’s never had anyone to open with ever since then. I think she found comfort in hating Su her mother and Tenzin, maybe she didn’t want to mend things because it was the only feeling that stayed with her and letting that go would be like letting everyone she ever loved go. Sometimes it feels better to encase yourself in the pain because it’s all you’ve ever known. I think that was the case for Lin. :(( which is such a shame

That's why I expect she only tried once, since she stated that her and Toph cleared things up once a long time ago, they literally stated they invited her to clear things up once, then just forgot about it cause they are so carefree. And wtf are you talking about, she had nothing to fix with Toph. Toph was a horrible mother and wanted both of her kids to be carefree since she was so restricted as a child, even Lin mentions when she meets her mother again that even when she did ask for help she just couldn't as a mother and she never acknowledged her hardworking first daughter, just showed more sympathy and tried to protect the younger one who was always the one causing trouble, not Lin.

Not really. Suyin tried to force her way back into Lin’s life and played the victim when she couldn’t. Some relationships are damaged beyond repair and should not be fixed.

@@quantasium That's not what I said. Sure some relationships deteriorate too much, but it's childish to hold onto all those negative feelings regardless. At some point, you have to do something about it.

People can change for the better but it doesn’t take away the harm they once caused. Becoming better doesn’t grant someone a “get out of accountability” card. Maybe Lin should’ve learned how to manage those feelings better but she has every right to feel the way she feels towards two family members who continuously disregarded her feelings, feelings caused by THEIR past actions.

It's one thing if Lin wanted nothing to do with Suyin or Toph even after they changed but it's another that she continued to indulge in hating and resenting them even if they were far away from her.

Bro, su isn't the one who got hurt by her own family member. It's almost as if you're betrayed man. It hurts.

su never apologized for her actions or anything that she did. All she told Lin was ‘it’s been years.Get over it’ how does that make her good. It’s like someone harming you and never apologizing and just expecting you to get over it because they’ve ‘changed’. After Lin felt better,she apologized to everyone for anything she’d done to them. Even zuko apologized to aang for all the harm he ever caused but what did suyin say? ‘Get over it’ no ‘I’m sorry’ or ‘I just wanted to apologize for what I’ve caused’. She claimed she had changed just because she built a city and had kids. She couldn’t ever take responsibilities for her action.
