In this video I am pulling apart a replacement 130W AC laptop power adapter. This adapter was reviewed in a previous video but today we will investigate whether or not it deserves a safety listing. It is an interesting one.

Really interesting! I have a OEM Dell 130w usb c adapter and was considering purchasing a 2nd third party one. Would love to see a similar tear down of the official one in comparison to this. Love the videos!

Ouch. This was about as bad as I was expecting. between that wrapped metal sheet and the transformer windings, there are multiple places which are only a bit of nicked insulation away from going live, and if things are being put on backwards inside the factory, that doesn't inspire confidence. Good to get awareness out about this kind of thing.
@AllThingsOnePlace

Yeah, scary right? I bet there's a lot of these out there too. The metal shields are required to help block radio interference and an engineer took the time to design it with a cutout for safety. Oh well.

Thank you very much for this, it was very informative. A few weeks ago I had a power surge (The underground utility cable shorted out very spectacular!) and my Dell 130W charger started acting strangely, it would start charging and then stop. I unplugged for a minute plug it back in and it worked. Hmm… I wondered if they moved the charger control circuits to the charger. I saw your video a couple of weeks ago and ordered a new charger and it has been a week since I had the new charger arrived and the Dell XPS is back working like a champ. Now I’m going to teardown the old one and see if there is any damage to it. I have surge protectors on all the electronics in the house including the washing machine but not on the laptop because I move around to different outlets. The surge set off the smoke detectors and fried all 7 of them which are being replaced.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 4 ай бұрын
Yeah, that's certainly odd behavior and a power surge is a difficult event to deal with. Shorting mains power cable is a scary event. The best case is it just doesn't turn on anymore, safely fails and doesn't damage anything down stream. I've had a few things damaged over the years from power issues. The fire alarms I am pretty surprised by, the power supplies in those I would expect to be able to take a lightning strike and not fail, they are built down to a price I guess. A lot still use capacitive droppers and zener regulators. So, a short transient can walk through that capacitor like it's not there, and says zap to the computer in the alarm.
@theoneohmresistor
@theoneohmresistor Жыл бұрын
it is probably a C5 (cloverleaf) connector instead of the C7 (8 figure) so that if you already have dell charger, you could just swap out the mains cable, instead of thinking about it being obviously fake by being wrong connector. I am happy to see that someone else gives a thought about PFC, because I personally wouldn't use this adapter if it was the last one in the world (beside bad QC) I really like this video, and it would be fantastic if you also made a teardown of the original dell charger and making a comparison!

Hey! Do you have a recommendation for a third party replacement for the 130W Dell power adapter? Would appreciate the most budget option you'd recommend. Thanks for the great vids!
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
Yeah, in this case the Dell OEM is almost the same price and a lot better than the replacements on may factors. I'd really just get the Dell. You can get used ones usually pretty cheap from resellers too. There may be some good replacements but mostly they look like this one, and this one is bad.

I would like to see a test of a Lenovo Thinkpad 65w adapter. Also, could you please elaborate on the advantages of a ground pin in a usb-c adapter? Of course, most of them are for laptops but even some laptop manufacturers provide a 2 pin, ungrounded charger.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, I need to get into some Lenovo stuff. I have a few chargers around here somewhere. I made an adapter to connect to the rectangular plug end. The ground pin is used for a few reasons, here are some: One is safety of the adapter, another radio interference reduction or shielding, then also it has the effect of reducing leakage to the user from power supply by shunting the residual AC to ground. Of course if it isn't even wired like this one then it doesn't work for any reason.
@10mbc
@10mbc 7 ай бұрын
@@AllThingsOnePlace Thanks for making that clear! I was talking about the recent Lenovo chargers, not the old ones. They are all USB-C now. Maybe some docks still use the rectangular but that was not my intention.

I am looking for slimq 240w power brick but only issue is huge shipping costs plus import duty and from the slimq customer complaints about hissing and causing DCIN connector failures in Dell and asus models. Then there's no way to check the revision to see if there are affected models. Teardown was pretty brutal but explained in a very easy manner. Thanks

Could you review the Ugreen 145W 90Wh (25,000mAh) powerbank? It has 2 USB-C ports (100W and 45W) and a USB-A port (18W) The two USB-C ports do 100+45W together, and all three ports do 100W (C1) + 15W (C2 + A) together. Both port C1 and C2 can do charging and discharging, but port C2 is capped at 45W for both directions, doesn’t make a lot of sense. Port C1 is also capped at 65W for recharging. The Powerbank lacks any Extended Power Range modes, but it likely supports PPS as it claims compatibility with the S23 Ultra. The product images indicate it has the UK/CA and the CE marks, and the powerbank has an LED display for battery percentage. The Price is the same as the Anker 737 ($150), but it appears to be unavailable on Amazon US at the moment
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
Yeah, there is a limit on capacity and power delivered. This pack limits charging speed, likely to prevent overheating. At 145W out, I would expect overheating for a battery of that size. The Anker overheats as well but it manages to drain itself flat before doing so which I consider fine, it did its job now it needs a break. Anyway, I added the UGREEN to the list. No idea when or if it will make it. These high wattage claims on smaller batteries are something to be wary of.

@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
That laptop does want the higher wattage of the Dell 130W adapter, or 6.5A on one cable. It is proprietary, so really stuck with the Dell official charger. I wouldn't get the one from this video, ha. The Baseus should charge it fine, but it may run out of power if you want to do heavy workloads while also charging.

@@AllThingsOnePlace I have started watching your videos because I want to make an informed decision on a power bank. In one of your videos you said that the best way to decide on a powerbank is to think on what requirements you have, wattage, amperage. My requirements are a dell laptop which uses this 130W 6.5A powerbrick and 45w fast charging for samsung. Would the anker 737 or the 250w anker be a good choice? Or do you recommend something else? Thanks in advance!
