Nice dig. I think you were quite correct in thinking people were drinking the extracts as a alternate alcoholic beverage. I know in Canada sometime in the mid 1900's that extracts (vanilla in particular) were no longer allowed to use alcohol as a base product. Nice to see that Bradon Empire beer bottle. As beer bottles were reused it is possible it made its way south of the border around prohibition time. I've no doubt that if you continue digging in northern North Dakota you'll come across more.

You are correct about the extract. Vanilla extract and Jamaica Ginger was often drank as an alcoholic beverage. I've seen many pumpkin seed and coffin flasks with Jamaica Ginger labels.

Funniest thing. I was watching a cop show the other night. The chic was pulled over for being all over the road..she was trashed. Her drink of choice was vanilla extract..the car was loaded with empty bottles, every kind, every size..some still unopened..I was shocked and had to laugh. I had just watched your episode of all the extract bottles..they weren't baking..lol

I'm having a little difficulty with the Sanborn maps... Some clearly show outbuildings labeled 'privy' or other names.. but most do not. Should i just assume Any smaller structure in the 'back' area of a property is a privy? Also, i have seen the circles that indicate 'air shafts', either wooden or brick framed. Are these some kind of indoor privy, or something else? Thanks in advance, whoever is reading this.
