On a remote stretch of the Keweenaw Peninsula, in the upper peninsula of Michigan, stands the remains of a lighthouse that provided a speck of light for the long dark stretch of shoreline. The 14 Mile Point Lighthouse is remote. Thirteen miles north of Ontonagon and miles from any public road. The roads leading to the lighthouse have long over grown.
Join Danny and I as we leave Misery Bay on Thor for a boat trip to the long abandoned lighthouse. Learn a little about its history, the fire and its unique features.

Misery Bay is the name of a novel by Steve Hamilton. Nice to see it come to life here.

I was up at the lighthouse 2 weeks ago! I love old brick houses because my family is brick masons. If I were a rich man I’d buy it and bring it back to life. Sad I’ll never own it but man what a beautiful place.

Hi @Watusifarm, thinking of taking a detour to check out this lighthouse during a trip to Copper Harbor. Do you know of any 4X4 trails leading to this structure? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

@@sonder3150 the only way to get on a trail to it that I know of is from lakeshore dr out of Ontonagon. I haven’t done it by trail just by water. But you should record your adventure😊. Good luck!

Wow that's like a Richardsonian Romanesque lighthouse. I might go there. I try to take kids some where every time we go up to camp. I need to buy a lottery ticket.

Great vid. Grew up in the northwoods, exploring the UP. 1986, hike out there with some pals, only to find the burn out shell.

Beautiful old lighthouse! Wish they would price it lower in order for it to maybe be restored someday. Such an important piece of history right here!

Pathfinder, you definitely live up to that name! My first thought when you put the map up of it's location "Whoa, that's up there." Thank you for sharing and learning us!!!! (I meant to say it that way!)

I just moved to Detroit (from Seattle!) and when I saw the title of this video I got excited... there's an old lighthouse near the city?! Cuz 14 Mile, gotta be near 8 Mile right? I saw that movie, it's not far away... Haha, I'll get my bearings here eventually! Great video guys, I'd love to go check that place out myself...but it'll probably have to wait til NEXT summer

Yeah - they named everything when it was a wilderness and the only people around were surveyors. So, lots of "Mile Names" here. Welcome to Michigan (and Detroit - most think of those two things separately). Quite a change from Seattle, but there are cool things to do. I checked out your channel, lots of exploring there. Subbed. See you around!

As I recall my cousin Don Hermanson (1941-2020) and friends together owned the lighthouse at or about 1990's. Not sure they are in anyway connected at this date. There were some plans to resurrect it.

Sad To See The Damage Done To Something That Should Be Part Of Historical Michigan Treasures! Did They Ever Find And Hold The Campers Who Burnt It Down To Account?! The Old Photos Show A Truly Grand Lighthouse. You Know Would It Be Too Crazy To Think The State Of Michigan Should Start A Lighthouse And Historic Building Fund To Identify All These Old Structures And Renovate Them. Heck, Make Them All Suitable For Tourist Traps. Oh Well, Wouldn't It Be Nice .....

The good news is that a private owner has purchased the property and structures and plans a restoration. I believe the campers were fined and charged back in the 80s, but not sure.
