Despite the 1963 original having a solid reputation in its home country, the film was critically overlooked by international cinephiles and only came back into the spotlight following the critically acclaimed remake by legendary director Miike Takashi. And what I discovered is just how surprisingly close to the original film is.

I've watched the 2010 13 Assassins about 15-20 times. It replaced "True Romance" as my favorite movie. I think it's a triumph. Miike Takashi's movie led me to Yojimbo, led me to Sword of Doom and Harakiri... and so on. I think you go through the same thing I do, often, where I watch an 60's samurai movie once to no real effect, and then subsequent views make it better and better... until I really like it. So far, 13 Assassins 1963 has only been watched once.

Takashi Miike 13 Assassins has a special place in my heart. He also did uhhh a little more called Ichi The Killer and also First Love is pretty great as well. I love the controlled chaos Miike is able to convey.

I saw the original at TSUTAIYA (a Japanese version of Blockbuster) in Kyoto in 2002. I saw the Mikke version in a theater in Bangkok. Both are great in their own right.

There's a very hard to find movie starring Sho Kosugi from 1991 you should check out. It's gone under various titles like JOURNEY OF HONOR, KABUTO, and SHOGUN WARRIOR: KABUTO. It is set in the 17th century and stars Kosugi as Daigoro Mayeda, a faithful samurai to the son of the Shogun (played by Sho's own son Kane Kosugi). They are sent to purchase guns from Spain (this is set before the isolation of Japan from all foreign trade except the Dutch took place) and end up embroiled in the machinations of the Spanish and European courts. This was something of a magnum opus of Kosugi who wanted to get out of playing ninjas which he had done for the bulk of the 80's. He produced the move himself and co-wrote the screenplay. It's a very unique samurai movie in that it is set in Europe and is in English with an international cast. We get to see a samurai fight Spanish swordsmen so we get a mix of fighting styles on screen. The finale even sees Sho fight in traditional samurai armor against his opponent wearing European plate armor. The movie has become something of a Holy Grail for Kosugi fans do it's unavailability. DVD releases of it are on places like Amazon, but there's no Blu Ray release and it is not currently on streaming. Low res versions of it pop up on KZfaq every now and then, and i mean low res (like no higher than 360p). I recommend tracking it down so you can see Sho Kosugi as a samurai rather than a ninja and the uniqueness of setting and combat.

Original is as much greater as the Boeing 787 is greater than a plastic toy plane. Miike is good making yakuza movies with their gory and cruel content, but he fails remaking the old jidaigeki classics because those films were not about just bloodshed, they were about deeper things like duty, loyalty, friendship, justice. It was never the goal of the old masters to make a movie about a samirai killing a hundred of enemies for no purpose

@@memmori1 I liked the Miike remake but I found it weird that one of the assassins was a supernatural being (plus him r8p1ng the inn-keeper was unnecessary). Saw the original right after and preferred it for the deeper characterization and restraint

I prefer the remake but the humor can get a bit much. Hated the ending of the original. Ko Nishimura's freak out was so uncharacteristic from what the movie established. Their strategy was ridiculous as well. I much prefer Eleven Samurai with Isao Natsuyagi than 13 Assassins. Ko Nishimura was consistent in it too.

I must agree. As much as I love the jidageki genre, the older films do leave me shaking my head at times with the fugazi sword slahes and the over the top facial death expressions. SMH!!😵

P.s. When the forest ruffian that joined the assassins appears at the end of the battle, when obviously he was slain, do you believe that he was actually a deity that took human form. I believe on of the samurai first thought him to be a forest creature when he was trapped in the net. A slightly unexpected supernatural twist which would go along with classic Japanese folklore. Now I'm just rambling. This scene left me scratching my head. But I loved it. Let me know your thoughts please.

At least it's in a fight scene. You'd make over the top expressions too if you imagined yourself stab or slashed. I once stood up on an open steel swing window and got my back scraped 1 1/2 inch long and 1/8" deep by the corner of it. I made all sorts of facial expression. Hate the exaggerated expressions of character actors of the modern films. Like they're intentionally making faces while just standing there.
