The Messenger (S) gave the responsibility of digging 40 arm’s length of the ditch to every 10 men. He decided that the ditch would be on the north of Madina, which is surrounded by gardens. This would make it more difficult for anyone to raid. The Messenger (S) kept encouraging them and helping them in their work of moving the earth on their shoulders.
