A fundamental part of rugby is that only the ball carrier can be tackled. There are various instances here of people being tackled after they have passed the ball. If the referee is satisfied that the tackler was committed to the tackle and had no chance to pull out, then it is legal. If there is a discernible delay, or is early before the target receives the ball then it is a penalty offence. Additionally, they are not permitted to tackle a player who has jumped to catch the ball and is still off the ground. That is virtually certain to result in a yellow or red card to send the offender off the field. Also they cannot block players who do not have the ball.

Watch “Nimh’s rules of Rugby Union explained” on this platform, it’s a good video that covers everything a person new to the sport would need to know. Also on the 2nd February the Six Nations tournament starts again for 2024, the Six Nations is a yearly international tournament between Italy, France, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England. I think NBC & CNBC are showing the 6 nations game live in the US.
@MogzThom1236 ай бұрын
Rugby is continuous. It’s played for 80 minutes in 40 minute halves. Can only pass backwards to gain forward momentum. If the ball is dropped/passes forward it’s considered a “Knock on” stopping the play for a “scrum” to gain possession of the ball. If the ball goes out to “touch” in the “out of bounds” area. Possession can be won in a “line-out” where players contest for the thrown in ball, while being lifted. Players can kick the ball forwards at any point during the game to win territory. To score a “try” (like a touchdown) a player must enter the “end zone” and the ball must make downward contact with the ground. A “try” is 5 points a conversion (point after kick) is 2 points. During play, if a player is tackled, the play still remains ongoing, but players must contest for the ball on the ground in a “ruck”, players will basically fight for the ball, but as soon as the ball is passed from the “ruck” play continues. If an illegal play occurs i.e a dangerous tackle, a penalty is awarded to the team. A penalty can either be taken in the form of a scrum, 3 point kick over the posts, or kick into touch for a lineout. There are 15 players on the field 8 “forwards” (fat boys) and 7 “backs” (fast boys) Forwards: 2 props, 1 hooker, 2 locks, 2 flankers, 1 number 8. Backs: 1 Scrum half, 1 Fly half, 2 wingers, 2 Centers and 1 fullback. My head is hurting from thinking of other information, but there’s the basics😂

Great summary. But as we both know? It is WAAAAY more complex than that.
@GJRolo28 күн бұрын
Only slight correction, it doesn't have to be a kick into touch with a penalty, tap and goes and cross field kicks are also acceptable.
@robprosper57694 күн бұрын
Also, the lineout following a penalty is an attacking lineout taken by the team who kick it out, as opposed to a defensive lineout where the offending side lose the lineout feed to the other side.

The thing with rugby is that, like most international sports, there are both club and international sides. The World Cup is the most prestigious, and then there are two smaller annual tournaments, the Rugby Championship in the southern hemisphere, and the Six Nations in Europe. For club rugby, I'd suggest that the best to check out are "Super Rugby" (a best-of-the-best competition for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands) which is a league format, and the "Heineken Cup" which is basically the equivalent of the Champions' League in soccer, with the best teams from South Africa and Europe. There are other leagues that teams compete in alongside this, but if you're aiming to get into it by seeing the big names and stars, those are your best bets.

American football is classical music. Highly structured, everything in its place. A place for everything. Rugby is freeform jazz. Highly improvised and seemingly chaotic at all times. Can you only pass the ball backwards? Yes. As a P.S.: there's a video called Rugby explained for Americans (by an American) that - even with minor mistakes/interpretations - is a pretty damned good one to watch. Goat? Depends who you ask. But for us Kiwi's, it's Jonah Lomu (now deceased - age 40 - thanks to playing his entire career with kidney disease). Each rugby playing nation has their own competition. We start at ages 5/6. Play for our local club. Then college (high school) if good enough. Then a club if we wish to continue playing with the local club. Then if good enough, can progress to your national provincial league, then in NZ's case to professional rugby (Super 12 - the best teams from NZ, Australia, and South Africa). From there, to your national team.

