In this video I change out the old knives on the WoodMaxx MX-8800 PTO Chipper for a fresh set, I also drill a weep hole in the bottom of the flywheel housing in order to let rain water drain out.

Useful video. Thanks. I have the same chipper for several years now. Very handy machine. I would say that my inclination is to use new bolts and keep the old ones for a rainy day 😊

Nice video as always ! I own the same chipper and will be drilling the hole also. I have 46 hours on mine so a knife blade change is coming up. i also purchased the bed knife at the same time just in case. I would suggest cleaning off the flywheel with a flat file where the blade seats on the flywheel just to be sure. Love the video's.

Good demonstration on changing the blades 👍 You can buy a simple little tool too touch up your blades right on the chipper also . It’s a special honing block for Doing planer blades for wood workers . Has two different edges on it for the edge of the blade . You rub it back and forth with one hand and a little oil . Will bring your blades back razor sharp if no serious damage . When changing blades the clearance between the anvil is important for how much of a bit it will take also . Getting blades sharpened need too be done by a person that knows the proper way also . Angle of cut and tolerances . All the blades need too be exactly the same width matching perfect and same distance from cutting edge too center of mounting hole both sides .I’m getting my chipper out soon and I will send you a picture of the honing tool . Big big time saver 👍

I’ve seen the sharpeners! We use them at work, we call them the “knife keeper” it’s white and blue! I can send my knives to WoodMaxx for $15 and they will sharpen both sides of each knife back to proper specs!

I think the hole will work well! Might need to go slightly larger so it won’t get plugged up, time will tell…

You'll have less chance of rounding off the nut if you use the box end.
@WoodysRTBFirewood
@WoodysRTBFirewood 3 жыл бұрын
Always better to use the box end of the wrench whenever possible. The open end will easily round off your nuts. And due to the fact that the fly wheel is a little bit rusty where the plates mount I would apply a light layer of fluid film or even motor oil between the knife and the fly wheel just to prevent rust and the ease of removal next time for sharpening. And drilling that drain hole is an easy fix, however you should always wear safety glasses when drilling, especially overhead.
@DudeRanchDIY

Fluid film is a good idea! I’ll have to do that next time!

Can those old knives be sharpened and reused or is it easier/cheaper to buy a new set?
@stephendevore1800
@stephendevore1800 3 жыл бұрын
Yes ! When you purchase your new blades they come with a diagram to show you the angle they want them sharpened at or you can send them back to Wood Max and have them sharpened for you. Great company to deal with by the way.

Why did you go MX-8800 vs MX-9900? The small increase in-feed shoot not worth the additional cost?
@DudeRanchDIY
@DudeRanchDIY 3 жыл бұрын
The biggest reason was because when I initially put in my order the lead time on the 8800 was about 6 weeks and the 9900 was about 14 weeks just due to the timing on the runs of production for each. I was on the list for whichever chipper came into stock first. At the end of the day I’m glad I have the 8800, the extra 1” in capacity and folding table doesn’t really justify the extra $1,000 for me anyway.

Can you save a bladder to somehow fit over the drum to help keep H2o out of the chipper? A bladder from the wood crates?

I probably could, I might look into getting some sort of cover for it, I was thinking a big grill cover of sorts!
