I can see why Harry thinks his wife is just like his mother. Not the public Diana, but the temper tantrum, insane, plate throwing, mean, miserable, press calling, scheming, narcissistic, private Diana. That Diana is an absolute twin of Meaghan.

@@louise7552 it definitely doesn’t sit right, but she was being honest about the lengths she had to go to to get help when she was suffering. I don’t think it means she doesn’t love William or Harry. I think apparently she thought babies could withstand quite a lot. Thank God she was right in this case. I have no idea but I assume it was a passion kind of spur of the moment stupid decision. But she was barely 2021 Tops. And This was her first serious boyfriend I believe. Not to mention the whole country was counting on them succeeding. It’s a lot of pressure and she just wanted some attention. And actual love. Her birth family hardly was at her side all the time. Very sad. I don’t think about any of that when I remember her. I remember all the good she did. And the smile she brought to peoples faces. Whether it was in person or from newsstands.

This was such an interesting book. I can remember back when Charles & Diana were married, thinking that Charles was not much of a smiler and seemed rather staid, and how difficult that must be to live with if you were young and lively like Diana. That means not keeping the children from each other, not trash-talking of the mum or dad and actually being positive of the partner so the children can feel secure. And NEVER lean on your child for emotional support. What about the child’s fragile emotions during this time?

Yes. Lashing out at Charles was bad enough, but to favour the golden child, and neglect Harry is despicable and damaging for BOTH children. It set up a difficult relationship between them. And to think in an interview Diana bemoaned the fact Harry was always second. She said she had to go speak to the Queen Mother because she so obviously favoured William and ignored Harry. Yet she was doing that herself consistently! I always thought there must be so much there to make Harry so relentlessly angry and feeling justified in wounding his family.

Oh yeah, sure, King Charles is a saint! This is the same man that made the statement to the reporter, “whatever love means “. What a cold and callous comment prior to marrying the beautiful 18/19 year-old Diana. I wonder just how you would behaved if you thought you married a man who truly loved you and whom you looked up to… Think back to when you were 18 or 19 years old. Charles was a 30 year old man and if he did not truly love Diana, he should’ve never asked her to marry him and he should’ve waited for his true love Camilla. They all used Diana and when she woke up and figured that out it was too late…. kudos to Diana for using the media to her advantage and getting out of a miserable marriage Too bad she died Young! Imagine William and Harry, watching their father Marry his mistress And ascend to the throne! imagine if this was allowed when Edward married Wallace Simpson! We would never have had a Queen Elizabeth! It’s well and good that Charles was allowed to marry Camilla, but he should have forfeited the crown, and William should’ve ascended to the throne with Catherine… Sorry, I’m just tired of everyone making King Charles sound like a saint… I wish him health, but I can’t respect a man that marries one woman and still carries on with another . also, didn’t we watch him have a fit about someone coming and moving pens out of his way… Like he does not have two hands and could move them himself. I don’t believe we’ve ever witnessed Diana acting so privileged. That is why they called her the queen of hearts, she truly loved people and tried to bring to light community/world problems that needed to be resolved.

You know, after hearing everything in this book and also Lady C’s, I cannot help but wonder how empathetic and compassionate she really was. If she did in fact have BPD (or a similar diagnosis), was her empathy simply a show for the world to garner as much love and attention for herself as she (and her illness) needed? Don’t know, but she doesn’t strike me as trully compassionate, otherwise I think she would have offered an apology to the staff here and there as well for her behaviour. I could be wrong, of course, it’s just that all her displays of empathy and compassion seemed to be reserved for the public eye, whereas in private not much could be found.

I truly feel sorry for Charles..he is weathering the same storm. Harry is damaged, Diana was damaged. I don't believe Diana ever, ever loved Charles. She tormented him because he didn't "love" HER. She just wanted him to be miserable, wanted to be the victim, wanted the attention her victimhood brought her..she and Meghan, 2.0. Diana used her outward beauty to fool people. She was a very sick person, hid it well from the public. Meghan..the same, just not as cleaver. My sympathies to the royal family.

