I have watched this SO many times and it brings me to tears EVERY TIME. Not just the pride about how far they've come, how respectful they are to each other's skills to showcase them like this, but just... the glory of this freaking arrangement. I love every second of this, but ESPECIALLY the way Mitch closes his eyes knowing what's about to happen at the end of his solo and then BAM.

In a group, you have YOUR talent, but you are willing to allow your talent to enhance the group. It is what makes PTX so unique. No one has an ego in being "the star." The GROUP is the star. They support each other vocally. Screw the "me."

Your reaction was pretty much what we all felt when we saw it live. I am an elderly female, close to 70, and frankly I didn't know Scott and Mitch were gay and I wouldn't have cared had I known. After this performance, I questioned why Mitch hadn't been featured more during the season and never really figured it out until later. These are five amazingly talented and gifted musicians. Their arrangements, execution, musicality and voices are just special, but there is something more with Mitch. I can't put my finger on it because I am not a musical person, I just know what I like and I like Mitch. I want him to have the most amazing life and to look back and know that he did this and was exceptional. I want all his dreams to come true and I am so happy that he is working toward that life. Thank you for joining the journey, Matt. I think you have a special gift also. You genuinely love music and when you love music, it will forever speak in your life. Nothing moves me the way music does. When I hear songs I can immediately feel what I felt when I first heard them. I have many passions in life. I love to read. I love dancing. I love art work but nothing is like music. Happy to have joined your journey and look forward to more of your videos. I know you are in Canada and I believe you have said you are in Alberta. I have to say, I have traveled through Alberta many times and it is such a gorgeous place. I live just below you in Montana and we have a very similar scenery. I live in the Rocky Mountains and love seeing the majestic mountains, lakes and waterfalls. Hope you enjoy where you are living.

YES!!!! The first ever true Mitchslap. They were so very smart to do that breakdown and give Mitch his moment. I never get tired of this performance. I still wonder sometimes if the judges had any clue what they would go on to become? I know most of the rest of us had no idea of what Pentatonix could be. And to think they almost didn't come to be because the record label dropped them right after the Sing Off, claiming acapella wasn't going to be profitable. They actually started off by posting little music videos recorded on an IPad to their KZfaq channel. And from there they became superstars.
@Eric1SanDiego1
@Eric1SanDiego1 Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the judges had a clue :) They probably enjoyed watching their meteoric rise and I'd be surprised if any of them did NOT attend a PTX concert (front row for free, probably). Does anyone know? I'm not so certain they almost didn't come to be due to the record company dropping them. That may have been a blessing in disguise. We've all heard stories of micromanaging producers wrecking a band because they tried to impose their will instead of trusting the group. We'll never know what might have happened, but we do know what did happen: They overcame and succeeded and did it themselves. They are DEDICATED to their craft, and all it would have taken for that to have been scuttled would have been a toxic relationship with the record label. Maybe it would've been fine, obviously. We don't know. All we know is that their journey led them to where they are today.
@kathyastrom1315

@@Eric1SanDiego1 After they won, Deke Sharon, the show runner, took them aside and warned them that the record company would screw with them in some way. I don’t think he expected them to be dropped completely, but the other two winners were retreated like crap by Sony and their albums were released with no promotion after being rushed out. The fact that Pentatonix was dropped entirely was probably for the best, because they didn’t have to resort to putting out an EP of retreads from the show performances and maybe one of two new covers in a matter of a few months. Instead, they were able to take the time to develop an expanded fanbase through KZfaq and put together new cover arrangements as well as write some originals, and then tour to promote the album.
@kathyastrom1315
@kathyastrom1315 Жыл бұрын
I don’t think anyone could have predicted how successful they became. They were an acapella group on a pretty low-rated tv show, and KZfaq music artists had never taken off onto Billboard charts before other than maybe one-hit wonders. The fact that they have (I believe-someone correct me if I’m wrong) become the third most-successful, in terms of album sales, tv music competition show winners, after Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson, was completely unforeseen by just about everyone, no matter how much they loved PTX after their win.
@Eric1SanDiego1
@Eric1SanDiego1 Жыл бұрын
@@kathyastrom1315 Oh I agree that most people probably couldn't have predicted the success they ultimately achieved (even PTX themselves!). I was simply stating literally that the judges probably had a "clue" based upon their experiences. I'd love to find interviews from them years later.

