In the studio today, Queen Katherine begins the Alternative Substrates to Yupo series. In this series, we will learn about many different surfaces that work well with alcohol inks (AI). Yupo is a great substrate to paint on with AIs but it's expensive and flat paper. There are many other surfaces that work just as well and are more versatile than Yupo - from jewelry pieces to home decor. Please subscribe so you are notified when each new video in this series is posted. This is going to be a wildly fun adventure that will open a whole new world to you about painting with AIs...you're not going to want to miss any of it!
In this first episode, we focus on washers. Yes, the round little metal or vinyl parts one normally finds in a toolbox. When spruced up with alcohol inks (and a bit of UV resin for durability), washers become an indispensable jewelry finding, an irreplaceable part for keychains, and many other fun-to-make projects. There are unlimited ways to combine AIs and washers - your imagination is truly the only limitation. Hopefully, this episode will teach you some new ideas and spur your creativity to whip up your own washers...for whatever purpose you envision. Please tag me if you create AI washers - I would love to see what you make! ❤

I love washers. We were poor as little girl, if I saw washers on the ground I would pick them up and save them for jewelry. As an adult if I see washers on the ground I still pick them and smile. Good memories. Now because of you I know what to do to make them beautiful. Thank you. I have tears now. Show us more.😍

You ARE a Queen! My gosh, you are so great at explaining things! Thanks for sharing these incredible tips. Also, thank you for saying that the video is sped up in some parts, to give us beginners a proper sense of timing. I always think I’m never going to be good at anything from YT videos because everyone seem to show things with ease and speed, so it feels like I don’t have the “magic” 😂 I’m both appreciative and excited to try these techniques. You are an exceptional teacher. Thank you!

WOW! What a way to start my day! Thank you so much for your kind words - I can't tell you what they mean to me. I really appreciate the time you took to leave a comment, and the comment itself! You are going to rock this, I can tell. It isn't hard. I promise. I purposefully chose projects that beginners could do and be successful at. Don't doubt yourself - just get out your washers and alcohol inks and go for it! There's no wrong way to do this. I have great confidence in you! You CAN do this - the proof is that I did it. If I can do it, so can you. Have a little faith, my friend. You'll be amazed at the things you can create. I think trying new things is so fun! It is scary (what if I waste all these supplies?!), but it's exhilarating, too. You can never be sure where your mind and hands will take you. I say just jump in and try it! You'll never know until you do. Anyone creative enough to leave such a sweet comment can certainly do these washers. Come on, sistah - have some confidence! And thank you again - your comment made my day! xx

@SargentBubblescom
@SargentBubblescom Жыл бұрын
Hey! Thank you so much for commenting and subscribing -- that made my week! Yupo is a clothlike paper. It's expensive - you can get around 10 sheets for $20ish dollars. (At least, that's about what it was the last time I checked. Unfortunately, I have been out of the mixed media world for a bit. Fortunately, it's been onto a new adventure - soap making!) You can look for Yupo on Amazon; other craft suppliers usually have it. It's really just a glorified paper that alcohol ink works well on. But as I've shown in this series, many other surfaces can be used instead of Yupo. (At one point, Yupo was the go-to for alcohol inks.) I really hope this helps! If you have any other questions, please let me know. Have a great day!

Really I enjoy alot ! 3 questions : 1- aren't them heavy? 2- back of washers are ugly. What do you do with them? 3- I couldn't understand what was your recommendation instead of using Yupo?
@SargentBubblescom
@SargentBubblescom 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Zahra! I'm glad you enjoyed it. In answer to your questions... 1) They aren't very heavy. Certainly not too heavy to wear on a necklace. The smaller washers would make great earrings. I wouldn't wear the larger washers as earrings because they would be too heavy. But the larger washers are fine as pendants on necklaces. 2) The backs are ugly! You can either paint them a solid color with alcohol inks or decorate the backs with the same technique. The washers are heavy enough that you shouldn't have a problem with them flipping over while wearing them, but painting the back is a good idea. I would repeat the decorative process on the back, so you have a two-sided washer. 3) There are cheaper papers you can buy on Amazon that are good for alcohol inks. I like the photograph paper by Kirkland Signature Professional Glossy Inkjet Photo Paper (especially good for the wispy technique), and I enjoy using Nara paper rather than Yupo. Nara comes in various sizes (and even black!), and a lot of people are finding that Nara is a good alternative to Yupo - it certainly saves quite a bit of money! You may want to give it a try and see what you think. I hope I answered your questions. If you need anything else - or if my answers weren't clear - leave another comment, and I'll be happy to clarify anything or answer any other questions you have. I appreciate your comment, and I hope you enjoy playing with alcohol inks!

Oooh! The tool box is a fascinating place to find art supplies! Yes, those are the types of washers I used. Just plain old metal (or vinyl) washers from a hardware store. I don't treat the back, though you could decorate the backside as well if desired. I don't do anything to the back because the washers are heavy enough they don't "flip." Have a great time!

