Watching this one was AWESOME!!!! 14 - don't spread any bad vibes because you have a tough day 15 - when you come up with a cold, call it "allergy" and stay clear from others 16 - ask if it's okay to use a shower in one of the dressingrooms 17 - make sure to also let the tourmanager know what's missing in the tour bus fridge instead of just eating it empty 18 - respect the headliner's soundcheck time 19 - close the doors on the bus if someone is taking a nap before the show 20 - clean up your mess before you go to sleep on the bus

A good tip for gigging bands: have a small digital clock on your pedal board to help you keep track of set times. Ideally you should rehearse your set before hand so you know how long you take but in the event you want to change something up a bit, a digital clock at your feet can be a lifesaver for making sure you don’t run over without having to look at your watch or pull out your phone, both of which look quite unprofessional on stage in my opinion.

About the food. ANY food seen anywhere near any tech crew or operatition stations (monitor desk, FOH etc) most definately belongs to the crew. DO NOT EAT IT. EVER. NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE. We get in trouble for telling you not to eat it but we also cant get away from our desks to replace it. It's also highly lickely that we need to derig after the show, you may be eating the valuable calories needed by someone for a very physical task 18 hours into a long shift,

Bring your own toilet rolls, really, my bandmates and I cried tears of joy when we found the first venue with toilet paper ten days into the tour. Also, if your stomach is any less powerful and resilient than a concrete mixer, bring a suitcase of canned meals and don't touch anything local, especially if your tour involves other countries.

Don't be Eric "Church was a young newcomer to country music in 2006. He had just released his debut album, Sinners Like Me, when he landed the opening slot on Rascal Flatts' massive Me and My Gang headlining tour, but instead of celebrating the opportunity, Church chafed at the restrictions the tour placed on him in terms of stage space, length of set lists and more. He admits he deliberately pushed the limits again and again, walking onto the parts of the stage he was not supposed to use, playing too loud and repeatedly playing past his allotted stage time. "That cost Rascal Flatts a great deal of money, since their crew went on the clock at their set start time whether Church had left the stage or not, and after repeated warnings, they fired him from the tour. As Church tells the story, he was blacklisted from every major tour in country music for years thereafter, and he and his band were forced to build their touring career through a series of club performances. But Church did not stop there; he continued to harass Rascal Flatts for the remainder of their tour by staging a series of free shows in the cities they played, calling it the Me and Myself Tour."

3:26 the awkward moment when most of the venues I've ever had a hand in playibg at didn't even have a stoage room, and if they did, it was nowhere near enough spaces for simple equipment like our guitars. The first show i played was a battle of the bands in toronto for fun (obviously we didn't win), all of the bands were told "just" leave our instruments in a tiny bathroom that the public had full access to. Essentially what im telling you is that if you have to play at a place called Revival in toronto, and there are at least 3 other bands on the bill, have fun fighting the other bands so you dont have to leave your guitar underneath the urinal... The accomodations there were SHIT, we felt like our gear would get stolen if we didn't, so we hung out in the tiny washroom/"storage" room until our set started lol. How often do you see a band come waltzing out of the washroom onto stage like they were taking a shit together......

Related to #5 - there are no time outs during your set, not for string breaks, pedal failures or drum kits falling over. Have a contingency plan, so you know what song(s) you can drop (or play at like 150% speed) so you finish on time.
@squidcaps4308
@squidcaps4308 5 жыл бұрын
Agree on all of these points. that 15 minutes early is not a suggestion, be there, at the same time on each gig. Timing is not a joke and you don't have ANY margins. The headliner can be late, you can't. Touring is one long groundhog day for a reason, you do same thing, each day, in the same order and in the schedule. This alleviates stress for the WHOLE crew, from catering to tour manager. Oh, and invest in your emergency bag contents... This means all the meds, legal or not that you need to stay alive. Do NOT dig into other persons bag, you have no idea what is there and often, you don't want to find out. The bag is Holy. The bag should have bandages, headache and nausea pills, q-tips, sleeping pills, antacids and both diarrhea AND constipation meds (for first timer, your body does not know when or if you should do #2 plus the "no solids" rule... it takes few days to learn the new routine so be prepared for it, try to eat all the fiber you can get, while touring your diet will be on the heavy side, carbs and fat, fibres are often missing, they are the balancer for your guts and your gut dictates a lot about your mood and energy levels, try to eat at the same time each day, that helps a HUGE lot keeping your digestion running at nice rhythm).. All the things that are about your health should go in the Bag. Except actual illegal drugs (i don't count all prescription meds in this category, one or two vicodins might be wise but not a gram of heroin....). The police and border control knows about our bags so... don't be stupid, that is literally the first thing they look if it come to that. AFAIK, for guys in US, Canadian border control checks every tour bus... so don't be stupid, that is nice way to fuck it all up before it even got started. I repeat: you will have opportunities later to do that shit, this is not the time and the place for it. and about drugs.. just don't and at least, do not experiment on the road. People are dependent on you and you just can't take a 48h trip. There is time for that, it is not your last chance. Nancy Reagan has it right for once, just say no to strangers offering you unknown substances.