Every time I hear Sara Bareilles say "I think they could be competitive" I want to say, "Gee, Sara. Ya think?" Yes, there's a good chance the judges expected them to succeed. But expecting an a capella group to have the kind of success Pentatonix has was not in anyone's list of possibilities back then, IMO, especially when two of the founders were college dropouts and the third founder had only a high school education. I don't see how either Kevin's genius or Avi's operatic training could have been enough to overcome the perception of those deficits in the trio. I think that _The Sing-Off_ was created to popularize a capella, but before Pentatonix showed up they thought they were fighting a losing battle. Once they heard a season's worth of Pentatonix I think they thought that *maybe* they'd won the battle, but that it was still going to be a hard slog. It's hard to turn expectations around entirely and I don't believe it can be done overnight.

The chances of this group coming together was so infinitesimally small that only the powers that be in the universe could have made it happen. I’m glad they decided to do that to allow us mere mortals to have something to brighten our days. Three kids meet as children who love to sing and decide to keep singing together in school and local theater. As a side note, can you imagine trying to keep those three reigned in in high school choir? Scott, Mitch and Kirstie say that she did help them learn to blend better. They become life-long friends. Scott befriends Ben Bram who helps Scott get on The Sing Off. Ben introduces Scott to Avi. Scott talks Kevin into giving up med school at Yale and joining four strangers to compete on The Sing Off. They actually win the show. Sony drops them so they decide to start building their Pentaholic following on You Tube. Viral videos, and great music follows, and they get resigned to Sony. Avi decides to leave the group and they find another great bass in Matt. While Matt is not Avi, he is still excellent and I think he blends even better with the other members of PTX. If anything happens differently along that path Pentatonix does not exist, and the world is a lesser place.

Ben befriended Scott rather than the other way around. Ben was working for the Sing Off so they had an inside track and picking up Avi who had competed and won the ICCAs helped as well. I disagree about Avi of course. (Matt is a fine singer and not part of my comment.) Having tour burnout is no joke. Artists have died of it and substance abuse can become an issue just because of exhaustion and time changes on tour. He showed great maturity and insight in getting out before he reached that point. If you have never seen the video where he announced he would be leaving I think you should. Recently Avi gave an interview to NPR and said he didn't know if he would even continue in music at first. That he left before any of that happened and we get to enjoy his own music today is great.

There is an episode on the Superfruit channel where Scott and Mitch were talking about their New Year's resolutions for 2014. And the last sentence Mitch said before turning off the camera was: "Love myself more". And when you look back at the Sing Off's you can feel he was insecure. And then look at him now: singing Your Power all alone on a rooftop. What a wonderful evolution of Mitch Grassi.

{ love this performance not just for the song but more for their response to Mitch. It wasn't :We did it It was you did it. And the looks on Scott and Avi's faces when Shawn was praising him, they both looked like proud fathers. You Can see tears in Scott and Kirstie's eyes after he sings. The love and respect they have for each other is phenomenal in this day and age. You can see it every time the judges praise one of the group, the others are just beaming. To be so talented and so ambitious and so young and yet be so humble and loving towards each other is truely a miracle. There are a lot of talented groups around but Pentatonix is just special. I think you have fallen in love with these “kids” as people, not just artist (I can call them kids because I’m closer to 70 than I am to 60 😂) It’s a beautiful thing to watch. 🤗 I know you must have a long list of songs, but hope you get around to some of their originals. You will love “Be My Eyes”. Kirstin shines in this song and all PTX members (Matt as bass) are credited with helping to write it. “Sing” is a get up and dance, feel good song. Scott and Kevin helped to write it. Hope to see one or both of these someday. By the way, you are loved, valued and appreciated, too.

