Everybody will be pulling you from different directions and telling you where you should go. Go where you will feel the most at home that also has great coaching. You do not need me to tell you this but, train hard and always look for ways to improve and always remember that there is someone out there who is working just as hard, if not harder, that wants to be able to say they are the best and make you and everyone else look bad. Do not let magazine interviews, etc. interfere with your focus.

This is a concern of mine because I peaked in my athletic performance at 14. It can happen. Up until then I was winning meets, never at Pearce’s level obviously but still National, and then slowly other teen girls started overtaking me, some of whom are now elite athletes in adulthood. Despite my best efforts, lots of training and comps, I just plateaued. I was a sprinter too. One of my coaches said they’d seen a lot of teenagers burn out in their time. Sometimes it can actually be a risk to be the freak at a super young age. Obviously I hope this is not the case for this girl. I would love to see her be the next Usain Bolt!