@ceecrb1
@ceecrb1 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheFearedTurtle If you dont talk to the lighting operator before hand, you get what he creates. Dont get upset if the lighting guy's artistic view is not yours, that does not mean he's bad at his job. If a band sends a set list with lighting cues, it's not uncommon for the lighting guy (the last person in the chain) not to receive it. (this happened to me with a world famous dj, manager just ran up to me screaming instead of asking first). If you say you dont move around a lot, then go all over the stage, expect to spend a lot of time in a shaddow. Tell them if you stay still or move, then do as you said. If you need to be in a position for a light, be exactly on it. Not near it. On it. We lighting guys get the blame when you are standing half lit and half in dark, even though the light is exactly where we programmed the position to be, in the rehersal. Dont expect instant fixes for issues. We have to balance finding and fixing an issue with continuing a show. EG. Something simple, the smoke machine may run out of fliud, we may be alone and need to refill the machine, while doing that we cant run lights. We do the best we can as things happen. Dont tell him what you need or want as you are going on stage, if he/she hasnt been given time before doors open to program it, you aint got it. (This is really common). If you have a manager or friend who can be near the lighting guy to guide them through the set (eg song finnishing in 3,2,1), the lighting guy can busk but at least have an idea of whats coming up. Video equipment and how it works and is programmed varies HUGELY. Take multiple copies of all content in different codecs etc. It's not the operators fault if last night you were in a venue that has X system and now you are in another with Y system and it works diferently. Give them all contents well before doors open. Some media servers need to ingress (re-render) contents into their own format for it to work or the video guy may need to convert it to a format specific for his system, when done live can cause stutters and slowdowns for the playbacks, basically you being late makes other band's videos look crap. If you want to playback a video perfectly syncronised to a song (eg a video that has lyrics in it) either pre-prepare some sort of syncronise system and test it before doors open, or accept that it may not go perfectly well.

At this point, it’s hard for trap not to sound generic with how overplayed it is. It doesn’t help that the distinguishing feature is using the same shallow, tinny high-hat and snare sounds. Maybe you can do interesting stuff outside of it, but creativity is an uphill battle when you’ve decided to jump on the biggest trend in popular music recently.

Great notes and these are what we adhered to while touring. Always confirm load in times and arrive early, also nothing more irritating to the following band or headliner than bands that go over their sets. Also we didn’t allow any after show groupies on board the bus for “reasons”, nobody likes to be accused of something you didn’t do, and one way to avoid that is to not allow it on the bus. Other than make friends with the monitor and sound guy, treat everyone with respect and do your job. Load in and offstage quickly. We also didn’t shit or even piss on the bus and did all of our business at the gas station, lastly I highly recommend good Hygiene, nobody wants to smell your BO on tour, so make sure to hit the occasional truck stop and rent a shower, they’re pretty clean and it’ll keep your attitude in the positive after weeks of eating shitty convenience store foods etc. don’t think Walmart will let you crash for the night in their parking lots anymore but a KOA works and again, truckstops.

A friend of mine had a rule about arrival times for shows his band played. " Arrive on time, you're really late. Arrive 15 min. before the show, you're late. Arrive 30 min. before the show, you're on time. Arrive 45 min. before the show, you're early." He was always one to arrive 30-45 min. before showtime because of the possibility of something going wrong(lost/forgotten/malfunctioning cables,gear fucking up,etc.). He would check and recheck his gear the night before and the day of a show,but there's always that chance that something goes wrong and being there 45 min. before a show gave you time to fix unexpected problems.

Then I just roll it into place set my last few cables, and pedal board up. (pedal board is a single cable) once the sets over. Insturment in case, cables quickly wrapped up, and rig rolled out. 2-3 minutes tops.

