£14,000+ TO FIX MY LAND ROVER!

I took my British Military land rover series 3 lightweight to the garage to see how much it would cost me to have it fixed and up as part of a full restoration. Little did I know it would be more than £14,000 and that's without the paint job! I did get a few things fixed on it though, which I explain in the video. Plus I got some new tyres fitted. I'm looking forward to this journey and going camping with the land rover!

Speak to MAD Ford Engineering. Mick is a wizard with these things. There's definitely no need for it to cost anywhere near that much. There's a lot of those jobs you can do yourself, even without mechanical experience.

14K? Damn. Well, there's only so much time in a day, Mike! We can't be masters of everything. Nothing wrong with not knowing how to repair something someone else can. Not sure about the mold treatment, but if that works it's good to know.

Lovely lightweight, I learnt to drive in one nearly 30 years ago and have owned 4 over the years, plus a lot of other Land Rovers. Don't be too concerned by the costs and figures from the specialists, you'll be able to do most of that yourself, they're very easy vehicles to learn mechanical skills on. Check e-bay for lots of the generic parts, John Craddocks and P.A. Blanchard are the place for more specialist Lightweight/military parts. Enjoy the process and I look forward to the videos of it.

When you own/drive an older vehicle, you need to learn how to fix it. Trust me, it pays to learn! 😊 And a suggestion is to check out a channel called Maximus Ironthumper. He has a 25 odd video playlist where he fixed an older landrover(that he still drives). He also an ongoing restoration series on a later landrover, its Project Kermit. They may be of help. Max is in England, near Avon from memory.

It'll be far less once you knock out the chassis repair from that list - to the tune of 4k. The chassis repair is, as you said, full strip of the vehicle and rebuilding, so that's a 'fun' project to do over time, but the chassis is probably fixable via welding. And after that, you'll be a mechanic! Fix the springs first, and the canopy, as well as get some of the rest of the 'red' items sorted. Amber stuff can be worked on in bits and pieces over time.

I have always oil-sprayed all my Landrover chassis and bulkhead. From front to back, i spray the fxxking lot!!! It covers everything in oil, prevents corrosion EVER, and it covers all the bolts and springs in oil, to allow removal of the bolts in future!!! Use a cheap engine oil and spray inside the chassis, out riggers and especially the rear of the chassis, and even the door tops, which stop corrosion and allows the glass to slide easily!!!! Trust me, i had a few of these things and they are great!!!!!nLol.

Your land rover might be in that troublesome "in between era" that afflicts some car models. Old enough to still more or less restore some parts yourself but new enough where it is a bloody nightmare to do over all. (For example, the 1987 Jeep YJ used an infamously garbage Peugeot 5 speed transmission, and it is generally cheaper and easier to just swap out the thing. American Motors was in deep financial trouble at the time, and YJs suffered as a result.) BUT...750 QUID for plain Jane leaf springs?!!! Are they high?!

Garages have always been rip off merchants. Especially, main dealers. When I was younger, in my 30s, I did a nut and bolt rebuild on an old 1958 Austin A55. It took me 2 years, but it was just a project to keep my mind occupied. You don't need to replace those leaf springs, unless they break, they can be re tempered. I had mine done by an old bloke near Kings Cross in London, but he's probably dead now.

I owned a series 3 since 1982, bet if looked now it would be leaking oil somewhere and the front propshaft boot will need changing, its like the Forth bridge. The chassis is the main thing give it a good paint, work out what parts need replacing, new chassis a last resort. Great thing is theres loads online, youtube about landie repairs nowadays.

Buy a haynes manual and get stuck in. Old landrovers are the best to learn about cars as they just nuts and bolts. I was buying landrovers from 13 when i should have been at school taught my self everything from haynes manuels. if i can do it anyone can. Take pics and label parts as they come off you be fine go for it.

Buy a Haynes manual, they dont actually do one for a lightweight but it is essentially a series 3, If you can afford them get paralytic springs for it, Paddock spares are good, yrm for bodywork/ metal work but are expensive , just about everything thing is interchangeable apart from the bodywork and chassis

I take it the £14,000 is inclusive of fitting a new chassis? I would say it depends on the state of your current chassis but it might be better to repair the one you have got?? I'm sure some of the Land Rover enthusiasts would be able to help you, some might even have stock piles of spares they don't mind selling to another enthusiast. It might even be possible for enthusiasts near by to give you help to work on your own vehicle. As you know, doing the work yourself gives such satisfation but if you are offered help then consider taking it. It would be a good way to advance the build. Best of luck Mike, i am quite envious .

Power Wash/degrease inside and out including the engine and knock off as much rust as possible from the under carriage. Doing this will let you really lay eyes on every nook and cranny of the vehicle and formulate a plan of attack. Obviously, watch how too videos for each of the task and find a good Range Rover forum/group, make some friends and perhaps do a collab or two for the channel. You may be able to borrow some specialty tools and get some good advice a long the way. Looking forward to it. One day I will be doing the same for a Fiat Pinnaferina Spider 1980-84, and I cant wait for all of the headaches and frustrations... a passion of love!
