Great review. I am finally gettiing a new Mac later this month (previously on a 2015 MacBook Pro and a 2017 iMac 5k) and it is specifically because that M1 chip seems like a legitimately huge bump up. Also, your shirt is really speaking to me. Go fast, Don't die. Words from above.

It’s really impressive. I researched like crazy before making the jump and I’m not disappointed. Once all the software gets optimized I will be really curious to see what it can do.

Nice one! Congrats on the Super Bowl trip! I have the 2016 MBP the first gen with the touch bar and butterfly keys... I’ve had 2 keyboard replacements and it still sucks. Waiting for the M in 16” to drop.

My friend went through so so many keyboards so I felt blessed to have one minor issue that earned a replacement years ago. If you can wait I’d agree the next version could be crazy fast.

I work at a factory, 800 dollars on top of 1200 for the 16 GB RAM MBA is almost a month of income for me, doing a job I absolutely despise. I want to make documentaries though, so external SSD’s are in my future until I run out of 256SSD for my two projects Im working on currently...have an old Canon T2i that means overkill for the specs of the computer but idk what the future will hold...

Completely agree. It’s brutally over priced. Granted it’s extremely fast, but still even at those speeds it’s an overpriced upgrade. You definitely don’t HAVE to be on a Mac to make movies. Davinci resolve and premiere pro both run on PC just as well. I’m fully in the Mac ecosystem so here I am haha.

Brett, I currently have a 2018 MacBook Pro, not greatly equipped. Paying for it now for sure. I have it connected to two 27" monitors. Wondering if the M1 would be a big upgrade? I don't do a lot of video, a little Final Cut here and there. But a lot of PhotoMechanic, Lightroom, and Photoshop. Thanks!

Sorry for slow response. I had a 2017? 15” and feel the M1 is a bit faster. Now that apps are M1 optimized (LRc, etc) I find they are even faster. I think the overall gain of battery and snappiness it’s definitely faster. Allegedly 16” versions are coming this fall. At this point it might be worth the wait and see what that has to offer

Come on X-Rite get with it. Your workaround checking the color. Is it a time suck, obviously you've not let it be a deal-breaker. Have a good shoot this weekend

So basically I do what I normally do, shooting a gray card or color checker and then calibrate off that. Good to do anyway but hard to not be able to trust that over your eyes. Also you can use the RGB histogram and see where your whites etc line up. How you have to do it in bright environments anyway. I’m sure that’s hard to envision now that I typed it out.

@@BrettCarlsen Not at all. It's just the old fashioned way or at least the way I was taught and then got lazy? And trusted my calibration tool.

Yeah exactly. I’ve been very fastidious about calibration and shooting gray cards etc for a decade now so I use the histogram for not color related stuff 90% of the time. Back to the old school for a few weeks though hahaha

Just checking in for an update so you still believe this MacBook is good enough for photo editing client work?

Hands down! Still use it all the time. X Rite also updated their software so I was finally able to color calibrate it which was my only gripe. But yes. It’s my only laptop and I’ve covered a ton of things with it and have 0 complaints. Battery life is crazy good even when working on it.

Hahaha I was thinking the same thing. I went with a moderately loaded 13” so I could keep it if the 16” didn’t come/weren’t a big upgrade. Glad I did as I’ve had it 4 or so months now and haven’t felt bottle necked. (Went with a 1TB SSD etc, speed is the same on all of them more or less)