Hi again- I tried your suggestion of trying something harder than a makeup sponge over the weekend. I used a block of wood with felt on it, and a little stamper I found at the dollar store with a piece of double stick tape and then felt on top and neither one really worked. Just colored the washer with ink with none of the effects. Might you have any other suggestions? I had good luck with dropping the ink right on to the washer and got some great effects. I just covered them with resin yesterday. I really wanted to try to get the same effect that you did with the stamping though. I hate to give up on anything until I can do it. Just stubborn I guess.

I just subscribed! I was just wondering if the gel activates the inks a little. Should I varnish first? Also do I need the UV lights for the resin? Thanks
@SargentBubblescom
@SargentBubblescom 6 ай бұрын
You only need the lights if you are using UV resin. If you are going to use regular resin, then you just have to wait for the resin to cure (keep it flat and put an inverted box or something over the top so dust, animal hair, etc can't get into the resin) - if you use the UV resin, then you need the UV lights. No need to varnish before adding the resin - the resin does not activate the alcohol inks, so you are safe there. Watch the amount of resin you use - you'll use less than you think you need. I used a toothpick to spread out the resin on the washer. Using a toothpick also allows you to dome the resin nicely. If you wind up going the UV resin route, then the lightbox you need isn't really expensive - look on Amazon. It's the same lights one would use for a gel manicure.

Great video! What do you do with the opposite side. Do you repeat it on the opposite side, or color that side.
@SargentBubblescom
@SargentBubblescom 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Anne - I usually either repeat it or color it. I used to add a piece of color coordinated felt but that wound up feeling clunky and was so hard to fit exactly to the back. (It looked interesting, though, and was comfortable to wear as a pendant. Especially on the larger washers.) I recommend repeating the technique you used on the front, so it doesn't matter if the pendant flips over. Or you could use the same colors and do a totally different technique on the back! Due to the way the resin domes, it is easy to have the washers lie flat so you can work on "side b." That's a great question that I should have addressed in the video - thank you for pointing out my lapse! I'm really glad you asked and I hope I have answered your question. Hi there! Thanks for your comment and question. I don't know why polymer clay wouldn't stick - if you have issues with it sticking then I would go ahead and make the bail out of pc, then use a dab of super glue or E6000 to glue it onto the washer. You could make some gorgeous, lightweight bails from polymer clay! Good luck with your adventures!

I’ve got a big question: Is UV resin sufficient protection from fading for metal surfaces (brass, stainless steel, copper and aluminum) hand-painted with alcohol inks? I’m concerned the awesome colors will soon evaporate.
@SargentBubblescom
@SargentBubblescom 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jean - Yes, UV resin is sufficient protection. My washers look just like the day they were painted - and I just noticed they've been sitting in the sun for the last year. UV resin provides a rock hard covering over the alcohol inks so they stay safe under there. It's important to get the "hard" type of UV resin as it comes in a "soft" type also. Use the "hard" type and you won't have any problems with your gorgeous creations fading or altering in any way. I hope that helps answer your question! Thanks for asking! xx

@SargentBubblescom

Hi Joanne - you only need the UV lights to cure the UV resin if that's what you are using. (You don't need them at all if you are using regular resin.) Once you have cured the UV resin, you are finished with the lights. I hope that helps clear up a little of the confusion for you! Please ask if you have any other questions - and thanks for watching! ❤️

I tried to "stamp" a metal washer with alcohol ink on a facial sponge and all that I got was a solid colored washer with none of the effects that you are getting with your wooden stamper with felt on it. Hi Debbie - you're the best! Thank you for the compliments - they mean the world to me! I have found that makeup sponges kind of disintegrate with alcohol inks. Disintegrate and turn into this weird sticky mush. I also think you failed to get a good impression because they are so soft - the applicator I used is hard. If you don't have an applicator, you can always just use double-sided tape and tape a piece of felt to something plastic - a pill bottle, for example. The felt is the key - and just about any felt will work. (Every felt I've used has worked, but I hesitate to say any felt will work because sure enough you'll try some obscure felt and it won't work, and I'll look like a big ol' liar!) I really like Marabu inks, and I don't think that's the issue - I haven't run into any issues with Marabu. I especially love their rainbow ink and have stamped with that many times without issue. I really think it's the makeup sponge. Give the felt a try and see what happens. I think you'll be successful. If not, let me know and we'll troubleshoot some more. I wish you the very best in trying the technique again (don't give up!), and I hope you have better results. Making that one change will probably make all the difference in the world! Take good care and stay healthy - and thank you again for your kind comments. Also, THANK YOU for subscribing!! You made my day! ❤

@@SargentBubblescom Thanks so much!!! I will try to make a stamp using a block of wood that I have. I saw someone- maybe it was you? who suggeseted glueing the loop part of velcro onto something and then laying the felt onto the loopy part of the velcro. Do you think that that would make it too "mushy"? Your video on alcohol ink and washers is by far the best I've seen so far. Can't wait to see what else you come up with.

