If NFL referees were 100 percent correct every time, the history of pro football would look a lot different.
Make no mistake, the NFL officials have a hard-enough job, and they do it way better than 99 percent of us could. That said, it’s hard not to think how some NFL moments could’ve played out if officials didn’t commit such mind-numbing miscues that are still widely talked about today.
Here are the NFL’s 15 worst referee mistakes of all time.

They did send that NBA ref to prison for "Fixing Games". Why not have the Police/Sheriff/Law Enforcement at the various games, for reasons other than crowd control? Have the LEO talk to the refs/umpires BEFORE each game, inform the refs,"We'll be reviewing every call, after the game. If we notice any impropriety, i your crews officiating, we will charge you. arrest you, incarcerate you. Just a word of warning folks. Fixing sporting events is ILLEGAL. Now let's have a cleanly called, honestly officiated game." Of course if a DC, State politician lost a large sum of money due to a bad call, there'd be wall to wall, Congressional hearings. IMO. Have you ever noticed the "Spread" on football games, is almost perfect, every week? The upsets do come, but they're very few, in the total amount of games.

I feel like the Myles Jack call is an interesting one, because it's not just about a bad call but also some larger questions about how to handle situations like that. I feel like what it comes down to is, if there's two possible outcomes, one is reversible and the other isn't, and the referees are anything but certain of the call in the moment, they should ALWAYS err on the side of the reversible call, which in this case would be not blowing the play dead. I know that's not a perfect solution either because of the ambiguous replay rules (specifically that they favor the original call), but there's just such an imbalance of possible outomes in these kinds of cases that it feels like that needs to be taken into major consideration in making those calls.

Don’t forget that the referee can let the play go to its natural conclusion and then come back and say “the ruling on the field is that the player was down by contact” and THEN they can go to review. If review shows the players wasn’t down by contact they can then allow the entire touchdown run to be allowed since they never whistled the play dead on the field.

To make things worse Brees legacy was changed forever I truly believe if we didn’t get robbed we would’ve destroyed that Patriots team and than what would Brees legacy be with 2 SB victories over Peyton & Brady???? @Potato Joe they gave him the most awful rtp calls at the worst times in the game, and did it multiple times. The most egregious was against the Vikings, where he made a clean waist line tackle of Kirk Cousins that gave the Packers an interception that would’ve won the Packers the game. But no, they called roughing on him, the Vikings scored a touchdown, and the game ended in a tie (the Vikings choked on two separate field goal attempts). Then again, that whole second half was the Vikings getting saved by the refs, just not as obvious as that play.

The NOLA No Call is the worst. The game was OVER. That was the most obvious possible PI to call, there was no reason for a flag not to be thrown, its undebatable, he didnt even look at the ball. The Saints either run it down and kick a chip shot field goal, or run it down and score a TD, both scenarios, the Rams have 30 or less seconds left to drive down the field and tie it with Jared Goff as QB.

So, here’s the thing…it’s a good call, and that sucks. I’m a Packer fan, and I’m saying Dez caught the ball. Please keep that in mind. The way the rule of possession was written at the time, it was the correct application of the rule, making the catch not a catch. So what I’m saying is that common sense says that Dez caught the ball. The rule, at the time, said that it wasn’t a catch. Therefore, the rule legislated common sense out of the play, and that’s the ridiculous part.

How do you not mention any of the horrendous Ed Hocculi calls that went against San Diego? He made so many bad calls that the NFL wouldn't let him officiate a Chargers home game for multiple seasons after that for fear of his personal safety.

I'm surprised the Shaun King to Bert Emanuel pass wasn't mentioned. Emanuel had his hands under the ball, but part of the ball was touching the ground. According to the rules at the time, the refs correctly called the pass incomplete. This led the NFL to change the rule that offseason, saying that if the receiver has control of the ball the pass is complete, even if it touches the ground. This occurred in the 1999 NFC Championship Game.

I am of the opinion, NFL, NBA, MLB, are like Pro Wrestling, are Exhibitions, NOT, true competitions. The ONE difference being Pro Wrestling has BETTER officiating. If any one ever read the book, the NBA ref, who was incarcerated for "Fixing Games", you'll remember, he said, he wasn't the only ref involved. That the NBA Champion was predetermined, BEFORE the season started. I was a rabid sports fan until 1979, when I watched the Steelers/Oilers game mentioned in this video. The entire nation saw it was a TD. The longer I watched, after that, I noticed SO many bad calls in all pro sports, I gradually decided that the games, regardless of the sport (except Golf) were fixed. Don't get me going on the NCAA Basketball Tournament, or their Football "Play Off" (they could've invited the TOP 16 teams & had the entire thing over in a month. All the other NCAA Football Divisions have a Play Off system, why not their Top Division?) ANY time there is as much $$$ involved as there is now, corruption, cheating, fixed games, etc, are bound to happen.) I have watched 1 Super Bowl since the year the Saints won, that was when the NFL allowed the KC Chiefs to win.Haven't watched the World Series since 2005, haven't watched the NBA Playoffs or Championship , since the year both Boston (who I never liked) & OKC were both, obviously HOSED so Miami (read LeBron) CHeat, could win a Championship. I agree the Patriot dynasty was a complete set up, as well. I only watch highlights of the NFL,if I watch at all. Very sad, IMO.

The Chris Jones RTP call was terrible...... However, it should be noted that Edelman was clearly interfered with on the same play, roughly 15 yards down field. So proper officiating would have ended up with the same result.

Refs went on strike in 2012 and still haven't gone back to doing their jobs 10 years later... It's crazy, if you combine SpyGate, DeflateGate, the Tuck Rule, one or two bad calls in AFC Championship games, and that time the Seahawks threw the Super Bowl, you realize that Tom Brady didn't deserve like, 4 of his Super Bowl rings.

Yes, the Fail Mary was a very questionable and highly debatable bad call. What also needs to be evaluated were the calls/non calls in this game not just the game deciding TD/INT call. On the previous GB possession on a failed third down play, which would have ended in a punt, Kam Chancellor got flagged for pass interference. Watching the replay shows a well timed pass defense and clean contact where no flag should have been thrown. With a big penalty yardage gain and a new fresh set of downs GB scores the go ahead TD on the continuation of this drive. Although I agree that the Fail Mary is a bad call because Tate gets away with a clear pass interference and doesn't have simultaneous possession. Yes he grabs on to the ball before the defender landed and can confirm possession and a catch while Tate had both feet down but still a stretch calling it a TD and not a INT. However since GB was gifted a fresh set of bogus downs that gave them the go ahead points I see the Fail Mary call as poetic justice and righted a bad call that changed the game in favor of GB.

They called everything tight against the Seahawks and let the Steelers get away with a lot regarding the same type of call. This includes Offensive pass interference, Holding, and Low blocks. There were clear penalties the Steelers committed on their long touchdowns that were uncalled despite being more egregious compared to penalties called against the Hawks for the same thing. Ben threw a low block on the trick play WR TD pass and there was holding and two blocks in the back on the long 75 TD run.