The ball is always live whilst in the field of play. No forward passes but kicks go forward. Play stops when there is a penalty or ball leaves field of play or a score.
@christiaanjacobs6 ай бұрын
You can’t tackle a player not in possession of the ball so there's no intentional blocking like in the NFL and the tackle must be shoulder-height or lower with an attempt to wrap your arms. There are no downs like in the NFL where play is stopped and restarted with a scrimmage, but rather a ruck that's kind of like a mini-scrimmage when a player is tackled (who has to release the ball) and players attempt to push each other over the ball to gain or secure possession. Play is not stopped unless an infringement occurs and the ref blows their whistle to award a penalty, free kick or a scrum. The ref has the discretion to keep play going after an infringement if the team who didn't commit it has possession and benefits from play carrying on. This is called advantage and play can be stopped and restarted by the ref for the initial infringement if no advantage was gained.

Yeah rugby doesn't stop at the tackle. At most its a pause. You have to hold the guy down otherwise he will just get up and carry on. Once he is on the floor, he has to release the ball within a couple of seconds. If he has no backup, that will just mean losing it to the opposition (a turnover). His backup normally arrives instantly and a thing called the rook takes place. His guys will kind of pile over him and form an "offside line". The opposition cant walk around this line, if they want the ball they have to push them back over the top of it. (again a turnover). Often this is as much of a pause as you get in the tackle because his guys normally make the offside line and the ball is on the ground behind it, and the opposition often don't contest it in a big way, they will tend to be concentrating on positioning and tactics ensuring their line is good defensively. A lot of stuff around it is very controversial as it relies on the referees interpretation and point of view so much.

@ofs826 ай бұрын
I'd describe rugby as being a bit like if you took American Football, where each player has a build and skillset for specialised positions, only players play on both offense and defense, and when the tackle is made, there is IMMEDIATELY another snap so players have got to just fulfil the role of wherever they were at that point in time, and there's an infinite number of downs. A large part of tactics in rugby is trying to engineer mismatches so you've got more space, or the other team have the equivalent of a lineman covering out wide, or you have a defensive end running with the ball and the other team's quarterback trying to tackle him. That's also why you see a lot of kicking, because if a team doesn't like the defensive look it sees, they'll just kick and reset, because you can compete in the air for the ball, punting isn't giving up possession like it is in Americcan football.

You wanted to know what happens when they are tackled. That is when the fight for the ball (the ruck, google it) starts. Whoever can win it has the ball. Re legs, get strong. Squats, deadlifts, heavy or don't bother. Smash any opposition players off the position. Have a hard skull. Be able to sprint for 2 lots of 40 minutes. Or, stick with american football where you get breaks and have helmets and armour.

The All Blacks are a good team to check out and, from back in the day, their player Jonah Lomu!! And some of the players have a tape style band wrapped around their heads and this is because when in the scrum other players would grab them by the ears and, have on some occasions, ripped off chunks of ear!

When tackled in open play the tackled player keeps the ball if he hasn’t fumbled it. He must try to release the ball rearward. He could be prevented from releasing (jackling) and lose possession risking a penalty for not releasing. But to establish quick multiphase play the tackled player releases, his team mate redistributes the ball and so on. Each successive execution is called a phase. Fast flowing rugby with speed and handskills is a function of dominant possession through phases. Unfortunately too many outsiders coming to rugby get turned on by the big hits. Open phase play really showcases the best of rugby. As for physique, you mentioned tree trunks legs, physique is slowly morphing into something like uniformity pretty much wherever you play. Thought considerable height is needed for some forwards (Locks). A modern No.8 (a forward) like Ben Earl could play as back. Candidate for best ever: Jonah Lomu. Despite his colossal size he was a winger (No.11 I think). Fast. Unstoppable.

Probably best team is New Zealand and best player Jonah Lomu.

Many arguments over the GOAT depending where you're from. Jonah Lomu stands out. There are several major leagues across the globe. Standouts are the Super Rugby across Australia, new Zealand, South africa, Pacific islands and even argentina. The Top 14 in france is huge with lots of money backing it. Finally the premiership rugby in england. Saying this, there are many smaller leagues.

A player when tackled has to release the ball, the tackler has to release the player, then other players have to come in to secure the ball before the tackler and other players who are on their feet can reach for the ball and turn it over. This is why players on the team with possession come in to clear out players competing for the ball, if they bring them off their feet they are no longer allowed to compete for the ball.
