My pastor once said that a person might say, “I don’t have self love, I hate myself because I am fat”. He said, “If you really hated yourself, you would be glad you are fat!” So even our self loathing is rooted in inherent self love! We want the best for ourselves; the seeming self hatred is actually hating that I am not the smartest, most talented or best looking, because I want all the best for me!

In Galatians somewhere, Paul says not to be enslaved again” but serve others”. It’s interesting because Jesus said that it is more blessed to give than to receive...serving others is a godly way to take your mind off of yourself and it’s true that God blesses us for serving Him in this spiritual Law.

In the book, "How to Stop the Pain" the author shares how the meaning of the scripture about not judging means to not judge people's intentions behind things, which is not ours to do. We may judge right from wrong, however. I thought that was so insightful. How often do we judge people's intentions when we do not truly know their heart!

I can’t say that I always “get” every conversation between you and your guests but I always feel the peace and presence of God when viewing your videos.

the title says it all, for if we all are LIARS or at one time ever lied, then how can we rely on our idea of truth, it is corrupted and imperfect. Not truth at all, just a lie we tell ourselves we'd like to believe. Love Dr. Sean, his dad, Alisa and her dad Chuck, they go back a long way, they know a thing or two about Jesus, who is the Truth, the Way, and the Life.

Sean, at 18:20 in, you and Alisa remind me of what Rich Mullins once said so aptly about the immense grace of God - he said, "I would rather live on the verge of falling and let my security be in the all-sufficiency of the grace of God than to live in some pietistic illusion of moral excellence. Not that I don't want to be morally excellent but my faith isn't in the idea that I'm more moral than anybody else. My faith is in the idea that God and His love are greater than whatever sins any of us commit."

For folks that grew up hearing that they're never good enough never going to amount to anything, this puts them back under the law. Psalm 139 tells us who we are. When we know how much we're loved by our Papa God, we can love ourself. Then we can love our neighbors as we love ourselves.

As a counselor, I help my clients (who are believers) process the core belief "I am enough because of Christ". I feel that is essential to the gospel and healing from trauma. His grace and covering makes us 'enough' /righteous in God's eyes. It allows us to see our correct place in regards to God and need for salvation but also not be stuck in shame.

WHAT A SOLID VOICE. I LIKE THIS LADY. SEAN.

When it comes to loving others as we love ourselves, there is a point that Sean makes is that we also need to take care of ourselves enough so we can love others as God expects us to love them. Even Jesus had to get away from the crowds and spend time alone with His Father in prayer in order to regenerate. You see this multiple times in scripture. However, I agree that the focus is not on loving ourselves, especially above others, but to love others as God desires us to love them. Scripture never tells us to place ourselves above anyone else. Right before he wrote about having the mind of Christ (Phil 2:5-11) he wrote… Phil 2:3-4 - “3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” It doesn’t say don’t count yourself significant but count others as more significant. It doesn’t say don’t look out for your own interests but also to the interests of others. The key part, IMO, is in verse 3… “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility…” for that is the mind of Christ we are to have. And how I fail so mauve at that, especially in reactions to other’s actions I don’t agree with. We have plenty of other passages showing us how we are to view others and their needs in comparison to our own selves such as Romans 15:1; 1 Cor 10:24; Luke 6:31 & Matt 7:12; Rom 12:3, 16; 1 Cor 13:1-7; and many others.

I don't think we know how to love ourselves or others without Jesus. Our human love is not God's love.

My first introduction to Sean and Alisa and it was marvelous. Have listened to apologist Ravi Zacharias for years and always learned so much. Being exposed to this conversation has turned into an exceptional blessing. Will tune in for more.

😮 I didn’t realize Alisa was in ZOEgirl, I used to replay their cds all day long. Still love to revisit so many of their songs.

