15. Alfa Romeo 159ti Sport Wagon Review and Test Drive mildly modified daily driver

In this video we take a look at the 2010 Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon that I've purchased as part of the Jimbo's Driveway fleet. Primarily the daily driver for Mrs Jimbo, we muse over the aesthetics of this handsome car, as well as how well it's stood the test of time and what the future holds. Is purchasing a 10 year old Alfa with nearly 100,000 miles, as the new family car and daily driver, a stroke of genius or a recipe for financial catastrophe!

Alfa 159 does not compete with the E class and 5 series, but C class, 3 series, and A4. With that being said it drives better than any of those cars. It is not a track day car and with the FWD configuration the driving style should be with that in mind, however the fast and precise steering and the amount of mechanical grip together with its neutral handling on the edge makes it a true sports sedan, which can be said only for the watered down E90 while other cars mentioned earlier are just luxury sedans that feel much more disconnected and bland. As for the "high" mileage, I often see examples with 400k and 500k kilometres on the clock and still going strong. Alfa 159 is made so well it is hard to find a bad onev they won't start, especially JTDm ones. My 159 was 8 years in the family and we traveled all across Europe and a good part of Asia, such a great and underestimated driver's car.

amen brother.. i still think to this day... 17 years after its introduction... that the 159 is such an under appreciated car... Yeah maybe the motorisation of the car outside of diesles and the 1.8Tbi engine was poor.. but everything else is top notch with the competition of those days... mine is going into its 13th year and it's a car that makes me not think about other cars... i just don't miss anything else while driving this beauty... ok maybe Giulia is a bit busting my balls but that's it😂

I had the good fortune to buy a Rosso red 2010 2.0 jtdm ti sw three and a half years ago. Currently has nearly 119,000 miles on the clock, but there is not a rattle or squeak anywhere. Drives like a dream and I wouldn't part with it.

The squeaks are mostly caused by stock or bad aftermarket bushes on the fronts. If your gonna replace them, make sure you get Powerflex Bushes and make sure they are oiled, otherwise you'll make them squeaky too :)

You want the 2.0 Jtdm Jimbo . Much better engine . Cake the underside of it with lanogaurd or similar . Service every year and you'll have many years of happy driving . Gorgeous , gorgeous car . Hope you are waving at fellow alfisti !

Does the 2.0 jtdm have the dodgy gearbox he mentions ?….

@@gavinwilson4550 not sure what you are refering to, but the answer is no. The 2.0 comes with a 6 speed manual only, it is marked as F40, and it is the best one as far as I can tell... EDIT: he is refering to the M32, it supposedly can be problematic regarding the bearings...but preventable by adding a bit more oil than prescribed and changing it often. There's another newer manual C635, I think used in last years of production, don't know much about that one...so 3 in total, not only one dodgy as he stated. if u plan on buying a 159 I would def. go with a manual, also personal preference...

The 1.9 JTDMs came with the absolutely dreadful GM M32 gearbox (fitted to millions of Astras and Vectras) that is made of chocolate and has a huge main bearing failure rate. The later 2.0 JTDM (which I'm happy to own in my 159) have the F40 gearbox in, which is stiffer to operate but carved from granite and very reliable.

Sin embargo los 2.0 jtd tienen un problema en el retén de la bomba de aceite y ha supuesto la rotura de muchos motores por falta de lubricación. La caja m32 con modificacion en los cojinetes no debería volver a fallar.

Car looks amazing, I didn't realise you had that squeak, my brera did exactly the same thing!! Also had a squeak from the clutch, couldn't do anything about it, drove it for 3 years no issue 👍

I have the same car. 125k drives like a dream and is my car of choice over my BMW 640d. I've had it chipped to 200 bhp and put Voloce alloys on it and it handles like a dream on its bigger tyres. You have to drive it and it gives you loads of feedback. I've been lucky enough to have spent my life in big limo type cars but this is the one that is my go to drive. Oh and the looks

Good stuff this. Looking to replace my ( really good) E350 Diesel Estate with a slihgtly more engaging small estate and a Petrol Ti 159 is looking like top choice.

Nice to hear you never mentioned the reliability that most who have never owned or been near 1.think they have the right to slate alfa I own a 159 ti as my every day car and my pride and joy a giulia quadrifoglio in trofo white .I've owned 14 alfas 32 italian cars in my time .along with plenty of other makes I really dont know what all the hype is about german garbage. Alfa only for me from an alfisti.

Funny thing is that i have owned a v6 for 3 years, and it is super reliable, whereas on all my groups, seems like the 2.4 is always breaking...

If it's anything like my 156, the squeaks were from the upper wishbone bushes.

Your washes has some kind of flaw. They are normally quite good (I am on my third 159 now. And I haven't been in one with to bad washers as yours)

I have a 2.4ti 2008 & my rear spring collapse 😢 looking for a set for the rear but think the oem are abit pricey! Any one fitted the Eibachs? or have link to any alternative? Need car back up & running for winter. Please help. Great video & yes its, they are amazing looking cars still today. 👍

Funnily enough, the 159 was built on the GM/Fiat "premium platform" which was largely developed by... Saab.

How do you find this compared to the saab ? I had a 1.9 diesel 9-3, and looking at the 159 with the same engine. Something about the alfa that makes it more desirable, but I can imagine that the creature comforts of the Saab make it nicer to live with day to day.

I have owned 2 Saab 9-5's and I currently own a 2.0 jtdm 2010 ti sportwagon in Rosso red with black roofrails. I agree that Saabs are extremely comfortable and are real mile eaters. The 159 is a really good car - try to get the later 2.0 diesel, as it is a much better engine. As for creature comforts, the Alfa ti has all the toys.

As estate cars go, these are definitely one of the best looking on the road, still. As it happens the car will be looking for a new home soon - would you be interested?

@@JimbosDriveway I certainly would be, I’ve always loved an Alfa! My first was a 145 Cloverleaf but now with a young family these are perfect and so stunning