I don't know that they deliberately chose to save his solo performance for the last night. They were very on edge each week that it would be their last week. Mitch's father, Mike, has said that Mitch was so stressed out at this whole process that he felt he couldn't take the pressure and wanted to leave. I think that the rest of them were just not putting additional pressure on Mitch until he felt like he was on more solid ground.

3 eloquent moments in performance 12, in no particular order: One, The Gang Hug. (Cried my eyes out. Have frozen that frame a gazillion times just to see Mitch's smile.). Two, the way Kevin comes storming in sounding like a freakin' freight train as Mitch makes that victorious yell at the end of his solo. (Like the pair of 'em are sending a giant "f you" to the show producers, who had told Pentatonix to "mach it up" through the whole season.) Three, the way the four Pentatonix turn around and turn their backs to the world as they hand over the spotlight to Mitch and stay there motionless until he's finished the first part of his solo. LOVE watching you react to this performance, Matt

In the KZfaq documentary, "On My Way Home" (highly recommended), Mitch's father said that Mitch wouldn't sing to his family. He was so shy he hid behind the fireplace so they wouldn't see him (or he wouldn't see them). I can't cite any other sources verbatim, but I heard he was bullied and he was probably battling stage fright and shyness. Needless to say, he overcame that in the Sing Off along with his best friends. I think we got to see that unfold. Little did people know at the time that his Mitch Slaps would just get better and better over time as his confidence and talents soared. Please react to them winning the show. It'll bring tears to your eyes, but don't worry, we'll be right there with you. P.S. If you intend to watch "On My Way Home", I think you'll enjoy buying it instead of renting it because I've watched it like four times already so it pays for itself. However, before you do, please react to their original song, "On My Way Home" because it's featured in the video of course. You might also want to react to "Love Me Long Time" since that's featured as well. As far as I can recall, you've already reacted to the other songs that were heavily featured, but please let me know if you haven't seen the documentary yet as I plan to watch it again tonight and I'll take notes for you and compare it against your previous reactions.

I loved this season of Sing Off, because it didn't feel like a competition especially as it went along. The groups all seemed to get along and like each other and support each other, more of a 'we're going to perform for America every week and have fun with our friends doing it' vibe. The Dartmouth Aires (which came in second) were always on their feet clapping. Though if I was in one of those groups watching this performance, I'd probably be like 'well, we lost.'

I could barely watch the crowning moment -- and I saw it years after they won. They had to stand there waiting sooooo long for the announcement -- Kirstie and Mitch clutching each others hands, seemingly not breathing, and looking ready to pass out was excruciating to watch. Infinitely harder for them of course. I was almost holding my own breath even though I knew they had won. And done for the drama of the show. :(

Thank you for your wonderful, genuine reaction, Matt.. I always have tears in my eyes watching this too, watching them hugging Mitch, Kevin patting his arm, all grounding him and being happy for him.. they knew better than anyone else what a big moment this was for him, facing his fears and doing THIS.. this was an epic performance and your reaction did it justice ☺

Mitch had a lot of anxiety, so I'm sure he was terrified of performing solos, as was Kirstie, so Scott took the lead in a lot of the songs on the show.

Hello Matts Reacts. Wasn't this just special? All five of them are just so good. When the group turned their backs and Mitch was alone in front, it was epic, they gave him the stage for himself and he took it confidently. A moment to cry with joy for sure. That look when he looked into the camera - a star was born for sure. Mitchell Grassi = Singer, Vocalist, Musician, Song Writer, Performer Extra-extraordinaire. You have three more "Sing-Off" reactions to do - 1) PTX doing the winner's performance, 2) PTX on the following season as guests and 3) Superfruit doing a critique of the PTX Sing Off performances about four years after (Scott and Mitch are hilarious). PTX always has something new and different in every song they do. PTX has not put out any new music since last year's Evergreen Album - soooo looking forward to what will come from them soon. Christmas music to react to also. I just saw that you already reacted to Aha live from Singapore - I missed that one - going to watch that one - you must have had fun with that. Another suggestion "Somebody That I Used to Know" = PTX in the early days after the record label dropped them and they recorded in a garage to get the acoustics. Gifts and talent aside, they have some serious creativity and even more serious work ethic. Love your reactions. More PTX please.