@@debbieschoop-wilson3612 I think that should be fine. Try it and see! A big part of what I find so fascinating about art - and AIs in particular - is the experimentation! I think that would work well - I just haven't tried it. I've seen the video where someone does that but I can't remember who it was. Oops! Let me know how it works - I bet it's awesome! Leave it blank - no one will see the back. If you're that concerned about it you can always do the back as well, or add a disk of decorative paper to it and put some Diamond Glaze over the top of it.

Do you recommend a certain brand of the hard UV Resin?
@SargentBubblescom
@SargentBubblescom Жыл бұрын
Hi Susan! I don't really have a favorite UV resin - as long as you ensure it's the hard type. If you purchase the soft variety, then it will never cure to a hard, durable finish. They have lots of brands on Amazon that are good. I just look for the cheapest or middle-of-the-road. No need to buy the most expensive. :) I hope that helps!

How do you use these in Jewelry. Great technique!
@SargentBubblescom
@SargentBubblescom 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Maggie - There are lots of options. You can tie different twines, strings, or ribbons around them. My favorite is to use silk sari ribbon. You can also use chain and glue a bail onto the washer to make a pendant or a bracelet. And don't just think of premade necklace chain - there are a gazillion cool chains available that are easily turned into necklaces or bracelets. The best part with that kind of chain is that you decide how long you make your piece! You can glue ring backs onto the washer to wear them as rings or attach earring findings to wear them as earrings. You can also drill small holes in the washer to attach different findings like jump rings, chain, etc. Making keychains can be another fun way to use these, especially if you use graduated sizes and taper them on chain or ribbon. My grandkids made a bunch (they were only 3 and 7) and we attached them to the ring part of a mason jar lid. We hung curling ribbon down from the ring part and tied the washers onto the other end of the curling ribbon to make a sort of windchime. It was SO cute! You can attach many together to make a full necklace or just use one as a pendant. The other fun thing to do is to attach them to a bobby pin blank and wear them in your hair. (You need to use something like E6000 for that.) There are so many ideas! Whether you choose to wear them as a long pendant or a full short necklace, a bracelet, ring, hair accessory, earrings, make a keychain, or even create wind chimes out of them, the ideas will come as you make them. There is no shortage of things you can do with the finished washers! I hope I answered your question or at least gave you some directions to start. Just be careful - once you start making them it's really hard to stop! xx

When using UV Resin do you need to also dry it under a uv light?
@SargentBubblescom
@SargentBubblescom 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Linda - When using UV resin all you have to do is dry it under the UV light. I just bought a cheap nail dryer on Amazon (usually under gel nail dryer or uv resin dryer - there are TONS of them!) and that's what I use. It works perfectly! 60 seconds under that baby, and the resin is perfectly cured. I also got my bottle of UV resin on good old Amazon - just note you want "hard" resin and not "soft." It's so simple to use - there is absolutely nothing to be scared of. And it dries to a hard, shiny finish so much faster than regular resin. I don't use UV resin on everything, in fact, I'm a die-hard fanatic of regular resin, but why bother with that on small projects? UV dries so quickly that you don't have time to get dust or a stray cat hair in it, and come on - the results are instantaneous! What's better than that?! I think I paid right around $20-25 for my dryer and it just keeps going and going. Never had an issue with it. I really hope you'll get one and try this - you'll be so glad you did. You'll also find you have an addiction to these...and to using UV resin on anything you can fit in the dryer! Lol Let me know how it goes - and reach out if I can help further! 😀

So I made some washers, put the resin on and then put them under a uv light. I bought the same resin and uv light that you had the links for but the resin doesn’t seem to cure. It seems tacky even after several minutes under the light. Any clue as to what I’m doing wrong?

@@lindafioritto6639 Hmmm I don't know what it could be. I hate to say that after you invested in the materials, but I can't think of what could be happening. I haven't encountered that issue before. Have you tried putting some resin on a clean washer to see if it cures on plain metal? I suspect you are running into a reaction between the alcohol inks and the resin, but I'm not sure. Are your inks fully cured (dry) before applying the resin? It's such a small amount of resin that it should cure in one cycle of your dryer. I would try the resin on other things to see if it cures on those things. I really hate to hear you are having problems and feel bad. I am happy to help you troubleshoot - and that's where I would start. Let's make sure you got a good bottle of resin before we go any further. If you are able to establish that then I would make sure your alcohol inks are completely dry before adding the resin on top. (It shouldn't matter, but just to be really sure that isn't causing an issue you may as well explore the idea.) I hope some of this has been helpful - please let me know what you find out! I'll keep thinking on this. :)

That is why some people prefer to wear them on bracelets or necklaces rather than as earrings. You are right - they are not flimsy, light baubles. But they are fine around the neck or wrist.
