This is another Random Thoughts video, where I share something outside of my regular reviews. This time, it’s a little comment about paint apps fall offs, featuring a masterful repaint of my PNSO Ankylosaurus by Jay Carriere from the Dinosaur Dungeon, and also some advice thrown in.
What was a very flat late run model has been transformed to a masterpiece that returns not just the beauty of the prototype images, but seems to surpass it at times. I had not bargained for how much this repaint would elevate the model, so much so that this did become a review of sorts. Because the sculpt to me, is just that good, and what better way to show off Jay’s work too!
PNSO has consistently developed and brought to the market outstanding, up-to-date reconstructions of dinosaurs I absolutely love. With a paint application worthy of that sculpt, that makes this a model to own. I am glad that together, PNSO and Jay Carriere have brought about something that will be a highlight of my ankylosaur collection.
Correction: I mentioned being able to see the supranarial caputegulum. When viewing the video I could see more clearly it was really the horny beak we're seeing, and not the snca, which I'll assume underlies this.
For more on Jay Carriere’s work, and how to contact him, here is his social media information.

It's super weird that the paint just seems to have changed. Fellow collectors who bought the Ankylosaurus when it came out have colors that match the promotional images. Then it appears a new run of models has this weird grey wash. I think my Pachyrhinosaurus might be suffering from the same issue, but not to the extreme of the Anky. It has a black wash on its face, while others don't.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 3 жыл бұрын
The issue really comes down to cost. As newer and newer figures come out, the older ones get less and less popular. So there is a common practice to paint them with less layers. Each layer also involves waiting to dry before the next application, so the production cycle is really long. Companies therefore try to shorten this cycle for older figures and save the fuller cycle for the new ones. My own PNSO Pachyrhinosaurus actually came out better than I had expected, but I got the first run one. I would hope that it's still relatively recent to maintain its complexity for a while yet; it's really a beautiful figure!

I have had a really old JP style velociraptor from Papo since I was a little kid. Its paint got wore out a bit overtime, but even to this day the paint application is just gorgeous. The Papo raptor basically set an equation in my mind; [Papo = No disapointment]. Over a decade has passed, in a vibe of nostalgia, I've decided to order a Papo allosaurus. But when I got the product, something was... off. The overall colors are dull, the paint application is just sloppy. I searched through the internet what happened to Papo and I realized that the company is no longer like what I used to know. The equation has broken, and my Papo raptor became the fossil of Papo's good ol' days. In the process of searching, luckily, I found your channel. Through your channel I found PNSO! I saw your 'Paul the allosaurus' review. My experience with Papo made me to hesitate for a while because your video was out in 2021 and I saw it in 2023. There was a possiblity of that 2 - year - gap might made its paint application into a dissapointment. But I've decided to ordered it and 2 weeks later, PNSO allosaurus has arrived. And fortunately, it didn't go to the second case in your video at 3:09. Compared to your 2021's early version, my allosaurus' overall colors are a tinny tiny little bit dull and the color scheme is a bit more... greener, but not in a bad way. In fact, it became more like its promotional image with an exception of its head. The head is in darker colors. There is black paint application along the ventral margin of the premaxilla - maxilla - jugal, the snout, and the nasal crests. The eyes is still blue and its pupils have become larger; which I personally think it is a tiny but huge upgrade at the same time. Maybe the second case is 'the general route' that most products follows. The first batch is nice, but later products' paint applications become dull. Nobody can say for sure that my PNSO allosaurus' case will not go to the general route. I totally agree with you. "Pay now." Most of the time we will have much better experiences when we pay early.

Thanks for a detailed account of your experience! Papo for me has always been a sad tale. They started off really well and received so many accolades. Indeed for many years, the only Allosaurus I had was the Papo. There was something really special about it. They were basically at the high level of sculpted detail and with a goodwill equivalent to PNSO's current reputation. Somewhere along the line something changed, with the latest outcome being the monstrosity that is the green Protoceratops. I'm glad that the falloff in paint apps isn't as great for you. I suppose that PNSO starts off with such high quality, that even any 'fall off' will be in the grand scheme of things considered very good still. Perhaps this is less so today, but certainly when PNSO started it was very noticeable. It is more obvious in other manufacturers who don't enjoy the same success as PNSO. For more on this, you could check out Jurassic Plastic's KZfaq channel, where he goes into great depth on colours and applications. Nowadays whenever PNSO has a really complexly painted product, I advise getting it very soon. Recent examples are the Tsintaosaurus and the Deinocheirus. I suspect that they will present an updated version of T Rex soon, and if you're a fan of T Rex, you might want to be on the lookout for that! I'm sure the sculpt will be amazing, and they will find a paint app to match! 😊

@@DinosDragons Thanks for your additional informations! Adding a bit more about Papo, the sculptor, Seo Jung-woon(서정운), who sculpted most of Papo's dinosaurs, is not Papo's main sculptor anymore since 2022. He didn't quit Papo, but this is really sad news since the sculpts of most of Papo dinosaur figures in past 2 decades are his works. The new main sculptor, however, his skill doesn't match up Mr. Seo. I think the 2022 Protoceratops monstrosity you've mentioned is related to this. The sculpt of 2022 Protoceratops is NOT something that Mr. Seo would make. The sculpt of 2022 Mosasaurus' far better quality confirms it, since this is Mr. Seo's work. We cannot see clearly what is going on inside Papo, but change of the main sculptor is a disaster for us. A funny story to add about PNSO Allosaurus; I saw several reviews on KZfaq, and I noticed that packaging is on mix of english and chinese. The thing is... mine is full-on chinese. I was kinda lazy and got mine through a proxy-buyer. I received the shipping box that was taped with something extraordinary - Tape full of PNSO logos! Probably because I live in Korea and the proxy-buyer is a Korean, they ordered it directly from PNSO since that is a faster way. That sounds great, but the thing is I don't speak chinese so... yeah. I can't read a thing from what is written on the packaging and pamplets(?) that comes with the product. XD Oh, and the reddish tint on Allosaurus' tail is still there. I forgot to mention about it :)

I have the PNSO Ankylosaurus with the same dull paint job which I purchased in December 2020. Whilst the paint job didn't match what was promised I personally really like the more naturalistic, subtle colouration and wasn't disappointed. Indeed it is one of my favourite PNSO figures. Whilst I'm not a fan of saturated or brightly coloured models, they do definitely bring out the subtle details in the sculpt.

