Yoh whatJimmy is talking about is true… my uncle was a journalist for the Weekly Review, one day he was abducted and tortured at the famous Moi Chambers at Nyayo house. When he was released he was blind because of the torture he went through. They fled the country and he vowed never to come back unless he dies or Moi dies. Sadly my uncle died first before Moi. His name was Odhiambo Okite

Jimmy Gathu and Tedd Josiah are the kinds of guys I'd want to be my uncle, both being 18 years older than me. Great vibes.

I have a student who is like Jimmy and I shared this with the parent. When they love something they get jumpy when telling the story and they have a strong memory retention. Am loving this.

I remember in our house my father would look left, look right before saying the word moi(in whispers)and our next neighbour was more than one acre away, then later on in life after 30 yrs of my life, I discovered some documents as we cleaned our mothers house, kumbe my mother when she was working for the airforce, she was part of the court martial which hanged ochuka, even my father never knew my mother was part of the court martial, he knew when I knew, sometimes I ask my mum some stories she is like weee wachana na hiyo mambo

Those were the days when shoeshiners & sweet vendors were CID (now DCI). My parents used to read so-called seditious publications at night in their bedroom, hiding copies in a safe behind a bookshelf. They had KANU membership cards, the KANU Jogoo emblem & a portrait of Moi on display just in case.

So much truth in this episode. Life changed forever for my family after 1982 coup. My father was imagined as an enemy of state/Moi, thanks to chiefs feeding Moi propaganda. He remained 'watched' by chiefs until he died in 1987.

Chiefs area was a no go zone. The chief would chapa adults strokes on the bum hapo nje. Then there was the raising and lowering of the flag. Even when you drove you heard the whistle and stopped otherwise you will sleep in cell.

@A star yes, many of us kenyans left Kenya in 91 cos things really went downhill. It was the beginning of mass exodus. Graduates could not get jobs cos of tribe. If you had a government job, you were ruled by a specific tribe and could not dare even have an attitude or speak a word. Else you may disappear like many people were ending up in Nyayo house chambers

Dope interview. But there's something inaccurate in what Jimmy has said. Moi did not become a different person after 1982 - if you interview older activists you'll find out that there were some people who were tortured in 79 and even 81. Not to mention the establishment of other political parties was criminalized before the coup. Hakuwa "Mtu mpoa" until 1982 - it might be popular history, but it's just not true.

Si kwa ubaya but colonialists were well organized. What if they stayed a little longer? About the coup and tribalism, politicians took Kenyans down that unfortunate road. #Inatuhusu
