Same with British payphones. The cash boxes on the 1930's version (the Buttons A and B type) were just about impregnable - made of heavy steel with a 6 lever barrel key lock (like Bell, each cash box key was different). Then they developed a newer type in the 1960's and as forced entry had never been a significant issue the cash boxes were of weaker construction and there was a spate of break-in's and thefts. They quickly had to beef up the strength of the cash boxes.

Its absurd how many businesses are willing to sell out their reputations. I've seen it in almost every industry I can think of. A well earnt reputation decades to centuries in the making destroyed by selling the rights to their name on total trash. Often there is a temporary bump in share price before it collapses, and often this ties in with a group of key execs retiring and selling their interest in the company. Of course regularly this is not the case, and for whatever reason a good company with a future decides to suicide its reputation with seemingly little logic behind it. If Squire intends to keep their reputation, they would do well to sell such trash under a different brand name (or preferably not sell it at all).

Its funny as my Reliant Robin has car door locks made by Squire and surprisingly my ones are difficult to pick but comparable era Squires could be opened with a spam key or broken off bit of windscreen wiper. I had the local lock chappy overhaul the locks (J Reynolds of Gillingham did a smashing job) and even done me a set of new not worn keys, sadly the boot is a Rover Metro key and the ignition the easily broken off Lucas ignition set but at least I know spam key or wiper bit toting ne'er do wells won't be making off with me Reliant :D In the eighties, it was common for people having missed the last train would find an old Mini or Ford Escort, nip off the windscreen wiper for the necessary bit and jiggle their way to a free ride home leaving the ahem "joyridden" vehicle in an easy to find place once wiping off any fingerprints.

From "Snap On" tools to so many other companies who have licenced their name and their associated reputation for quality (design, manufacture tolerances, customer service, etc.) I have never understood why. Many of these products enjoyed a customer base that was so solid, people didn't even "shop around," they just bought the same brand over and over. In other words, brand loyalty was really staggering, nearly almost cult-like devotion. So much so that in some cases, it took years and in some cases over a decade for people to both catch on, be convinced that something had changed, dealt with the mental dissidence and loss of face for continuing to recommend the brand (or having done so), and finally decide to move on or at least shop around. Not to mention that if I have a bunch of tools that aren't the real brand, especially if I'm not sure which, I feel taken advantage of, bamboozled - a highly unpleasant feeling I really dislike experiencing...... As just one example, Snap On tools were often considered an heirloom purchase being passed down through generations - that's not a reputation for product quality and customer service that is easily achieved. As another example, I am still using my grandfather's Craftsman metal drill with a chuck key. The only thing I've had to do is oil it from time to time and replace the rubber band the chuck key uses to attach it to the cord and allow it to be both easily manipulated and never get lost. I plan to pass on the tools to one of my children as I am now a grandparent myself, teaching my kids and grandkids how to buy quality, work safely, and take care of tools. I never wanted to be that grandmother that complains about "how things used to be" but the fact that if my printer breaks, its cheaper to just buy a new one than get it repaired just flat-out depresses me - As does these companies selling the use of their brand to unsuspecting customers who are thinking they are buying a quality item when its anything but. Thankfully, I believe that LPL "gets" all of the above and his "Covert Companion" looks pretty darn solid and I plan to buy one a little later this spring. I have bought LPL and Bosnian Bill's Disc Detainer Pick from Sparrows and the thing is ROCK SOLID, clearly a high quality design and build (Not to mention incredibly reasonable, if not downright inexpensive for what you're getting, again, design and build). .

Hey, that's a nice reputation you've got there Squire. Would be a shame if something were to happen to it.

Would be a correct comment had it not been that MasterLocks are worse than the Chinese locks.

Masterlock has one model that does not need the tool, can open with pressure on handle.

It's pretty remarkable that I can now see the design of a lock and predict which attack LPL is going to use against it.

Surely just using concave wheels and having tabs preventing a thin strip being directly inserted would make this a lot better? Seems a very minor design change that would help a lot.

LPL is there anything that can be done for those locks on a utility bed ? I got my tools stolen and the thief used a pair of scissors from the Dollar store to unlock each lock on each door. There has to be thousands of construction workers that get their tools stolen from those cheap utility door locks every year.

With all the KZfaq Shorts becoming more popular, soon the LPL will forego his banter before the picking and just show us the 20 to 30-second clips of the lock being picked.

The point is he identifies the picks as being available in his store then get on with the rest of the video. The promotion isn't obnoxious and doesn't drag on until you are biting your fingernails in frustration.
