Today I have the privilege of sitting down with my Dad, Ivan Gergel, again. My dad was born and raised in London where he went to medical school and became a psychiatrist. He then joined the pharmaceutical company GSK in developing new antidepressant drugs, famously some of the SSRIs we all are of course aware of today. This job took him to the US where he started our family with my Mom. Dad was responsible for the running of hundreds of clinical trials, directed R&D for various pharmaceutical companies, and personally led the development and approval of 14 new therapies such as Lexapro, Paxil, and Namenda that have had fantastic impacts on patient’s lives. He currently is working in healthcare investing with new startup drug and device companies. Today, we will be discussing alternative careers in medicine, specifically because my Dad only practiced medicine for two years before switching over to Industry.

You hit the jackpot with the family that you were given. From someone who doesn’t have parents being there (don’t feel bad, my life is great) I often wonder what that must’ve felt like. You’re one lucky one :) cheers to Monday(and to our great lives), I’ll continue listening to this on my way to work.

As I work in Pharma. I am a medical doctor with surgical specialty. I can say only those who does not know their value or can not contribute to the team , the value of doctor decrease to zero ( except for impressing others colleagues) then it vanishes… stay close to practice, in pharmaceutical they use only your tittle to gain others trust …

Seems like taking care of people (and medicine for that matter) was not a big motivator. The main point of excitement came from the business/monetary aspect (basically only the self fulfilling aspect of things). It’s a bit disappointing to be quite honest. I mean someone has to get it done, I just don’t think pharmaceutical companies have patients in their mind when developing a drug. This episode was very informative and insightful, am grateful to have access to this conversation, I just wished (almost naively) that there would be a more altruistic motive for moving into the pharmaceutical world. The motives mentioned to do anything were almost entirely selfish and self serving. Even so, at the end of the day, I think that including a different perspective is needed for people interested in medicine to be exposed to.

Our goal is to find a job that hits the sweet spot between self-fulfilment and benefiting others. A win-win situation