A show ending at the right time can be super important. Punk and metal has been banned from a venue nearby where I am because they went on too late, bothering anyone who lived close enough to hear it. All I remember of the houses near that venue was a single house across the street though. I don't remember if any of the bands who played there were popular at all, but I doubt any were at the time since it was literally a hall with another building for bathrooms and storage. It still shows how important it can be to stay on the time schedule. If a band plays for longer than they're supposed to, the head band can have less time to play.

This was some very good advice. I'd add, "Don't overpack for a tour." Bring what you need and no more... learn to live with less. Remember... you need to carry all those bags with you, and you also need to rummage through them to find anything. On every tour I've done, up to and including 6 months at a stretch, I've made do with one large-ish bag, a soft equivalent, roughly, to a medium sized suitcase.

I think knowing when to look out for each other can be a good rule too. Yes, we're all adults, and we should be responsible for ourselves and not have to be babysit. But some level of discernment to help your fellow band member(s) on bad days can go a long way. Best example I've seen here is when there is food available. If it looks like someone in the band or crew isn't going to be around before the food runs out, SAVE A PLATE. I say this from experience. While also being the bassist, the small band I was in required me to be the de facto production manager, because no one else knew what they were doing in that regard. Many times the band would go eat while I ironed-out all last-second details before the show, except then most (if not, all) of the food would be gone. The last time this happened was on a particular shitty day, which included an episode where we were super late because our trailer axle collapsed and shredded a tire in a pouring rainstorm. After that and yet again missing another meal before the show, I decided I was going to quit touring with them soon thereafter. It's those days, where there is only so much you can do to fight what the world is throwing at you on the road. Not one person gave a shit about the stress I was going through, so I forced to get out of that unhealthy life.

Back in the mid to late nineties I was the keyboard player for a band from Sweden called Killer Bee. We did some cool tours in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Sometimes we were the headline act and sometimes we we the opener. When we headlined we went out of our way to treat the opening bands with as much respect as we could . One Band called Carcassinova, we lent them our PA and soundman. I even sat in with them. On the other hand, we opened for a famous guy in Zurich at the Folkshaus and his crew were just assholes. We had our own soundman but their monitor man just tried to fuck us up any way he could. Didn't happen though. We were great and kick ass!

Oh yeah, the headliner thing also goes for festivals in a way. I played a festival two years ago and we filmed the gig, and the stage manager indicated we had one song left, so the other guitar player walked up to me and said: "Fuck it, we're doing both songs". I quickly replied that we had only one more song, so we should skip one song and go straight ot the set closer (obviously, methinks). As he's walking back to his spot on the stage, he audibly yells out: "Quit whining!!" When we watched the recording of the gig the day after, you could hear him yell loud and clear over the audience. He started the set closer nonetheless (lucky for the band, and lucky for him as well, if you catch my drift). Needless to say I straightened him out after the gig, but he was having none of it. Thankfully, when we watched the recording of the gig the day after, he knew he was out of line and apologised.

Man, I wish I would've seen this sooner! I went on my first tour last year with my old punk band. We did everything ourselves, except for booking the actual gigs, which taught me an important lesson. If you're gonna hire someone working remotely to book your gigs, make sure you communicate with the venues in advance too. And make sure it's a reputable person. Our singer paid 100 bucks per gig for this guy to book us shows around the country. We got the gigs, but as a result of lack of communication and differing stories between booking guy and the venues, we didn't get paid at about half the shows. Looking back, I think the booking guy was ripping us off, but I still learned a hell of a lot on that tour.

Great advice not just for touring but for being in a band of any kind" be respectful to your bandsmates and the other bands". Consideration is lacking in general. I also feel the same about backpack nation. On the floor not the seat next to you.

Also before I forget, make sure you have a pretty sizable amount of merch for tour, sometimes it’s those t shirt and cd sales that put the gas in the tank and food in the stomach, even the best planned tours don’t always get funded the way they were expected, if you come home broke but not in the hole you did ok.

Talk to anyone who's ever been in the Navy about clogged toilets. Unlike a bus, you can't get away from it on a ship by just pulling over at a truck stop, and the cleanup method is something they never show anyone in war movies. It's just too gruesome.

Be a half hour early, or at least plan to be. Shit happens, planning 15 minutes ahead is just a formula for being late. Show up a half hour or hour to prepare deal with any problems that might happen. Broken strings, busted peddles, bad chords, lost power supply. It might be 15 minutes if not more time to run to a gas station for batteries for that must have distortion or wah peddle, etc. Be as early as possible. I make sure to have a spare everything I can afford spare of.

