I just got a trumpet and thought this would be easy, but it's tricky, like whistling. It's not just blowing air, I discovered. Music is hard.

I love Jazz music since I was like 14 years old. Last week I turned 34 and my friend gave me his old trumpet so I could learn. I play guitar so I am no stranger to music... anyway after watching a few tutorials I found your class and so far I already got the buzzing going, which I never thought I could. I'll keep watching! Thank you so much John !

Im in symphony currently. I'll tell you, for atleast 8 years, i've played my trumpet way too low. I then tried fixing it and within a month straight of practicing, my sound is better, my range is better, my quality of air is being used 100% instead of 60%. Make sure you show this to all players, veteran or not. Because sometimes, we may not be playing correctly.

VERRRY MUCH THANKS !!! That answered many questions! (especially using the wedding ring on a stick). That, in itself, answered many questions. I gave my hands a fit, in industry and had to have Carpal Tunnel surgery on BOTH hands. I lost my fingertips, as far as workability, but the hot pain up my arms is gone, but so is my guitar playing. I love to play music. My grandson decided he wanted a sax, so I got him a baritone sax. Then, he came in one day with a trombone, that he had saved his money and bought. He leaves it up here at my house and plays at it when he comes up here to visit. I figure, since it's here, I may as well learn to play it. I love 1930's & 40's Swing music, so, why not...I also bought a cheap bugle, like what they used in the Civil War...from Harbor Freight...about $25.00 if I remember correctly. I cant use my fingers well, so I figured I'd learn to play horns. I appreciate any & All the helpful info I can get. If I make it another 5 or 6 months, I'll have lived for Seven Decades! I feel every minute of it !!!

I have played trumpet 40 years now, but there has been few long breaks. Now I started again. I have always put mouthpiece in the center, little bit right because of my upper teeths and especially those four in the center, which are not in correct line. I start to to change my position more up now, this is very interesting trip to learn to play in new way and hopefully with better sound. I use 3C Bach mouthpiece now, but I also ordered one more jazz-moutpiece because it was cheap. I think it's no so deep as 3C is.
@musicprofessoronline
@musicprofessoronline Жыл бұрын
A 3C is pretty good standard to start with. "Jazz" mouthpieces usually have a more shallow cup, so watch for that. I recommend recording yourself and listening to it back so you can hear it.

hello sir my name is idan pozaylove i have a very important question about the position of the mouthpiece on the lips. im a trumpet player and my teacher told me that i need to change and put the position of the mouthpiece up even though in the past i played down (i have been trying for a year and a half do it and i do not see such good results), i see a lot of trumpeters playing up (their position) compared to individual people playing down like the legendary trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. i very want to ask you what you thinks about this what is right about this. i would really appreciate it if you can answer me thank you very much

I have one question. For years I have played the trumpet with incorrect mouthpiece placement so that my lips were not tight. I have been able to do most things a player should be able to do. I cannot manage to get a good tone out of the trumpet if I do it the correct way. Do you have any advice that would be helpful?

The main thing you can do is learn to relax. Try holding out the notes of a B flat scale for a long period of time to practice. Also you may be closing your throat. Try to open that up if you can.

If it works for you thats the best. Look around here. Lot of brillant players play off center. If you would start to learn the trumpet, then start with 50/50, 40/60 or so, but are not a beginner so stick to what works. That is my humble oppinion. Merry Christmas🌲

What if I use too much bottom lip but I can play fine. Do you think I should change it. If so, how can I change my position.
@vinniepaah5264
@vinniepaah5264 7 жыл бұрын
I wonder what would happen if he really replied (and he didn't) and advised you just exactly what you requested. Imagine you changed your MP position and suddenly everything went down hill. Meanwhile you kept convincing yourself that it was temporary and with time you'd return to your normal playing abilities. Wait... but why would you change something that worked fine for you just because someone else told you so? Think about it...

VinniePaah But,why the advise really made him get better lol.. Like, I play the flute and if I roll my head joint super in or super out, I can get super high notes without really trying(I don't have to do that, but I've done it before).. The note is perfectly in tune, but I know I shouldn't be playing the flute like that.

I wouldn't be that strict about playing on the center of the embouchure. Some of us have protruding lobe in the middle, some have teeth that cut into the lip etc etc. Playing off to the side is perfectly fine if your lip/teeth structure require it. As a proof, there are lots of fine players out there that play off to the side.

This is a classic case of a brass teacher assuming that the way he plays will suit everyone. It ignores the work of Dr Donald Reinhardt and David Wilkins among others that clearly demonstrates that multiple different mouthpiece placements are required according to the physiology of the individual.

Interesting take, Greg. It is interesting how pedagogs through the years have crafted their own substantial toolbox of materials. Certainly, one way is never definitive. We encourage students to explore additional materials and further instruction (particularly with a live instructor) so they may obtain appropriate feedback on their playing, should they be experiencing challenges. ♫

Completely irrelevant, some of the tips. People's jaw, teeth and lip are different, it doesn't really matter what the position of the mouthpiece is with the exception that the upper lip should be inside the inner rim of the mouthpiece.