I’m not surprised Harry is jealous of William. His mother pushed him aside so many times. I’m sure he was difficult as a child but he is a victim of nature & nurture. She was a manipulator & carried out parental alienation, so wrong. The help Harry received should’ve involved family counselling. Add in drug abuse & his attraction to another manipulator, it is a recipe for a perfect storm. Harry’s most stable time in his life was thanks to the help & support from William & Catherine & look what he has done to them. This is not going to have a good ending for Harry

I remember Diana in an interview talking about going to the Queen and asking her repeatedly for help and how they did nothing. That was one of her big points. But now, I wonder if she was this huge borderline personality mess who created chaos everywhere she went. The royal family couldn't do anything. You can't force a borderline to get treatment. They're utterly convinced that everyone else is the problem. Meghan is a narcissist. A different angle of the same problem. Both overwhelmed with their own needs, finding a plot in every situation and withholding love as a weapon. No wonder Harry picked what he was used to. We repeat patterns.

Hi Shauna ~ You’ve no idea how much I’m enjoying, “The Housekeeper’s Diary.” THANK YOU!! Awhile ago, maybe over a year? I watched a doc about the gardens at Highgrove. First, I know Charles bought the property because there wasn’t any sort of garden. He created it. In the Doc, he escorted the interviewer thru all the “gardens.” It’s got the most lovely spaces I’ve seen. Charles landscaped the entire thing. I wouldn’t call it a garden, it’s a landscaped masterpiece. That program changed my entire opinion of Charles. I still remember some of the spaces he created. It’s like a piece of heaven. Every time Wendy mentions, “the garden” my mind goes back to that program. Thanks again for a delightful start to my Saturday!

This is making me wonder if the “smaller sausage” whinging in Whaaa isn’t a euphemism or stand in for “Willy got to eat with Mummy on the bed on tea trays and watch tele?” He can’t criticize Saint Diana - in his mind - so he tries to come up with some other way to express his jealousy of William and he ends up with the inane sausage and tiny bedroom at Sandringham story. I could see this as a way to protect - in his own damaged mind and to the wider public - Diana’s memory. This book and Lady C’s really make me respect the careful way William went about making sure Catherine understood - as best she could - what she was getting herself into. Also, his desire for as normal and quiet of a family life for his children, and why he’s so stuck to his guns about it, and even why Charles fully supports these decisions of his, as well.

Sorry, stop painting Charles as a saint! He’s the one that decided to marry an 18/19 year old who had nothing but admiration for him And decided to carry-on with Camilla after the wedding, during her honeymoon, etc. how quickly people forget about Prince Charles‘s comment to a reporter when asked that they were in love. Diana sweetly, and Shirley said, of course… However, Charles comment was, Whatever love means! I remember my mom and I watching that on the television and thinking, oh my God, poor Diana… What a cold, and detached answer that was for the gorgeous woman that he was about to marry. For all we know, this person, memoir of what happened behind-the-scenes with Charles and Diana could be made up nonsense, and Charles could’ve paid her handsome way to write such a document to save his reputation. But you can’t fake that response of, “whatever love means“ he ruined Diana‘s life and subsequently both William and Harry who continue to deal with the fallout of their parents, divorce and the loss of their mother.

In the film "The Queen", there's a scene where the Royals are watching tv and seeing the massive outpouring of public grief, as well as the public's impatience (at the time) for the Royals to make an appearance and show respect for Diana. I don't remember which character said it, but as one remarked on not being able to understand the public outpouring of grief, one of them said, "They saw a different Diana to the one we saw." I may not have the quote exactly right, but I always remember it as an idea. For Charles and most of the family, Diana was a very different person to "the People's Princess". I also remember when the outpouring of grief was still raging, Mother Teresa died, and the announcement of her death was a five minute interruption of the (by then) frankly repetitive droning on about Diana, showing the floral tributes and teddy bears and clips of Diana's charity work and even of Diana with Dodi al Fayed. Diana was revered as a saint to the point that a woman who became a Catholic saint couldn't be acknowledged for more than a few minutes.

