In this episode of Honesty Box, we hear from former Neo-Nazi, Phillip Schlaffer, who answers anonymous and confronting questions about his past.
Born in Germany, Phillip was radicalised as a teenager and spent several years in Neo-Nazi groups. Now an anti-violence coach, Phillip collaborates with German authorities to help them understand radicalisation and assist in the process of disengaging individuals from far-right groups.

Yes, I know him too. I respect his work a lot. But I have to say, he lost much of his credibility. Because after his confession to be an ex-neo-nazi, he also claimed to be an ex-member of a violent biker-gang, an ex-footballthug (in higher AND lower leagues) and ex-criminal and so on. and of course, he wrote books about everything, selling his alleged experiences in books, interviews and keynotes. I honestly doubt that he was ALL of the above. I guess he just tries to sqeeze out as much money as possible.

@@elkarelsky A lot of biker gangs in Germany are nazi-orientated. They also go on out-days to football matches to attack people, same with protests. Chances are, he was arrested more than once. Fun story about shaved heads. There was this convention I went to years ago. Back then I was fairly tall and in decent shape (sigh) and I went there cosplaying as Rude, of the Turks, in Final Fantasy VII. Shaved head, short circle beard, sunglasses, black two-pieces suit with black necktie, black dress shoes, black leather gloves and a Shin-Ra Electric Power Company ID Card with "my" name on it, adopting Rude's super-serious, slightly frowning and severe looking attitude the whole time I was there. People got out of the way, everyone was super polite, and I'm pretty sure most people who didn't know better thought I was some sort of security agent for the event or something. So that was funny, but the funniest part happened at the end, when we were trying to get back home and had an issue with one of our tires. We stopped at this garage, who were right in the middle of closing up shop at the end of their shift, and I went along with my sister (no longer wearing the outfit, but I was still this relatively tall, relatively muscular bearded fella with shaved head and sunglasses) to have a word with them and ask for their help. Turned out, they were super helpful and friendly and more than willing to fix the problem so we could get on our way even though their day was technically over and they didn't have to. This surprised me, and I told as much to my parents when we got back, I was like 'they were so nice, it's cool that there's still super helpful people like that in the world today'. My mother, ever the wise owl, remarked: "If a guy your size walked up to me with their head shaved, a circle beard and sunglasses and asked me for help, I'd have been the friendliest person ever too." XD

@@DAVHORNER This is an extremely valuable realization, for anybody to have (at some point in their life), and I'm glad you had it. It's an extremely profound moment when you realize humans are not necessarily just Evil OR just Good, rather both at different times in life. Not a "law" since there are always outliers, some people never change their evil viewpoints. But it's profound to realize that ANYBODY can change, I would argue that's a potential we all carry. I learned this while I was in drug rehab in Florida, and later halfway house, all for half a year (far away from home) It's a lesson that had absolutely nothing to do with addiction, just about humanity. It's made me so much happier in life, I swear to god. Glad you made this comment. Humans are complicated, always have been, always will be.

If anyone is wondering why a former Neo-Nazis is using the word "comrades" to refer to other Neo-Nazis even though the word in English is more commonly used when talking about the left wing: The German word "Kameraden" translates directly to "comrades" and is used by soldiers to refer to one another. Thus Neo-Nazis use it as they think of one another as soldiers fighting together. The word used by people on the left to refer to one another is "Genosse" (which also translates to comrades). If Olaf Scholz, our current chancellor, is speaking to the public he will begin with "Dear citizens" (="Liebe Bürgerinnen und Bürger"), but when speaking to his party, so fellow politically left people, he will begin with "Dear comrades" (="Liebe Genossinnen und Genossen").

He has hundreds of KZfaq videos on his own channel where he tells his whole story. He definitely was into fights. Not just that, he was an extremely violent person. He started with being a hooligan. He got stabbed multiple times, shot at people and fought hundreds of times during his "career". After he was a nazi he became a criminal for a few more years, leading a 1% biker club, drugs, pimping and many many other things. From what he is saying and how he is saying it, I have the feeling he is done with any kind of violence for the rest of his life. I wouldn't mess with him, because he most likely knows how to defend himself in a fight, but I personally am very sure that he won't ever start a fight again by himself.

@@MAZEMIND The problem is - there are no "teams". And there is no western diversity. The only true diversity is the diversity of life. Big cities filled with people of different races and opinions because they attract the very best and small towns with unchanging populations full of unity and tradition. They are both equally important, one providing innovation, the other stability. It's supposed to be a symbiotic relationship, instead quite recently it turned into an autoimmune disease. We are bleeding out from self inflicted wounds. The problem with all of the "teams" is that it was never a competition.

To the Navajo it represented abundance and luck. It also appears in stone age rock carvings of cultures that vanished thousands of years before civilization began. Unfortunately it now has only one meaning in Western civilizations.

It's just extreme cognitive laziness coupled with psychopathic traits (inability to experience empathy and no sense of right and wrong). Instead of treating people as individuals and learning their traits, they just say fuck it they're all X Y Z. And some people have what I call the 'sports mentality' where nuance and intellectual curiosity may as well be hieroglyphs as far as they're concerned; they pick a 'team' and anyone not on their team is 'bad'. They'll do the same thing with politics in general because it's easier than actually thinking about details. In-groups and out-groups. Most people are taught when they are children that its an infantile and counter-productive mindset, but unfortunately, mentally challenged cunts will try to raise their kids to be just like them. Everyone makes generalisations, but intelligent people will simultaneously recognise that generalisations are cognitive shortcuts of limited validity by their very nature.
@snkybrki
@snkybrki 8 ай бұрын
To my knowledge, racism stems from negative (or perceived negative) experiences, applied to a general populus. The brain likes shortcuts. Loves them, even. It also generally remembers and focuses on negative events much more than positive ones. Combine the two, and you get shortcuts based off of largely negative events. And these shortcuts, if left unchecked, lead into different treatment of others based on things wholly unrelated people have done.

I do think that you should read the materials and texts that radical groups are engaging in IF you are trying to critically engage and persuade people away from these very damaging beliefs. When we aren't aware of what the other side is actually arguing with, then we end up just talking past each other and not doing a service to the side we are arguing for. That's one reason why former extremists are so good at convincing current extremists to get out of that mindset. An outsider coming with just social justice literature and not understanding the scope of the beliefs a certain extremist group has isn't going to be effective.

Easily. Ignorance leads to fear, which in turn leads to hatred. Which in turn leads to violence. Which in turn leads to retaliation. Which in turn leads to the first group thinking they got proved right. Which in turn leads to retaliation over the other side's retaliation, and so on until somebody 'wins', everybody (who's left and not kept from doing so from the 'winning' side) goes their separate ways to lick their wounds and bury their dead, and then half a century later we wonder about 'why and how'. Until the next time a group of people doesn't take the time to meet or know another group. We're a happy species to be a part of.
