Definitely agree with these, especially the travel insurance one. We splurged on a big cruise for our 20th anniversary (which we purchased about 14 months before the cruise date) and I was diagnosed with cancer between when we bought it and the cruise and we had to move it a year out as I was still going to be severely immunocompromised due to chemo treatments when we would have been going. Because we had insurance it was a hassle-free experience to get it moved to next year (so it'll be our 21st anniversary cruise). :)

Avoid the art auctions/gallery at all costs!! They convince you that the art is all original, will increase in value, and is a great investment. The truth is, the "appraised" value isn't an actual reflection of what the art is worth--usually, they are selling you a print in a fancy frame. A family member bought thousands of dollars of art, believing that it was a wise long-term investment. After she passed, we tried to find auction houses to sell the art, but most wouldn't even consider looking at the pieces because they know the reputation of the company selling them.

Yeah, Google "Park West". If you really like something that is affordable, get it. But it is not an investment. Sad to think so many pax believe there are "special" editions and original works that just happen to be on every cruise ship sailing.

I disagree with this, somewhat. I have bought a few pieces and had them appraised at home and the value has increased. I buy art for my enjoyment and not to resell. You do have to know what you are buying (water color, oil, print, who is the artist, how many of the particular item the artist has done, etc) so my take, is if you like it and can afford it, buy it.

One thing I have done, which I am glad I do, is check our bill daily. I go to the kiosk and print it out or I go to the customer service desk and ask for it. There was a time when we were charged double for the same drink. I took the mistake immediately to the customer service desk and they were able to fix it right away. If you don't keep on eye out and check it on the last day or even after you get off the ship it may be too late to fix it. Edit: I have purchased your cruise planner and it is a big help! I only printed out the pages that pertained to us (we don't have young kids, ours are all adults) I have it in a three ring binder along with clear plastic sleeves to keep myself organized for the cruise

I have another tip: if you are flying to your port of departure, buy your air tickets through the cruise company. Why? Because part of the contract is that the airline guarantees to the cruise company that you will get to the port on time or face huge fines AND have to pay the expenses of getting you to the next port. I was flying from Seattle to New York & from NY to Lisbon to board a repositioning cruise. The flight out of NY was cancelled & we were told the next flight would get us to Lisbon AFTER the ship left. Major kerfuffle with many passengers in terminal with ship luggage tags. HUGE ooops. The airline delayed a flight to Barcelona and loaded us on wherever there was an empty seat so as to get us to Lisbon. The Barcelona flight had to make an unscheduled stop in Lisbon. I’m sure it wasn’t cheap for the airline to rearrange things like that but probably cheaper than a penalty and possibly losing the cruise company’s business. HAL buys up seats in blocks so major customer of the airline.

I agree absolutely on drinks packages. Do the math! If you don’t plan to drink a lot, then just pay by the drink. It’ll prove a lot less than $60 per day.

This is what I keep leaning towards. I do have a price in mind for the different drinks packages, if they get near that I will get and enjoy, but most of what I drink regularly is included so plan is to stick with that.

@johnlavery6116 I've done well avoiding hidden charges by researching well in advance what is actually included. I'm considering spending money this time, but my family is definately not one that earns the lines a lot of money. Eating in the included restaurants, knowing when which drinks are included, knowing included activities etc and simply avoiding stuff with cost. There are no real hidden costs, there are simply those not included, and they tell you. Coffee in the buffet, free, in Starbucks branded, not. In modern world, if your key card/sea pass/medallion comes out, and you haven't purchased some sort of package/pre purchase, it's costing you money. Oh, but be aware of currency exchange rates (on board credit if not in home currency) and taxes in ports depending on country. They can sneek up on you.

Howdy Ilana, Should always fly in one day before. Insurance is a must. Travel agent told me so. Haven't gone overweight on luggage yet. Sometimes they have sales that very first night. Who doesn't do research on activities? Only someone that doesn't know what they want. Always bring enough money with you before you leave. My late wife was glad we didn't have children. Always close out your account at least the day before you leave. On occasion I leave something on my card because the cruise line donates it to charity. There is no such thing as a dumb question. Am subscribed and already hit the like button. Good information on here.

You will need to use a slot machine to avoid the fee. Royal Caribbean allows you to transfer from your room account to the slot machines without a fee. But, they expect you to play the machines, so there is a limit to the amount you can cash out without actually playing.

