If you want a bump in battery life perhaps. I upgraded to the M3 Pro from an M1 because I felt the battery life wouldn’t be a lot worse with 3nm

As a M1 Pro owner, I am totally agree with you, M1 pro is more than enough for daily tasks and work flow, no need to upgrade for little change like 100 nits or HDMI 2.1 or bluetooth 5.3, thanks for this nice video.

It’s a mindset change - that we’ve gone through powered by our smartphones and now think ALL our devices should be replaced after a couple years (in some instances one, sometimes 3). But we’ve GOTTA walk that thinking back! Oftentimes we change our gadget because a nice, new shiny one’s come along, that’s all. This year, it’s “Space Black”. Put on a bloody skin - and change it every year as a matter-of-fact if you want a new machine! Ask yourself: Am I typing faster? Are the words or spreadsheet changes taking longer to appear on the screen? If I’m posting 3 videos every hour (too many!) does an extra minute, or even two, cripple my workday? Likely NOT! And on, and on, and on. But, if you’re like me, you bet you’re a$$ you’re gonna buy the machine that your uppermost budget limit can afford - without any damn GOOD reason! It’s uber-stupid I know, but I’ve been well-conditioned.

I would not buy a new machine. Yes, I was that person who had to Upgrade every year to get a new IPhone. I even leased, so I could upgrade every year. I started with the 5 then to the 10X Max, and after paying hundreds of dollars to rent a phone, I gave back a beautiful shiny looking brand new last year’s model IPHONE. I have a 13 PRO now, and Apple can take a look at T-Mobile who bought to my awareness what a naive person I was. At the same time the IPhone 13 Pro was a mistake to buy. I probably would not have lost a minimal amount of faith in IPhone if I purchased an IPHONE 13 PRO MAX. Once I pay this off in March. I will definitely be making serious decisions about future purchases. And if I decide to purchase an IPHONE, it will be a PRO MAX. This is going to be a hard decision. I might experiment to discover the actual quality of my phone, and how long will it last. I’ve never had the privilege to purchase an Apple computer though that would be my first choice. I couldn’t afford it. The one thing that stopped me from purchasing about 8 years ago was it didn’t have the capability to add storage.

It's important to note that there's actually been a pretty good reason to upgrade phones consistently over the past few years. Some of it is planned obsolescence, but phones have been consistently getting waaayy better each generation. It's only just started to slow down over COVID, but the latest generation is normally a big leap. The big leaps have been in battery, cameras, processing speed, and 4g LTE / 5g cellular tech, which all massively improve the experience of using a phone. Laptops haven't had that same burst of innovation until M1 was released, so it made less sense to upgrade your laptop consistently. And most people dont upgrade their laptop often. Going from Intel to Apple silicon will be a good decision for almost anyone who uses their laptop for more than 2 hours per day, even if it's only for the better battery life. But the now incremental upgrades between M1 and M3 will not be worth it for most people.

@@cyropox8235 I partially agree with your ideas. Realistically it is about revenue. And the 10X Max though is a beautiful phone, its performance is lacking. The overall quality and performance of IPHONE has been disappointing to me; I own the 13 Pro related to the screen size, and my purchase contract with T-Mobile. I changed to Samsung Galaxy 20 in 2020 for reasons I’ve addressed about the 10s Max. I don’t prefer Android, so I was excited about the IPhone 13 Pro, which coincidentally was released at the same time my lease ended for the Samsung. I’m disappointed with that phone mostly related to the battery life, and it’s consistently getting too warm causing lagging, or it would not load. The latest software updates did improve that issue after I possessed a dysfunctional phone for 2 years, and I did report my issues to Apple. I don’t want to be inappropriate because I do love IPHONES, and I do feel this isn’t the platform to express my opinion. I am pleased that Apple did develop the software updates. That they became aware of the issues. Yes, I’m very impressed that Apple utilized titanium. I am willing to be open minded. Apple for me I feel I need to be reassured with proof. I don’t condone corporate manipulation. That’s why I chose Matt as my favorite for learning about technology because he’s honest and authentic. Their focus seems to be the camera/ video, which is most likely the demand. Let’s be realistic Apple is brilliant in their development of a profitable corporation. Yes, they use technology brilliantly to create amazing products.

