Hey friends! I've been really into dark academia films this autumn, so I wanted to share some of my recent favorites along with some book recommendations as well.
I also want to apologize for not explaining the movies well. I always struggle with giving summaries, so thank you so much for bearing with me. I could gush over how much I love a film for hours, but give you a summary of characters and the plot? Yeah, I struggle.

I just have to tell this story. Many years ago now at my first ever job working in a used bookstore, I had a regular customer who exclusively read science fiction. He looked to be about 85, wore snake skin boots and matching cowboy hat every time he came in, and was extremely well spoken. You could tell he had read a lot of books in his life. One day out of the blue, he told me this story. As a child he would play in this park every day( name of the park escapes me. It's been maybe 15 years since I heard this). Every day, a well dressed man would walk into the park, sit on a bench for a bit to look at a statue then leave. Eventually his little boy curiosity kicked in and he made a point of walking next to the man to the bench, sat with him, told him stories and waved goodbye every day. Come to find out, the man was Tolkien. My customer told me he had a great sense of humor though seemed melancholy. Always had a smile for him and on the last day he saw him, Tolkien patted his head as he left and quietly slipped back out of his life. I really wish 16 year old me had thought to ask that customer his name. I'm sad I'll never know his story now that I'm an adult. Working in a privately owned book store was the most interesting job I've ever had. I was with them until it closed and am still friends with the old owners. I met the best and worst of mundane humanity in that shop...

@eris I have many neat memories from that job. I'm American, but my favorite customer was an Australian war bride who married an Italian solider and moved to the states. She was a nurse in the war. Her son was a professor at the local university who specialized in insect studies and in his free time staged Civil War reenactments. They were a joy to chat with. Such fun people and such interesting stories. Jobs like that allow you to meet such a wide variety of people honestly. Of course there were also some awful people, but once you knew who was who it was simpler to navigate 🤷‍♀️ Edit to say WW2 war bride! Missed an important detail

enola holmes in my opinion gives off dark academia vibes even though she doesn't dress like it all the time but the person she is reminds me of the da aesthetic.

After your description of dark academia i realised the ghibli film Whisper of the Heart is maybe dark academia as well? It has books, studying, music, antique shop and young love. Maybe not wholly dark academia but i highly recommend it!

this might sound strange but I’ve always considered Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom to have strong dark academia vibes despite having nothing to do with school maybe it’s because of how Ketterdam is described and the university district but I would definitely recommend these books

Secret history novel is about Ancient Greek studies and the students who re enact the bacchus rite. They accidentally killed a local farmer while in trance state.

Ohhh yes I’d love to do a video on it! I definitely lean more towards light academia myself. It’s basically the same as DA, but it has more positive and optimistic vibes as opposed to darker elements such as death that is present in a lot of dark academia.

I could also say: dark acedemia is for those who are freakin scared to show their innerst sensitive feelings and can't open their heart. It's just a claim, not the truth. Please, don't judge another human for another way of connectedness to sth. Let people be, who and what they want to be and let them decide how they want to create their life. Please think about it. We all have to learn to accept each other for our difference. It's easier to judge than to accept our withhumans for their being. With kindest regards 🍁🍂✨

Maybe it's not that "dark" but as an academic myself (math professor), I'd say Little Women was my favorite book/movie from this genre. I love the way Greta Gerwig really focused on the theme of women's ambition and intellectual curiosity in 19th century America in the new adaption.

For dark academia movie I would also wholeheartedly recommend Les Choristers! It's a French movie from i think 2005, takes place during the 40s and has amazing music❤

I recommend The September Society by Charles Finch. I think it qualifies as DA, it's a detective story set at Oxford in 1866

I meant to make a video all about this over the summer but I never got to it! 🙈 I already have a long list going! Sadly I think I’m going to wait until springtime to do it, since that’s when I feel all the cottagecore vibes. I highly recommend The Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter mysteries series by Susan Wittig Albert! Book 1 is The Tale of Hill Top Farm, and basically each of the books in the series goes through a different section of Bea's life in the Lake District and includes much factual biographical info while also being a highly enjoyable cottagecore cozy mystery. These books are super cozy, complete with animals that can talk to each other ❤ The movie Miss Potter is quintessential cottagecore too!

As a 30yo I was curious about the new wave of the dark academia description and then i found you channel. when i clicked to watch this video, instantly i thought about Tolkien's movie and got me similing like hihi I knew it, when you recommended it. If you haven't watched it, I'd highly recommend "The Skulls" it's a teen thriller that came out in 2000 about a secret society at an ivy league school. It's so good!

LOVED this - I am all about the Dark Academia vibes and I totally agree, although many do take place in an academic setting, it's also way more about the vibe for me! Have to agree, with ALL of your choices, but my two favourites are Frankenstein and The Secret History so I'd HIGHLY recommend getting to The Secret History, especially in the autumn/winter season!

5:49 I started my journey into DA with these and let me tell you the moment I finished The Secret History I just wanted to start again, SO GOOD. Edit : while in high school I HATED reading, you could tell me a book was 300 pages and I would think that it was LONG. So the fact that I took this book and finished it really says something

A bit off topic - but I would love to see a video made about how you store/display/organize your books! Bookshelf space is always an issue for me, so I am curious about how you do it since you get own/haul so many beautiful books!

Hahaha as of now they’re laying all over my bedroom floor 😫 My problem is that I want these really nice, fancy (and way too expansive) bookshelves. I haven’t bought some cheap temporary ones because it feels like a waste of money 😂 I’m currently building some hanging shelves but I actually don’t have a nice place to store my books 😂 Hopefully that’ll change soon! 🙈

I'd recommend Cracks, such an underrated dark academia movie but it has it all: boarding school, desires, jealousy, secret midnight meetings, and dark death :3 And Eva Green seducing your socks off trough the screen.

One of my favorite YA series (that I'm currently rereading) is Stalking Jack the Ripper, and the first 2 books check all the boxes for DA. So cool, thanks for this video! I have not ever seen School Ties, I must watch it!
