Hi Alex, I did my training with Jacob and Kyle, and we also go to the same unit. Currently, the training last 2 weekends, 9am - 5pm Saturday and Sunday, and then involves a assessment for role (AFR). You do online tests for Drugs & Alcohol, Medicine & Policies and Level 1 Safeguarding, but it can be sat in the AFR. You can also get some quick practice, and then have to do your assessment, which is just a scenario involving a patient showing symptoms which you must assess, and decide the correct treatment. Throughout the training days you learn a variety of techniques and information such as hand washing, infection prevention, protective equipment and bandaging, cpr, defibrillation and recovery positions. The unit meetings are brilliant, everyone is so laid back and the majority have the intent to go into medical studies at university or are in medical careers. Don't worry about your training and the AFR, as you will be expected to be nervous, make mistakes and lack the confidence, as they are all characteristics you build upon. When you're in the scenario, and in real life situations, your training comes flooding back to you and you do what you think is right. All the best and good luck!

thanks very much Joe for the detailed response, I have good knowledge of first aid I have already dealt with a RTA and I’m fully comfortable in a situation like that I shouldn’t think I would be nervous but after more training I feel my confidence will grow even more so, am I right that (AFR) stands for Advanced First Aider if so can you get to this position straight away or is it a case of when you can complete the tests?

Alex Stevens to become an advanced first aider you need to first become a trainer first aider with the company, go to a couple events as a first aider, I’m quite sure you need a certain amount of hours but not to sure what the amount is - to go into the AFA training. It’s al completely doable and very worthwhile, 100% recommend and you won’t regret it. Which area are you from?