Thanks Matt - great review and advice. In fact, it confirmed my decision to buy a refurbished M1 Pro (10c/16c/16gb/1tb/1yr wty) to go with my "old" iPad Pro 11! It's that iPP11 that sealed the deal, as the 2 1/2 year old M1 still eats through ANYTHING I throw at it. Same goes for my daughter's two year old M1 Pro MacBook - it doesn't even take a deep breath. I think I'll be in good shape until Apple finally releases what I REALLY WANT - the MacPad Pro running dual boot MacOS/iPadOS (good luck with that)...

If I had a choice, I'd love to get a 13inch MBA M2 in silver. My old laptop was a 2013 15inch Macbook Pro and it recently got broken. Vivid for mac makes the screen brightness difference not an issue. If you have an m2/m1 check it out it takes your brightness up to 1000 nits.

Picked up the 14" M1 Pro right before they launched the M2 Pro. I have the 8C 32Gb ram 1Tb storage and it's more than sufficient to handle my heaviest workflow. Was a Bar student when I got it, and now a working lawyer. Most law firms offer work laptops anyway. Given the amount I spent on my M1 Pro, doubt I'll be upgrading my mac anytime soon

For my consideration, the M3Pro with the USB-c ports and the studio quality mic(s) saves me in buying a thunderbolt to USBc hub (for video import) and a studio mic for my simple marketing videos and occassional podcasting.

Not sure how you do you pourcentage but it’s should be (P2-P1)/P1. So single core is +34%, multi core 37%. Not bad. Comparing battery life gain due to E cores count increase would also be interesting.

I went ahead ang got the base model 16" m3 pro mbp in space black, despite people telling me to get an m2 instead... ...the difference in battery life alone is nothing to scoff at, I don't mind the same performance results it's still very powerful and i'm coming from a 13" m1 MBP so I'm pretty happy with this machine.

I have the M1 pro 14 inch 2021 base model with 16gb memory and a 512gb SSD, I was always a Windows guy till then and still am with my AMD self built desktop which is about 4.5 years old, and I have no intention of upgrading it for another couple of years because it's more than fast enough for anything I need to do with it, my M1 pro Mac I bought mid 2022 still beats the hell out of any of the Windows laptops I've used and the battery life is phenomenal in comparison with any Intel or AMD machines, I might upgrade when we get to the M7 Pro

Here in Germany where I am, computers tend to be more expensive than the U.S. I need to buy a new MacBook Pro. I´ve been comparing the prices, and a refurbished M1, 16GB RAM, 512 SSD costs around 1600-1700€. The M3 11 Core, 18GB RAM, 512 SSD is now on sale for 2149€. So, for the extra 400-500€ for the M3 I´d have a newer more powerful computer. On the other hand, with the 500€, I could almost buy a iPad Mini 6, or buy a new iPad Air with the M2 chip. It´s a tough decision. The M3 Pro costs 2499€ on the Apple website, but is currently 2149€ on Amazon. I do mixing and mastering for a living, and plan to get more into editing video.

I upgradede to the base m3 pro pro from an m2 air, but the main reason was the RAM. I had unfortunately gotten the air with 8gigs thinking it would be fine. it wasn't. Had I got for 16gb, I'd still be rocking the air.. If I hadn't found a killer deal on the m3, $1600.. I'd still be rocking the air. I'll admit there was a little bit of "ooh cool new color!" factor but I have genuinely benefitted from the 10gb ram boost. I totally admit that I didn't need any more processing power though, lol. but I do feel like this machine will carry me much farther down the line than than the ari would have.. but again, I also admit that it was a bit of a shiny cool gift for myself.

M1 Pro owner, I had M2 air 8GB Ram 512SSD it was great computer so I was gonna exchange and order upgrade 16GB RAM so I thought nan then I’m paying for new M3 MacBook Pros. I went to local computer store that sells only Macs. Trade it in I only pay $400 to get M1 Pro 14 inch MBP and I love it!!! Still performances excellent!!!