In the early days of PTX, both Mitch and Kirsty lacked confidence when taking centre stage. I don't know if, in Mitch's case, it was in part connected with his sexuality. I'm just saying that... well, they were kids. They were incredibly talented and clearly put in all the work to do something with that talent. But they were kids and (maybe/apparently) lacked confidence. So I don't know if Mitch was purposefully kept in Scott's shadow when they did The Sing-Off. I've heard some dodgy stuff about the production (mostly around shoving Mitch and Scott's sexuality under the carpet)... maybe they really wanted PTX to have one lead singer. But Mitch was just 19, too. He skipped his high school graduation to audition for the show. I'm just grateful he was surrounded by friends who didn't take advantage of his lack of confidence to shove him in the shadow.

At the time of broadcast, the only major media outlet who was promoting The Sing-Off was the magazine Entertainment Weekly. They became big fans of PTX over the season, but they were fans of the show overall. When NBC didn’t bring it back in 2012, you could tell that they were irritated that the network was favoring its new favorite musical child, The Voice, over TSO. When PTX released PTX Vol. 1, its first album, in 2012, just about the same time that the season 1 winner of The Voice did the same, and outsold him by an outrageous amount (I believe that they charted at #14 whereas the other artist didn’t break #100), EW couldn’t help but rub it in the network’s face. They did the same after PTX’s first Emmy-the headline the next morning was “Emmy Wins-The Sing-Off: 1; The Voice: 0.”

FYI about Mrduckbear11’s videos from the SingOff season 3 finale -- -- Three groups are left and each does a “Final Performance (1)” which includes a trip to a charity, a song and the judges’ final comments (voting is over so this doesn’t count) -- Then the top three each do a “Final Performance (2)” with one of the judges, except for some reason Shawn didn't sing so Pentatonix sings a 98 Degrees song with Nick, the host. -- Then there are more performances - Top Ten Groups Guys, Top Ten Groups Girls and Smoky Robinson with the 4th place group, Afro Blue -- Then MrDuckBear11 has a "Finale Night - Sing Off 3 - Final 3 to the winner” video that has the last 18 minutes of the show, including judges’ advice to each group, elimination of the 3rd place group, a video for each of the final 2 showing their history on the show, announcement of the winner and then PTX sings one last time. (FYI - when each group is eliminated during the show, they sing one final “swan” song as they walk off the stage, so PTX does theirs at the end.)

I have a theory and it’s probably just me, but there seems to have been a shift in momentum starting with Mitch’s tremendous solo. It seems to me that before Mitch, the goal seemed to be NOT to LOSE the competition…after Mitch’s spot on and surprising performance, they, all five…were like “We’ve GOT this puppy!!!” They finished the song on pure raw emotion!