I think we always desire our own self interest, so we always love ourselves. Sometimes we believe lies about what is in our self interest and other times physical addiction or focusing too much on short term self interest can cause us harm, but we are never intentionally seeking what is bad for us. Even suicidal people are just believing the lie that death is the best thing for them. Inflicting pain on oneself can similarly be seen as the best path forward, either to prevent suicide, or release endorphins, or remove guilt, etc. So I certainly don't think we need to be taught to love ourselves. Rather, we need help loving God fully and knowing what is true. Self help books can be dangerous because they are often content to use sin to defeat sin, which is rather counter productive. For example, they may use pride to overcome gluttony. While practical physical advice can be good, it seems to me that the most important way to stop self destructive behavior is to find the idols and lies motivating such actions, which hinder our worship of God. So loving God with our whole heart is the most valuable first step to routing out self-destructive behavior that hinders our ability to love others.

This is great. Thank you. I have 2 thoughts on the loving ourselves part- On Alisa's comment that we really do all love ourselves, I question that. I'm aware of what Paul said on that, but wonder if he were talking about what the norm should be. I started writing this having listened just up to Andrew's q. I might not have mentioned this, otherwise, but maybe it's useful. I think of an anorexic I knew, so full of self-hatred that their desire was to utterly destroy themselves, with starvation being that particular means to self-annihilation. (The being thin idea is often just a putting into words and pictures their desire not to exist, and is a convenient smokescreen for keeping others at a distance from the source of the pain). I know others so tormented by self-hatred that they will do all they can to self-destruct and ruin themselves. (The potential for truly hurting oneself is so much wider with the growth in trans operations, which is one reason these things shouldn't be given out without real in-depth counselling at the very least). Many of us maybe have some perverse fragment within us that wants to seek our own downfall when things are going well. There was an episode of Red Dwarf in which the characters found themselves in a place in which they had whatever they wanted. But one of them has his dream fall apart. He finds himself in a hot day in a cramped, malfunctioning car with a raging wife and a hoard of squabbling, carsick, pestilential children, and his own messed up world ends up ruining the others' utopias. The point being that the thing he really wanted was to be punished and enact his self-hatred. 2. Whilst Alisa says that we can love others without loving ourselves, first, I understand, but I would say that, at the very least, failure to love ourselves makes us less effective and often defeats itself- e.g. I once worked in a kitchen with a girl who I believe didn't love herself. She continually put herself in fool situations, so that she got cut or burnt or otherwise injured, but she wasn't clumsy. She was self-care-less, you could say. It came to a head when she cleaned out the ovens with a malignant spray D9 for which you were meant to use long black gloves and masks. I remember her sitting there, green-faced, as we waited for the ambulance, having worn no safety gear and breathed the stuff in all day. She was ok, but the thing was that she was desperate to serve others but because she didn't take care of herself, she ended up making work for others, instead. The same is true with a parent or spouse who doesn't eat, sleep, etc, properly. Just watch their relationships nosedive. At the very least the practical outworking of their love is stymied. I enjoyed listening to this and it's given me food for thought. Thank you both :)

I love the spirit and truth of God in both of you, Sean and Alisa. I have never said this before but I’ve always wondered how truth that is so obvious is altered and embraced by people. The question I have is, how can something that is so clearly wrong, Or clearly right be rejected and replaced by someone else’s “truth”. Romans 1:24-28 comes to mind but is there something more to man that Blinds him and binds him from seeing and enjoying what is true, honorable and noble?

Can you two have a discussion on judgement, wrath and violence in OT? I get that God needs to punish and stop evil, or he wouldn’t be good. But punishment that doesn’t fit the crime, for example hell that lasts for an eternity I- I just can’t accept and is not the Jesus that I have experienced. Also I suffer from extreme anxiety about the salvation of my family and loved ones. I’m having trouble fully trusting a God who lets all this evil continue on earth and then is planning on continuing it in a hell through eternity. Judgement according to Jesus, meant condemnation, which only God will do. But discernment is necessary and growing to have the mind of Christ, and regarding Galatians 6:1 is discernment with the guidance of His Spirit. Why we need to tell others that they are wrong, is not necessary very often, unless we are confessing our sins to each other and then praying for one another. Pastors and elders are usually more in the position to confront. In marriage, we help each other, to know what is best according to God.

