These aren't all strictly 'garage-rock' riffs (which can sound a bit samey ngl), but riffs and songs that have a punk attitude to them. However, I'm sure there's a lot of great obscure Garage Rock bands from the 1960s that people can suggest to me which I didn't feature in this video. Which would you add to the list?

The first riff I ever learned was Blitzkrieg Bop. When I realised it used the exact same chord as Wild Thing, in the exact same place on the neck, just played at different speeds, my 14 year old brain got split wide open.

Music machine’s song talk talk could’ve made either this video or the last video. There’s also a riff in the song psychotic reaction by the count 5, that occurs during the instrumental break. It sounds more protopunk than just about any other protopunk song because it has a beat in half-time and the guitar riff sounds like a person literally going insane. It almost sounds like a riff from aneurysm by nirvana. There’s a lot of garage rock from the 60’s that sounds like it could’ve been recorded 10 years later in the punk era.

I wonder what the 13 punkiest riffs of the 1950s would be. Link Wray's "Rumble" or Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues" come to mind. Though of course, to speak of "punk" in the 50s is even bigger a stretch than in the 60s.

Since it is claimed to be one of the many first incarnations of metal, probably not well-suited for a punk riff list. It definitely has that energy but coming from a different place. To be fair, Revolution also sounds like a very traditional rock tune compared to the others, imo...
@SemperCallide
@SemperCallide 7 ай бұрын
I love Revolution by The Beatles but I don't think that riff is punk-y in the slightest. It's really a throwback to the early days of rock n roll (late 40s / early 50s). It's closer to traditional blues. Love the other choices on this list tho, great video

Wow, you added WILD THING. It recently struck me that it could be the heaviest progression ever recorded. It's just when it was recorded they only had so much head-room. It loses some of it's bombastic edge w/ the distortion you maintain from example to the next, but just the same; I don't think You Tube has enough head room for that gigantic, dry tone. Some great picks, and thank you for reminding me that The Sonics exist. RECOMMENDATION - Davie Allan and the Arrows.