This was the first video i ever saw of them in 2020 when we were in lockdown (UK here!) I cried bucketfuls of tears and was in total awe of them. I went down a rabbit-hole with Hallelujah and that was it for me, i was totally invested. The five of them being in my life daily made my world a little bit brighter and i know you get that. Matt, the producers of _The Sing-Off_ did everything they could to prevent the fact that Mitch and Scott are gay from becoming known. They instituted a rule, which was in effect *only* for season 3, that each band had to have just one lead singer, chosen at the beginning of the season, who would be their lead singer in every performance, and they didn't allow Pentatonix to choose their own lead - they informed Pentatonix that their lead singer had to be Scott, because they were afraid that Mitch's voice was too effeminate and would cause questions about his sexual orientation. They supplied the clothes for Pentatonix, and specifically chose them to make PTX look more straight. They also pushed Kirstie to wear dresses that were more revealing than she was comfortable with. If you watch the finale (I think, it may be the 13th performance, after judging was over) you'll see video of PTX visiting the Trevor Project, which was and still is a place for LGBTQ+ kids to go for support, in an attempt to prevent suicide among the kids. Pentatonix talked with the kids about being bullied, and made some ads for the Trevor Project. But you know what you *won't* see in the video that _The Sing-Off_ aired? Any mention that this was about preventing suicide among *LGBTQ+* kids. Suicide? Yes. Bullying? Yes. Gay kids? Never. And never mind that LGBTQ+ kids are a good deal more at risk for suicide; as far as _The Sing-Off_ was concerned that wasn't anything to do with them. Regarding the lead singer rule, the other groups obeyed it, and it hurt their performances. But PTX had an agenda to get Mitch's talent recognized, and that meant pushing back, which they did repeatedly. They'd choose to cover songs by female artists, where Kirstie *had* to take the lead, or one of the leads. They did their master mix in such a way that it required two leads. Once the judges began noticing Kevin and Avi PTX pushed them more to the front, culminating in their fight-duet in the 11th performance. And the judges rewarded them for it. They repeatedly praised PTX's choices of who would sing what. Because, you see, the producers apparently hadn't told the judges about the lead singer rule. So, Mitch finally gets his solo, and does Shawn Stockman say "Mitch! Are you *gay?!"* ( in the same tone of voice as Fred Savage saying "Is this a *kissing* book?" in _The Princess Bride_ )? Of course not! Shawn is a professional musician. He knows that sexual orientation has nothing to do with vocal range. More than that, he probably doesn't care about Mitch's sexual orientation. Shawn was there for two reasons only: to judge musical performances and to have fun, and he was doing both of those things. And I see a grand total of three lessons to take away from all this: 1. Be yourself, even if you have to push back *hard* to be allowed to do so. 2. Support your friends in their quests to be themselves. 3. Prejudice makes people (producers, for instance) behave stupidly. Try to avoid it.

Well he could have gotten into drug abuse or other self destructive behavior to keep going as other artists have but he didn't. Remember his sister Esther was first their required chaperone on SingOff and then their tour manager and stayed on for a couple of years after Avi left until she became pregnant with her first child. If you have never seen that notice here it is kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l7KXktN0v5m5aIU.html Avi was mature enough to leave after giving notice to the fans in May and finishing the tour in September. Tour burnout is a serious problem. Avi was smart and his touring now is a couple of months on and then 2 off. His management company now Redlight is at the forefront of protecting their artists from burnout.

@@karehelene Although the ages of Kirsten, Scott and Mitch are mentioned, it's not stated that Avi was only 22 at the time of the Sing Off. How many of us are still on the same career path as we were at 22? (I'm not even in the same marriage and I swear I intended every word of my vows!) There is no shame in admitting you're in the wrong job. He gave them plenty of notice of his intention to leave. Many artists have taken a more drastic way of changing the course they were on - Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Kobain, Chris Cornell, Avicii, Michael Hutchens, and Chester Bennington are just a few that spring to mind - and many of those were about the same age as Avi when he decided to leave Pentatonix. They are not in it for us, their fans. They owe us nothing. We owe them a debt of gratitude that they brought us the pleasure that they did - for however long they chose to do it. Luckily Avi chose to bring us a different pleasure in his solo career. And after all, if he hadn't left, where would Matt be today?

I don't know if this was putting any comments at the end of The Sing-Off. I was just wondering if you know what happened when the record deal dropped them? Did they pay them for what the record deal was worth or was it just dropped because they couldn't handle them or did they get reimbursed in anyway? I mean that would be a big deal to them now that everybody knows how they sing. Just wondering. Just love watching you and everything you have to say is just beautiful thank you for being here.
