In this video we have a look at a FTDX 560 I picked up this week end for a good price.
Can we get this old rig back up and running? Stay tuned and lets see what we find.

I have this exact radio, minus the original Yaesu speaker. I bought it off eBay about 10 years ago, and completely rebuilt it. It is near mint. I'd say better than 9.5 out of 10. It works beautifully. I use a D-104 Silver Eagle microphone with it. So far I have been unable to find a nice matching Yaesu speaker.

Noticed the broken red wire as you poked around it the first time, nice that it was such an easy fix! Looks like the caps should be pretty easy to get to, so many rigs require "neurosurgery" to get to components you have to wonder sometimes how in the world did they build them to begin with! Look forward to your next installment. 73 - Dino KL0S

Good catch Dino. I did not see it at the beginning. I agree it is amazing how long old components last in these..... Thanks for stopping in Dino

It looked like they hit that red wire with a soldering iron on the shielding. I knew I seen it move when you were showing us around. Nice work bud. What a nice radio. At least she's in good hands now...

Thanks. Well time to get your hands in one. I tell you, once you work on tubes you will hate solid state. A good old tube rig to learn on is something like the Siltronics 1011C or the old Gemtronics 5000. Fun fun.

Another enjoyable video of a great bench tech doing his magic. It always looks so easy when you do it. But that's because you know where to look for the problems. I did a bunch of bench work on video gear at a tv station, and had a very handy ESR meter for checking electrolytics in circuit. That saved me a bunch of time and fixed many tv's, video tape machines, and audio gear. Cameras too.

Thanks for the kind words Ron. It is all at what you are used to working on. I bet you were a master at that gear you worked on as a tech. Not sure how many rigs I have repaired by just looking at it.

I haven't seen one of those in many years Buddy. Looks like you got a nice clean unmolested one there. As I remember, those rigs had a pretty good receiver in them. I think they sold around the $4 to $500 mark. Back in the early 70's that was a good chunk of change. Yes, take care of the 6KD6's cause they ain't making no more of them. 73 Doug.

I am watching this video closely because I have a FTDX-401 here and it looks exactly the same. It receives ok but transmits audio only on 3 bands and just a carrier on the other 2 bands. I think 40 and 20 meters have only a carrier when I transmit like I am in CW mode on USB or LSB. It will output about 200 watts. Love to bring this radio back to original condition. Thanks again Buddy for a another great video. Lyle VE5EE

Hello, I was gifted one of these radios about 2 weeks ago. It had most of the original Toshiba tubes in it. On a cursory look over, it doesn't look like anyone has used a golden screwdriver on it. I'm looking for a schematic and users manual for it. Would you happen to have a copy? Thank you.

What is the purpose of the metal shield around the tubes?
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 6 жыл бұрын
Basically for keeping signals from entering/exiting the tubes. Strong RF signals could be introduced and amplified in the tube causing distortion and mixing of unwanted signals. Hope that helps.

@@TheRadioShop I'm glad you've still got this radio. I've had one sitting around here, unused, for decades now. It put out a powerful signal when it was working -- sort of like having an amplifier. I recall it put out an awful lot of heat -- enough to burn my hand if I held it on the case. I had to put a 120-volt computer fan on the top of the case to cool those finals until I found a proper Yaesu fan to mount on the back. I couldn't use headphones with it because of the loud pop it made when going in and out of transmit. I stopped using it when the T/R relay stopped reliably engaging and the IC current would peg the needle for a second. I didn't want to risk damaging those final tubes. It's sat here on my bottom shelf ever since. Sometimes I think I can hear it whispering to me, "Hey, come and fix me." 8^) -- John