One thing kind of relating to #6 I’ve noticed is to give people clearing their gear away on stage the space to do so (not defending moving gear slowly, it should only take a few mins). I’ve played shows where the second we finish our set the next guitarist is so eager to play they jump on stage and stand there like a melon, getting in the way and adding unnecessary pressure, which could make you forget to pack certain stuff. If you’re going to do that, at least offer to help move amps etc rather than just standing there.

Unrelated to this video but I feel like someone here might have a quick and easy answer to my issue. I am using Reaper to make demo tracks and have some recorded guitar in 2 tracks and then the free MT Power Drum Kit to program MIDI drums. The issue that I'm having is that right before the drums fully kick in with more than just the bass drum the volume of everything in the project drops significantly. If I mute the drums then the guitars stay as recorded but as soon as I unmute the drums it drops back down again. It starts at a seemingly random point right near the beginning of the track but is always in the same spot and I can't for the life of me figure it out. Thanks in advance to anyone who sees this and replies and or Glenn if he actually sees it.

Extra socks. Extra underwear. Wetnaps. And do not live on cheeseburgers. And if you are a cigarette smoker buy rolling tobacco prior when in states that have expensive cigarettes. $10 for a pack of smokes could be better used for fuel in the van. And there will be times that you will be hungry, tired, broke and sick of your bandmates. Remember you signed up for this adventure so be grateful you get the privilege to be on this adventure. I did a big U.S. tour in 2005 and loved it. And have not done a big one since that. Be thankful.

This is kind of a stretch As much as it is insightful, I don’t think it’s quite useful Considering most people watching might just be starting out or have some experience with this, it might be better to make a list for the DIY tour 1. Everyone is working. On the ride to the show or at the show. Someone has to work merch at all times, someone has to watch gear, and everyone everyone is networking (actually networking and not trying to bang a chick at every stop) 2. Bring baby wipes. More than likely money will be tight and you won’t be able to afford a hotel room every night so showers are scarce. No one likes someone who stinks. 3. Buy some type of inflatable bed. If you do get a room, or local band decided to house you, this will save your back from the cruel floor. 4. Stock up on water and snacks before tour starts. Again money is tight and you don’t want to be spending more than you need to 5. Always be courteous to the other bands, the venues, and promoters and be sure to thank them all. More than likely this is your first time in the area and these people will remember you. Besides having fun playing, you need to remember this is still a business. Being professional will go along way. 6. Have your merch organized. This helps you when fumbling in the dark while another band plays and helps get to the next fan quicker. A flash light wouldn’t hurt either 7. Don’t take any unnecessary gear! Gear gets heavy and can put extra stress on your vehicle. Not only that, but rushing from one city to the next could make you forget something and leave it behind. Obviously you need spare cables, batteries, strings, etc., but you don’t need your entire collection of pedals 8. Have some knowledge about your tour vehicle (or least have someone who does). Again money is tight and there’s a possibility of breaking down. You need to get to the next show in less than 10 hours and the mechanic in the nearest town won’t get to you until Monday. Try to have spare parts like water/coolant, oil, belts, and a spare tire. Might want some tools to go with it Definitely not everything, but it’s a start

Can confirm a lot of these. I worked a Cannibal Corpse show and their engineer told one of the bands he will shut down the sound system if the opening band goes over their time. Their schedule is followed to the letter. Finishing early is good but late is not a good thing at all and won't be tolerated.

Glen the next time you do Merciless Metal Mix Reviews you should have "Glen's Pick" where you go over a song from the past for good or bad reasons. Like what's great about Piece Of Mind or bad about Turbo (pick a song off each). Also when the song is over you should give a quick summery of what's good and bad. It's hard to get everything you are saying when it's playing.

True story.. Our band manager told us not to eat that night that he was making a HUGE meal for us to share with the headlining band that night which happened to be Devildriver. He had set the whole thing up with their tour manager and it was cool and good to go. Well long story short their tour manager is a tool. As we were setting up he was telling us no need to do a soundcheck because he wanted to talk to the manager of the place right there instead of the office. SO as were were playing that fuckstick loaded up all the food and took it on their bus so they could eat and left us broke and hungry. Our bass player is a diabetic and damn near had an episode because of him. Still had a great show and Jeff Kendrick moshed to our set and congratulated us on a kickass set.

If you absolutely have to shit, bring plastic bags - multiple, so you can wrap one in several more and then tape the whole thing up like a biohazard container. Then chuck it in the first dumpster you have access to, the garbagemen will have doubtlessly seen worse. I have a history of clogging toilets, so I know full well that I couldn't risk using a bus toilet, gotta go whenever there's a public option.