At the time I remember thinking the grief was way too OTT, like people were wailing in the streets, for goodness sake, for a woman they never met. They honestly thought their grief was more important than Diana’s own children, to the point where they demanded the royals be put on display to partake in the circus. It was absolutely bonkers and I genuinely thought it was disgusting that they demanded that the Queen and the boys had to be trotted out for their benefit. And I remember thinking that Charles was brave AF for walking in the cortege considering how much people blamed him for the breakup of the marriage. He did it out of respect for his boys’ mother but considering how she treated him, he owed her nothing. And yah , I remember thinking it was disgusting that Mother Teresa was basically ignored by the public because I guess she was old and unattractive, even though she was a far more worthy and charitable woman. Yes, it’s sad when someone dies young and in a tragic accident, but it taught me that beauty and fame are more prized in this world than a person’s true, kind character.

I am on chapter 7 and it's been VERY interesting overall but especially to know there was a side of Diana, kept very hidden. I still feel deep down she was genuinely kind and compassionate but she had another side and seemed quite the handful. Despite her being a lady and all - she and Charles had nothing in common. It's sad isn't it? He married her because he was pressured. He seemed to genuinely like her and maybe even loved her, but was not in love with her. She was so young, naive and loved him and was too far in, to get out even though deep down she knew there was a cloud. Like her sister told her - 'your face is printed on the tea towels'. Very sad for everyone involved but it still doesn't give Harry the right to do, what he has done, to his family.

Even as a young woman, I never believed the public persona of Diana. I always thought she married a prince, not the man, and I felt that Charles had deserved to have someone who loved him, for who he was. I am so glad he eventually did. Camilla would have been happy to have no title, but Charles wanted the loyal woman he loved sitting with him. I get Diana was young and immature when they married, but sadly, it seemed she never matured. Her death was tragic, yes, but I hold that blame purely at that incredibly drunk driver and no seatbelt. She did survive the crash, but died after a small tear in a crucial artery leaked. Tragic for sure. Poor Harry and William were used to maniuplate Charles and boost her own ego. This is terribly sad. But we never took this personally, we understood the responsibility they held, the pressure they were under and generally they'd shame-facedly mutter some sort of apology in time. As someone who's only a couple of years younger than Diana, I was always sympathetic to her plight back as a young 20-something. I thought she had a cheating husband whose family stood behind him to make her life even more miserable than it was. As I'm much older now, I can see there are two sides to every story and can see the manipulative, petty side to Diana and have more sympathy for Charles than I ever thought I would. In fact, he's starting to win me over and I do like Camilla too. Those two are very compatible. If Diana were still alive, I'm afraid she'd still be alone. I will say Charles gets points for apologizing to his staff for his tantrum, lol. It makes it much more bearable to deal with that behavior when someone takes responsibility for it and you can all move on. I guess Diana, much like her younger son, believes everything wrong in her life is because of someone else.

She was never shy....never. she also wasnt a virgin on her marriage. She had at least 3 boyfriends prior to Charles...when one broke up with her, she smeared his new car in flour and water paste, which hardened overnight and ruined the paint work. She was malicious and vengeful and the press were complicit...she sold their rags, and knew it. Meghan is very much Diana Mach 2.

After watching the video 'Fire and Ice' about Sarah, listening to each chapter of The Housekeeper's Diary plus reading so many books on Diana.....I've been thinking about the 5 women who married into the Royal Family. Diana, Sarah, Meghan from broken homes. Sophie and Catherine from close Families, intact homes. Were the first 3 women looking for their 'Prince' to 'save' them, improve their status, fill them up with what they lost/felt missing in their lives??? Sophie & Catherine took their time before marrying, married for love and looked at their future lives as 'part' of the 'Royal bubble' but concentrated on life with their husband and future children?? Makes me wonder....