Thank you for the Video. Your Videos are well recieved from the DTF Community aswell, i would say. Paintapplications on Models are and will always be a big Topic to discuss about. I remember the Big "****Storm" when the first In Hand Images from The "limited" Spinosaurus from Papo went online. And of course i understood the disappointment. But not the Anger. The Price is always something to consider, as you said well. But for example the EoFauna Figures and the Papo Spinosaurus. The Eofauna Atlassaurus is (in my small opinion) a Masterpiece. It retails for around 23 to 27 Euros here in Germany. That is an astonishing Price. If i had to pay a Retailprice of around 50, it would be still a wonderful Figure, but i maybe would be more nitpicky about. Same goes for the Papo Spinosaurus (2019). I got it for around 40 Euros here in Germany. Overseas, it was around 60? That is something completey different. But we all know that. PNSO made something really special and People love it and hate it at the same time. Looking at their Amargasaurus now and then is a real shame. But from what i see, people have absolutely different perceptions of what makes a Paintjob good and bad. Soemtimes its the Choice of Colours of the Pattern used. But for others, it is how the Paint was applied. It is really hard to tell through a Video, and i really think the Repaint (of your Ankylosaurus) was done really really good! But i have to admit, that i like the original Look more in this case. This happens not that often and i think it is interesting. Another example is maybe the Ceratopsian Line from BotM. These are really outstanding and it is great to have these, but i really dislike the ways the Paint is applied. It is just nothing for me. I always have the feeling they look toyish and cheap. But of course, they are not. This is not the fault of the Figures itself, rather than my perception of what i want with a Figure of a prehistoric Animal. Essien 2.0 for me is absolutely worth the Price a paid for it. It was around 27 Euros from AliExpress, and yes it is small, but the Paintapplication is outstanding in Hand. Complex and lifelike. And fine. But that is just my two cents. This is an important Topic for us Collectors (Feels weird to write that.) and it is so interesting to hear and look at other Opinions and Feelings regarding that Topic. I am in the Situation, that i can repaint Figures by myself, but Money is an Issue. So sometimes, the Paintjob is secondary to me, but the Sculpt is something that is most important to me. The Safari Tylosaurus from Doug Watson looks like a Clown and i can't stand that look. But beneath that horrible Paint, there lies a wonderful Sculpt and after a Repaint, it really looks like a completely different Figure. I love that.
@MB7mabe7
@MB7mabe7 3 жыл бұрын
I'm agree with your comment. For me the sculpt is the most important, after that I don't care to much about a perfect paint job or a perfect color scheme, nor the perfect patern, as far as all these 3. If it has a beautiful patern, If it is a good color scheme and nice application to it, it's okay. I'm taking about "cheap figures" like PNSO or Papo, If we talk about Nanmu, well Nanmu always do it perfectly, but the price is way much higher. Also they only do JP/JW style tho... I preffer PNSO
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 3 жыл бұрын
@Kapitaenosvrvs Thank you for your long comment! I am sure few people expected the Papo Spino to really look like the prototype, but the way Papo hyped it up and then let people down probably created a greater disparity than would be normal. Paintjob aside, no one likes being lied to. When you are told something is a _limited_ edition, and then after that you find it anywhere and everywhere, that stinks. I even got mine on Amazon at a discount a year after it released. Compare that to trying to get a hold of the Rebor Monty Titanoboa. I am sorry to hear about the EU prices plus tax. That certainly really puts a damper on things, and also forces you to be far more selective and choosy. I would imagine that if I had to pay so much for a figure, and then the shortfall is too high, it would be very disappointing. My collection would definitely be a lot smaller than it is. When you say you prefer the original were you talking about the powdered look I got, or the first run ones that people received? BotM indeed have the kind of paint apps that, were they to be found on a static, non-poseable model, would be unacceptable to most people. To be fair however, that’s not what their USP is. I believe in their case a lot of cost has gone into the actual design and production, not to mention when you have articulated figures, you can’t have too subtle paintapplications that easily scrape off with movement. I approached a couple of people to repaint my BotM Styracosaurus, for example, and none of them would guarantee their work unless I agreed to not articulate it after painting. Absolutely agree with you on Essien 2.0. The fineness of the sculpt is something you can really appreciate only when you have it in hand. Not just the look, but the tactile experience of holding something like this is fantastic. A good sculpt with terrible paint apps can always be repainted, but a bad sculpt with fantastic paint apps, you can’t do anything about. Fortunately you can do that on your own, saving money and gleaning much satisfaction in the process. I’m glad you’ve saved Doug Watson’s Tylosaurus. His sculpts are often greatly let down by the paint apps! Here’s hoping to a full 1:35 Spinosaurus from PNSO!

We're talking perfect camouflage, weathering including dust, rust ,mud, battle damage so I'm sure I can do a fantastic job on the dinosaurs and I assure you it's much more complicated to do a perfect paint job on a WW2 armored vehicle with hundreds of details than that of a dinosaur body and head , mouth and teeth included.