My husband loves the casino, I think that's the main reason he likes cruising haha. On our last cruise in January, he kept winning jackpots like crazy. Whenever he'd get a big "hand pay" we'd go down to guest services and pay off any charges to our account and he'd go back to the casino with what was left. We had a zero balance at the end, plus the casino gave us a free steakhouse dinner, free drinks, etc. Afterwards we got a bunch of casino offers that we couldn't pass up. I have four cruises booked for this next year, all in balcony rooms or suites, for just the cost of taxes/port fees and gratuities. They also include the drink package for both of us. One's a 14 day sailing to Greenland, and it's less than $800 out of our pocket. I looked up what the normal price would be and it's over $8000. So good things can come from the casino, but as I'm not the gambler, I wouldn't bet on it lol

I have a friend whose family member takes them as their plus one because they get so many free cruises due to the casinos! If it's rude to ask, I apologize, I was taught it never hurts to ask a question when you're OK with the whatever the answer may be, and as an ND, sometimes it's hard to tell what's ok My friend didn't want to ask her family member in case they thought it rude since she cruises for free with them I was always taught gambling is an entertainment, and not a way to earn money. We spent every summer in Vegas when I growing up, and they were able to accomplish the same thing with Vegas hotels and gambling, but my parents are cheap 😆 I didn't think cruises would have the same bonuses and I LOVE card games and playing slots, so I got curious about the threshhold
@elainehill6504

@@geezygee well, I would never go to a casino hoping to make money. We take what we can afford to lose, and if we don’t lose it all or break even, that counts as a win. My husband enjoys playing the slots, so he’d be doing it anyway, the casino perks are just a bonus.

Two REALLY costly mistakes and 2 tips to protect yourself: 1) Make the final payment several days in advance and then check that the credit card transaction went through. If there is a processing error (in our case, RCCL typed in the number wrong) they will just cancel your cruise WITHOUT NOTIFYING YOU. 2) Be very careful if you make cruise planner purchases after final payment. If the payment doesn't go through (or in some cases just leaving it in your cart!) they will cancel your cruise without notice. Tip: Always make a cruise planner purchase of some sort (Internet, excursion, drinks, coffee), and bill it to a credit card. That is the only way you will be notified if they inadvertently cancel your cruise. You will get an email something like "Because you have cancelled your cruise, we have cancelled your Voom 3-device and the balance will be refunded to your method of payment." and that is the ONLY way you will get notified. Tip2: If this happens to you, go online or phone and put a hold on the cabin you had so you have time to possibly rectify it before they sell it to someone else.

Ilana, you've talked about cruise insurance, let me share my experience. On September 2, 2022 I paid off my cruise for November 2022. My cruise agent strongly recommended I buy the insurance. So I did. September 5th, same month I was doing my preliminary packing in my personal item bag and, ironically, tripped over it and broke my leg. My doctor "wrote my letter" to the cruise line and they returned more than 3/4 of my money. I'm still finishing healing, but I sure was smart to listen to my agent. Turns out I had to use for living expenses but extremely grateful for the advice. I'm still planning to go. Sincerely Meredith

On our recent HAL Alaska cruise, we met two women who had used HAL's service to book their flights home after the cruise. Somehow, they were booked on flights that were too early in the morning, such that it was impossible for them to disembark, travel to the airport, and make their flights on time. They tried to work it out with HAL during the cruise, but as of the time we spoke with them (2nd to last night), HAL was not willing to waive the change fees and increased costs that HAL's service caused in the first place. I hope they were able to get rescheduled and reimbursed. So, my advice is to always check flight times against the ship's schedule, make sure there's enough room, even if your cruise line is the one making your flight arrangements for you. And also, this lends to Ilana's point to always get adequate travel insurance, as this also would have protected the women we met.

Also, monitor the flights for any airline schedule changes. I booked mine through HAL and had carefully selected my flights with a generous 5hr window at connection points. The return flight was changed altogether and I ended up with only a 2 hour window. I'm thankful in this case, I did disability service as I struggle to walk long distance. Without that, I would have missed my connecting flight in Boston. I know another passenger on my cruise had an airplane issue where she would miss her flight heading home. I hope she did work it out with HAL.

@@LifeWellCruised Usually when I'm on a cruise, I struggle with knowing if I'm getting a good deal or if they are gouging me. I mainly buy a few bottles of wine that I think are interesting. Other than that I find it overwhelming to determine what is a good purchase on a cruise. Even more so if I don't pay for an internet package to look up items and compare costs. I'm willing to pay for good quality items, but I know I'll feel remorse if I spend $100+ on jewelry or perfume and get home and find the same item for less. Are there any good tips to follow to determine if it's a worthwhile deal, especially without the internet to double check? Also, as naive as it seems, I don't fully understand Duty Free shopping.