Appreciate the video but I had a bit of trouble following the maths - the numbers you stated seemed to be different to what the pictures showed, and I wasn’t sure why that was. Also, the benchmarking scores show around a 30% increase in single-core performance from the m1, but it seems closer to 40% for multi-core scores. According to your conclusion, do you mean that the single-core performance should get close to 50% for an upgrade to be considered?

I prefer to buy my tech slightly used toward the end of the product cycle. I got my 16 inch M1 Pro this way last year discounted by about 30 percent. That reduces cost of ownership significantly while still allowing me to buy newer tech that is up to date. I just can't deal with buying something and then seeing the value just tank right away.

@@patrickadrian5615 eBay. Recently I have seen nice 16 M1 Pro for 1300 and 16 m2 pro for 1650. I always just make sure it’s a seller who shows the actual images of the product, shows a minor cosmetic defect or two (demonstrates honesty), and has the battery cycles listed. The M1 Pro I bought had a picture with a scratch on the apple logo, showing me that that was probably it for any wear/damage. Sure enough, it was.

In my case i went form an order of m1 max to cancling and getting an m1 pro. Ive been holdign tight with the m1 pro but 16gb ram is a hinderance since i run virtual machines and simulators. I do think going from m1pro to m3max with 64gb ram will be a big jump but expensive.

The only groups who should upgrade their laptop in 2 years. A. They underbought. Easy to do as it’s hard to quantify what specific workflows actually need. I generally overbuy and keep the machine until I notice it’s a problem. B. Their role/use case changed. Life happens. C. They make a load of money doing what they do with the laptop. If I were in that group, I’d likely keep the 2 year old as a backup because downtime can’t be tolerated. D. They’re rich and buying things makes them happy. E. They’re not rich and make poor life choices. They do them. I can’t live their life for them.

I’m seeing 2,842 single core and 15,205 multi core on my M2 Max, and ~144,000 compute, in Geekbench. Still incredible performance. But I think I will sell it for basically full price, because it’s an upgraded model and its in perfect condition. Then I will buy M3 Max!

I have a 2014 iMac and it’s still working fine. That being said I’d like to upgrade but buy a refurbished MacBook Pro probably an M2 Pro chip model. It will be from the Apple Store and my question is, folks who have bought refurbished, do they last for a number of years or have you had problems? Many thanks and great video. :-)

Thank you for your note regarding gaming not being a reason to upgrade. As a M1 Pro owner, I was really on the fence whether or not I should upgrade to an M3 Pro for the sole purpose of enhanced gaming capabilities. What productivity gain is achieved with a performance gain of 15% in a certain aspect, i assume nothing. If a M2 Pro just think to take the 1 TB version to get two NAND Chips. I think even getting a refurbished M1 Pro or M2 Pro will be economical a better choice. Perhaps if you have a M1 Pro a M6 Pro will have a big enough performance advantage to justify the upgrade. If you encounter today your RAM is to small or you have to get a cpu one or two tier higher its another talk. But just because of space black its not a good argumentation.

In my opinion there are 2 ways to with apple nowadays. Either you buy yourself a 32gb and 1tb model and keep it up +1 year after apple stops system-software upgrades, or purchase a base model (depending on one’s needs)and after 2.5-3 years sell it to finance the new one (base model)

Live and studio engineer here, just got a refurbished M1 Pro 10 core with 16 gigs ram. A 15 track Pro Tools sessions with a few reverbs takes up only 1~2% of cpu resources. 10 virtual instruments hits my ram at 50%. This machine has 8 performance cores vs 5 or 6 in the M3 pro - most audio production software doesn’t utilize efficiency cores. Plugins and software eat up CPU whereas virtual instruments eat up RAM. Can’t say anything about video but I’m super happy with my decision. Hope this helps focus your spec needs!