I remember being absolutely appalled when i read about lady fermoy going against her own daughter in her custody case & then you see her siding with charles over diana in this situation. But maybe lady fermoy was actually putting the children first both times? Maybe she was trying to shield them from "unhinged" mothers? Diana comes across as a spoilt hysterical nightmare. Charles nearly always looked sad with her yet with camilla hes always laughing. Its a shame they were not allowed be together years ago. He could have had a happy life.

Ive come to realize that Diana was never in love with Charles as a person only at his being a prince. If she loved him she would have noticed that he didnt appreciate all the attention like she did and appeared uncomfortable in public which really made her personality shine more. But instead of pulling him into her shine she started competing. Just think if when someone handed her flowers she remarked " Charles grows the most beautiful flowers in his garden" and then calling him over to tell him in front of the crowd " I told these people about your garden and how you grew flowers as pretty as these". But she was too immature to be in a reciprocal marriage and loved all the attention on her. If she had been more mature they might still be married, maybe not as great loves but as loving companions

I agree, a good, healthy, and strong relationship can be built even if there is no infatuation (i.e., being in love) there at the beginning. That never lasts anyway, but people can love and appreciate each other in more than just a romanic way.

It would've been lovely when a more outgoing person do that to their more reserved partner. I don't know if the birthday surprise depicted in The Crown was factual, if it was that again shows Diana loved attention on her rather than giving her attention to the ones she supposedly love.

I am sorry, but had Diana been one of the Plebs, the way she was bringing up those boys was tantamount to abuse to the same extent that Queen Victoria abused her children. Whilst she may not of hit or shouted at them by, almost making them choose sides she was alienating them from Charles. Also you don't show your distress to a vulnerable whist using the other child as an emotional crutch. I never liked her from day one, I thought she was sly and deceitful, in fact an early version of the mattress actress. She was also too dim to see when she was being used, as in the Bashir interview and because of him she refused Royal protection and probably died because of it.

What you say is true of course. But Diana herself as a child witnessed her father's abuse of her mother, and with her siblings was used by their father as a weapon of punishment against their mother, who was denied custody and publicly vilified and shamed in the divorce. So she herself was damaged very badly by her childhood experience and inevitably repeated it with her own children. It's a classic pattern.

It is clear that William served as a confidante for his mother from a very early age, while Harry being 2 years younger was sent off to the nursery and kept out of the loop. Knowing his mother better than Harry ever would, it must be really painful for William, to stand by silently and watch Harry exploit Diana's memory, garnishing the world's sympathy for himself, as this little boy who lost his mother so tragically. While there is no doubt the loss for Harry was real, one cant help but feel the loss for William, with whom his mother felt a deep connection, would have been far more deeply felt.

I Remember reading in Paul Burrell’s book about how Dianna held a grudge against his wife .His wife worked as the person in charge of Diana’ clothes. She had to keep track of her gowns making sure they were cleaned and organized with tags showing when and where they were worn ,with what accessories and who attended the event . The Burrells lived on the grounds of the main house and Dianna would often pop over for coffee at their house. They 23:27 had 2 boys a year or two younger than Will and Harry and often had play dates .Paul’s wife decided to quit the job due to feeling overwhelmed with home and work. Dianna felt betrayed and stopped speaking to her .The sons were invited up for a play date and one son said to Dianna ‘mummy would like to come too’ ,Dianna started talking to her again. I think both Dianna and Charles had mental health difficulties that came to the surface under the pressure of a royal marriage.

Thanks Wendy, an entertaining and fun review. According to diarist James Lees-Milne, close friend of the Mitford family, Deborah Mitford (late Duchess of Devonshire, who entertained them as a couple, and Prince Charles singly) said of Princess Diana: she was 'shallow and devious, as cunning as a fox, motivated by malice and spite, never read a book, totally uneducated and stupid'. And he said of Prince Charles that he was 'an idealistic man, struggling to get words out, writhing with intellectual deficiency, wrinkling his forehead and making grimaces, not equipped to wrestle with clever minds'. A less compatible pair it would be difficult to imagine.