With the jewelry, it is true that the costume pieces might go on sale. And they sometimes do go on sale in the fine jewelry shop, however, they only have one of some pieces, so if it is something you really want, think hard about getting it the first night. The flip side is that several cruise lines have gone to Effy only, and you get get most of their pieces on-line for less than the cruise line will sell it to you for.

Great tips! Definitely get the travel insurance. We sailed from Reykjavik this past June. We planned on arriving 2 days prior to the cruise and even booked a tour in Reykjavik the day before the cruise. Our flights got canceled and we arrived the morning of the embarkation. We just started the claims process. We missed out on the tour, 2 nights stay plus had to get a hotel close to the airport in case we could get an earlier flight. In all, the claim will be for over $1500.00. We were worried we still might miss the cruise. At least it would have only been a 6 hour drive to the next port. We were thinking we might have to make that drive.😮

Buy your excursions & massages, Wi-Fi etc as soon as you can after booking. 4-5 months before sailing, they start going up in price. I booked in Nov for an end of May cruise. In march or April the cost went up. Between 4 excursions, massage & wifi, I wasted about $100 by not purchasing early.

Always well-done info. #1. Please do a video about handicapped services. Does a staff person help one carry buffet plates to the table? How to get one of the (usually 3) levels of accessible rooms? Serious about this. Nightmare for friends (female very wheelchair dependent. Got onto ship and found their assigned cabin was occupied by a couple who "had paid full fair for the Privilege, they said", and neither person was handicapped in any fashion. Some hours and tears later, matter was compromised, but their original cabin would not budge, and in a somewhat less ADA cabin people were amazingly gracious to trade cabins. Very very poor event for a 50th anniversary. Some type of screening needs to take place on these ships. #2. Medical insurance should be considered: medi-vac expenses, flights back to home country; all med staffs and equipment.etc. Travel insurance needs to be read carefully for all situations.

I can’t comment on an individual situation, but typically when you book an accessible cabin you would not be bumped for anyone else. Always mark cabins no upgrade. #14. Not putting your phone in Airplane Mode after embarkation
@user-fb7wq2zy6k
@user-fb7wq2zy6k 11 ай бұрын
The "arrive in the port of embarkation a day or two before" is a good one. On my first few cruises, I arranged to arrive day of, and nearly missed my ship because the airplane had a problem with an auxiliary power unit. The auxiliary power unit problem delayed the flight, but not by enough to miss the boat. But I remember sitting there getting worried. OK, I decided that was probably a one-off. But it got me thinking a bit more about arriving early. And then it clicked!! By arriving day-of, and getting the airport to ship transfer day of arrival, I wasn't really seeing the port of embarkation. By arriving in the port of embarkation a day or more ahead of sailing, I got a chance to check out the port of embarkation! And on the day of sailing, I can have a nice breakfast and saunter down to the cruise ship terminal. Related to this, if the port of debarkation is different from the port of embarkation, giving myself a day or two in the port of debarkation can give me something similar--a chance to check out the port of debarkation too.

my biggest bug is gratuities, on NCL a family of 4 in a balcony cabin get stung to the tune of $80 per day, on a 2 week cruise thats $1,120 plus 18% on all drinks, thats daylight robbery. Some cruise line now include gratuities in the base fare so you know exactly what the "real" cost is. I will not be compelled to pay gratuities and choose cruise lines that are really fully inclusive on base costs.

Some cruise lines give a discount for completing your payment in full more than 180 days before embarkation. If you're on one of these lines, be sure to mark your calendar for about a week ahead. There is no downside to paying it off that early as the 10% savings more than makes up for the little bit of interest I might have gotten if I'd kept the money in the checking account, and travel insurance will cover any medical emergencies that might prevent cruising. Also, remembering those PIF dates are another good reason to use a travel agent--they should also remind you.

On the sales pitches, reminds me of one I sat through out of interest on a cruise I did. They were selling a product to reduce the level of acidity in your body. And as part of the presentation, the were comparing the ph of common carbonated beverages with battery acid (they are similar) and how you wouldn't drink battery acid now, would you? Anyway, the product in question was highly alkaline with a high ph, and they emphasized that this was good. And I could see the nods and hear the sounds of agreement from other members of the audience, and could see they were being sold. Anyway, I had a hunch, and when I got a chance, I looked up the ph of some common household cleaning products. The product they were selling in the seminar had a ph comparable to that of laundry bleach and liquid Draino, And most of us wouldn't drink (I hope) laundry bleach and liquid Draino any more than we would drink battery acid.