Good question! I think it’s apple way of really showing that M3 Max is really a tier up over the PRO series this time. Like what they did with iPhone by putting last years ‘A’ chip in the normal phones and not the iPhone Pro models. There has to be a year when they make the change. Do I agree they have done this… no! They should have done this from the start with the M1 Pro and M1 Max but if they change their minds, unfortunately one chip series has to be the unlucky one….

I did the same thing last year MBP 15” 2015 to MBP 14” M1 refurbished. It was a difficult move in some ways; the screen size and my old friend, but I've come around to all the advantages which motivated the switch. The modern ports, the super beautiful display, the smaller form factor makes it a real portable, the it handles anything I throw at it much more cool and quiet.

Very interesting comparison. Now (18 november) the Black Week magic har the 16in. M1 Pro at 17.490 NOK (Norway) (RAM 16 G) and the 16 in. M3 Pro (18G RAM) at 36.190 NOK. Both at SSD 512G. My use is some advance photo editing + normal office use and I come from a 2015 macbook Air 8G RAM. I favour the M1 and save some money

I code every day. A lot and like most programmers, many tabs open, terminals, docker instances, etc. I am very disappointed in the M3 Pro. Originally bought a MBP M2 Pro due to chip architecture being superior with the entry model, but had to return due to sound issues and there were none left to exchange. My M1 Mac Mini I bought for $799 is outperforming my MBP M3 Pro ($1999). MBP M3 Pro is running the same code bases and has even less open and still does not perform as well. That modification of memory bandwidth is a real bottleneck for my workload.

Hi. I have a choice between 14" m1 max 64ram/2tb or 16" m1 max 32ram/1tb(they are both at the same price). I've got m1 14" 16ram/512gb on which i am using Mainstqge3 . It looks like 16ram is not enough for me. It is 5gb project (with many vsts n plugins), and was wondering ,if 64ram will make that much of a difference over the 32ram? Cheers

I just purchased mid 2015, 15 inch Retina MBP earlier this year. I did that on purpose since I value repairability above anything else. When Apple comes to their senses and start making laptops with user-upgradeable storage, then and only then I will entertain buying a new laptop from them😂. I have strong disdain spending that much on unserviceable products.

I have the M1 Pro. No way I'm getting the M3 Pro. Its such a small increase in gains. It won't make my video work any better or get school work done any better either. I can wait a few extra minutes for videos to export. What I would do is, switch from premeire pro to final cut pro, then, the 4K60 playback lag issue is gone. I like using premeire pro because I have better control with where to lay out the videos that I work with. If anything, since I'm a premiere pro user, I'd get the M3 Max chip instead, these problems are totally gone, again, I don't want to spend $4000 for a brand new system. Instead of spending $4000, I can just render out the timeline in premiere pro to basically make proxies to get rid of the lag, which no one wants to wait around doing.

1st of all - M3Pro in low power mode for basic things will work up Twice as M1 pro (6cores vs 2 )( max tech series as reference at youtube) , second - diff if we compare base 8 core M1 pro to 12 unbinned version of M3 Pro exactly 50% in graphics and CPU, check real games and apps even if not optimized for new features in M3 pro, juts pure power, others reviews there

Low power mode on M1 Pro was still plenty fast (12200 vs. 10400 in Geekbench 6), but the real caveat was the refresh rate reduction to 60 Hz. Is this fixed (or optional) as well?

I like looking at all these comparison videos on my HP laptop i5 8th gen processor from 2017 ( just snuck into Windows11) which does everything I need as fast as I need it, to be fair I would still be using my i3 Toshiba from 2008 if it hadn't died from fan failure (now resurrected by youtubing a tear down and rebuild of cooling system on the HP). Eventually I will replace the HP but no way I'm spending £2000+ on an overpriced Apple product that is waaaaayyyyyy more than I will ever need performance wise.

Upgrade every 2 years? I don't have the budget to do that. Right now I'm upgrading because my M1 Air is (a lot) faster than my Intel iMac, so I'm looking to replace the desktop with an M2 or M3 based laptop or maybe an iMac. I need performance for my work, programming & investing. I budget for my laptops to last 3-5 years & desktop to last 7-10 years.