Before we judge, if we judge, we should read Matthew 18:15-17. Having been hurt in my church by a woman who should have known that verse, I realized I can only change myself, not her. As a discipline, I try not to gossip about people in my church. I haven't been able to discipline myself that way in my family but hope to start.

I think it’s important for people like you two to follow up on heaven as far as it is a temporary place until the new heavens and new earth come. I think this is why people think heaven will get boring.

You actually can…there are relative truths, and then there is absolute truth. You can have your own relative truth…however absolute truth is just that. Jesus is the Way, the Life and the Truth…that is absolute. Most non believers have no inclination to profess an absolute truth, they much prefer to navigate and maneuver within a relativistic world

Something happened to me…I suppose it was an authentic “born again” moment/process. Either way, at that point, I began to see myself as a “child of the king” and not a “dirty rotten sinner”. It was here where I had the biggest crisis of identity with what I’d become to know about myself and what I heard people preaching. I understand what you guys are talking about, but for a true “born again child of God”, the old stuff no longer reflects how I feel about myself, it’s like the preachers are trying to draw the “natural man” to the alter, but no one talks to the new “spiritual man” to nourish and guide them forward.

To the question about judge not as it applies to our current culture, that is used as a weapon these days: Don’t judge me while I judge you for being judgmental.

Thanks you for this book and video. However, as a Christian trauma therapist, I look forward to the day where there is a trauma informed approach to these conversations. That we stop looking at behavior and understand the underlying trauma impacting them.

So vulnerable narcissism is actually a kind of self hatred. There is no need to let our cultural moment warp scripture. Loving others as we love ourselves is just fine as it is written. I don't think trying to challenge culture by making stumbling blocks is the move. Christians shouldn't fear when the world has a touch point with scripture, but to use that subtlety to draw people to God. Frankly, the mentality of culture paranoia is where we get folks saying drums are sinful, dancing is dangerous, tv is evil, etc. Jesus isn't here to win your culture war, you are here to be a part of His.

You can't have your own truth, which is why truth is only what can be proven by science. If something can not be proven scientifically then it is just a theory, an opinion, a belief, a religion and not a truth. If something is "true" just to your religious group, then it is merely "your truth", and not "the truth", which isn't any better than each individual having their own "truth".

The Bible teaches us if we see our brother or sister in a fault we are to restore them in the spirit of Meekness . This can only be done in Love for one another.

In a court of law you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. That's important. You don't have the whole picture of the truth without all of those elements. When you say that there's no such thing as "my truth", you may be incorrect. Many of us were raised in extreme fundamentalist Christianity and all of what we were taught was based on someone's version of "truth". For example, people like Michael and Debi Pearl are fond of quoting Malachi 2:16 as a basis for claiming that if an abused wife divorces her husband, she is sinning because "God hates divorce." If you read the entire chapter you realize that verse 2:16 does, in fact, say that God hates divorce, but that verse has zero to do with prohibiting abused wives from divorcing their abusers. The Pearls, who are admired by many are creating their own truth. Most Christians I know, both those who are of ill intent and those who are sincerely trying to follow Jesus develop their own version of truth. If that were not the case then there would be a single Christian denomination that we all agree on. Which is true, no trinity or a trinity? Which is true, every word in the Bible is factual and literal, or some of the Bible is metaphorical or even taken from pagan sources? Which is true, arminianism or predestination? The truth that I believe is that's why Jesus boiled it down to just two things: love God above all else and love your neighbor as you love yourself. Weigh your thoughts, your truth and your deeds against these two in order to live and love like Jesus.

Loving this but a bit surprised that the loving yourself discussion you had made no mention of the new commandment. In fact I’ve heard the golden rule talked about and brought up in sermons and the new commandment never comes up. As New Covenant people shouldn’t we be loving others as Christ loved us?
