building a storage building from ground up, step by step. using waterproof stain, using star bit screws instead of nails and why? studs on 16" on center instead of 24" #diy #shed #handymanleatherman

It’s actually a very well written and comprehensive book kzfaq.infoUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 . I wanted to pair this with an updated book on local codes to start planning a post-retirement dream shop. I think I have just about everything I need between the two. The extra plans available for purchase towards the end are priced almost as much as full home plans, not little sheds however.

Gotta say--double screwing the framing studs is probably a good idea if you're in Oklahoma. They don't call it Tornado Alley for nothing! The sturdier your building, the better chances it will have in bad weather. Keep the videos coming--I'm learning stuff here!

i really like his video and thought he did a great job but.... using screws for structure is not a very good way. Screws don't bend, they snap. The reason builders use nails is because they have a little give and won't snap

After you stood a wall up, where exactly do you screw it down to floor/foundation? Between wall studs for example or angled (toe nailed/screwed) on each side of the bottom of the wall studs?

I'm building a 12x16 shed right now with the help of ur videos. I just finished my plywood foundation and noticed its not truly square. I'm hoping I can make adjustments during the wall builds to accommodate the error. Any further advice?
@TheHandymanLeatherman3 жыл бұрын
I had too use a tape measure from corner to corner to make sure it was square. Then started decking on the corners and used the strait edges to ensure they stayed strait. Mine was a little off too but worked out.Thanks for watching

Oh yea, the pre-cut studs are 92 5/8" and with a floor plate and two (2) top plates the walls would be 97 1/8" " tall and with just one (1) top plate the walls are 95 5/8" tall. love the video bud! Love how you add in your products, names, where you bought em and why you like em. also helpful tips and things youve learned! Thanks for sharing the knowledge. Side note, main reason to use nails when construciton for building is nails can bend and move with the structure and still hold together and not break. You're lucky if you can bend a screw once without it snapping. SCrews are amazing for SOOOO many things and I"m like you, I love them wayyy more than nails. And for a thing like a storage shed I'm sure it'll be fine, especially in a mild climate. I'm by the southeast coast and need hurrican straps so going with nails due to high winds, would hate for the screws to shear and lose the whole shed!

Should have used 2X6s for your headers. Also, when you sandwich your headers you need a piece of 1/2 plywood in between to bring them to their proper dimensions. If you're going to do it you might well do it correctly.

The UBC and local building codes are a poor guide for how to build something properly. A DIY project can be built well and NEVER meet code. While your observations are correct from a legal standpoint, your "coulda, woulda, shoulda" approach smacks of condescension. Please consider simply stating what YOU would have done instead. Thanks