In the real Diana by lady C it documented the revengeful acts she would take out on people who had offended. One even had his car trashed. She was an unregulated person. Really loved this chapter. Isn’t it interesting that many of these stories of Diana would probably have been put to rest if not for Harry & Meghan. I was one of those people who knew Diana wasn’t a saint but was willing to allow her good work to be her legacy & rest with her. With Harry bringing everything back up, it’s allowed ppl to re scrutinise Diana with fresh eyes, & remember or learn her for who she really was. I’m guessing this is why meg thinks she is Diana 2.0 or why Harry believes she is like his mother because his mother always pitted herself against the family on her emotional whims.

I totally agree with you. Whenever Diana was mentioned before, it was about her legacy and her beautiful clothes. Since Harry married Meghan, all Diana's faults have come out and now the bad bits have overshadowed and true or not, William has to hear it too and relive those awful times. Harry has painted a very bad picture of his mother which her grandchildren will have to go through later.

My goodness..... what wonderful fodder for the Markles. Perhaps one day Harry will realise that life doesn't always go the way we plan and that is life. The world only saw it all through Diana's eyes and never saw it through Charles eyes. Charles was forced to marry Diana and she was too young for him. He married her because she was a Virginia and no-one could ever say they slept with the Queen... at the time. It was a tragedy from day one sadly. Now Harry chooses a woman whom did her homework on his mother and the die was cast. He let his other brain take over and the rest us history. The victims being his children.

It seems that many commenters here champion Diana in terms of the plot, the events, as reasons for her terrible choices. Others, like me, who have first hand experienced borderline personality types in their family know there are no circumstances that will help or appease these people. They have a storm raging in their psyches. Thanks for reading this book, Shauna. We really need a lot more focus on these mental health challenges because they do leave a trail of destruction in their wake. Thankfully, BPD sufferers can now be alleviated with special therapy. Of course, this was not known even thirty years ago and we can see in this memoir how everyone struggled to understand Diana’s actions and mood swings. It is a living hell for everyone involved.

I wonder if Harry has read this book cos he has certainly put his mother on a very high pedestal . Also he new how much this book hurt everyone especially William and whether you are team Charles or Diana i think this was one of her biggest mistakes and after Martin Bashir interview that was it, they were ordered to divorce, Harry never had the conversations with her that William did cos he was always in the nursery. Paul Burrell was always for Diana but again her wrote a book , even though it was seen through rose tinted glasses

I don’t think Diana would have ever been happy if she had lived. I have read several books on her and come to the conclusion that her perfect man didn’t exist. To be unfaithful to someone who you are being unfaithful with is a whole different level. Did she not think for a moment that as one of the most famous woman in the world, mother to two most famous boys in the world that her actions would hurt them more than it would hurt Charles.

As a girl in America growing up a few years behind Diana-I fell fully for the one sided propaganda of poor Diana and horrible Charles. Only in recent years have learned more. Such a shame. I now am seeing that Diana with her manipulations and attitude behind the doors and using the children as pawns see that maybe “that one’s wife” (mm) is a bit like Diana with one major exception being that Diana DID have real empathy (something that mm seems to fake). I think this also shows how finding the right partner in life is important. Bc Charles with Diana was lonely and frustrated and yet in everything for Charles (good and bad) Camilla seems to be the right fit. She encourages and supports him in the best ways and I believe that is what the Queen witnessed as well as William. I would say, taking a look at h and where is is now-he chose poorly. He has never been more angry it seems. Sad but he is an adult and responsible for his own choices and the fact that he seems to refuse to see the truth and blames everyone to fit his narrative. A lesson for all of us.

I used to listen to Dickie Arbiter on LBC Radio, a news station in London in the early 80s before he worked for the Palace. Diana had a vindictive nature and did the same betrayal a couple of years later with Panorama (though we now know she herself was manipulated by Bashir). Yet again Paul Burrell claims she didn't want a divorce when the Queen wrote to her ordering a formal separation. There's a sense of not realising actions and words in public have consequences, rather like Harry.
