15 Best Third Person Shooters of This Generation You NEED To Play

The 8th console generation is almost at its end- at the very least, it's no longer the "current" console generation. And like many other genres, third person shooters have had a good last 6 or 7 years, having seen the releases of several great games that will be remembered as genre highlights for years to come. In this feature, we're going to tank what we feel are the fifteen best third person shooters of the PS4 and Xbox One era.
We do want to make one crucial note before we begin though- our primary consideration while formulating and ranking this list hasn't been to judge these games as complete experiences, but rather to focus primarily on their shooting mechanics, and their strengths as third person shooters. If you see games in this list that you think are ranked too low or too high (which will probably happen), keep that crucial factor in mind.

Vanquish Remastered. Best (arcade) third-person shooter I've played, even surpassing Gears of War and Uncharted 2 for me. And I personally loved the cheesy/hammy dialogue. P.S: MGSV has one of the most polished controls and gameplay mechanics within the third-person shooter genre. It's a shame that the rest of the game didn't live up to expectations.

I'd have to disagree max Payne 3 didn't update the gameplay to modern times so there was no real cover system.it was very dated and just f.y.i Max Payne is one of my favs and he is my all time favorite gaming character .if you think I'm just a hater

Sleeper pick could be Assassin’s creed Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla. Believe it or not but they can be played almost exclusively as an archery shooter game.

Evil Within 2, Days Gone definitely better than the most on this list, even Resi 3 is. U shoulda mentioned Lost Legacy as well when u were talkin bout 4. RDR 2 ain't the best in shooting but much better game than Fortnite or etc.

I respect your personal opinion but your CANNOT compare RDR 2 with Days Gone and Resident Evil 3. RDR 2 is a masterpiece not just in shooting but in story and graphics and Resident Evil 3 is mediocre title that no one will remember in 2 years time. This is not just my opinion but the opinion of many reviewers. And yes even though Fortnite is wildly successful it's just a fad and it's popularity is waning... it was marketed to 13 year olds and it made a ton of money but its not memorable in any way and in gaming if you dont create memorable experiences your players will get bored and go play something else eventually. Also, a big reason why these Battle Royal games got the attention they did is because big KZfaqrs and Twitch streamers played them at some point. PubG owes a huge amount of its success to PewDiePie, but there's only so many times you can watch someone win a battle royal match and go "yay I won" now lets do the exact same thing again.

I like how rdr2 movement & combat felt clunky or heavy. Wasn’t smooth but it’s a western, it shouldn’t be smooth , still my favorite game ever but I’ll admit gears 5 shooting & what not is great. I love rdr2 shooting & combat for what it is , an old western shooter

This is a list full of great games, for sure. But to me, gears 5 and uncharted really shouldn't be on the top. Maybe they should just break the top 5. But their gameplay is just so bog standard. There is nothing interesting in either game gameplay wise. Just get to cover, pop out and clicky to shoot and kill. Uncharted did try to add an extra dynamic with the grapple hook, but its usage is so circumstantial it's barely an addition. Imo they should be in the middle since they are both just normal tps games. Mgs5 meanwhile has so much more depth. I feel it should be higher. Control also deserved a somewhat higher spot. Last of us 2 is definitely worth an argument in that it didn't change THAT much from the first game either, but at least it has a very distinct identity. Gears and uncharted play the same as nearly every other tps game since 2006. Them adding in prone and improved AI does make last of us 2 feel more dynamic and interesting compared to gears or uncharted. So i suppose my personal list would be 1. MGS 5 2. Last of us 2 3. Control 4. Uncharted 4 5. Gears 5

To call Uncharted 4's grapple hook barely an addition is totally wrong. It's used often in platforming, in combat and even in the two best set pieces of the game (jeep and truck chase and tower escape). Last of Us 2's rope mechanic is something that's barely an addition because it's only used a handful of times in the whole game and can never be used in stealth/combat.

@@ashleythomas4112 There's a reason i never mentioned the grappling hook for last of us. And no, i don't think it is a big addition in uncharted 4. The very fact that you must grapple on to specific points already makes it a non mechanic and only a temporary gimmick for specific jumps. I couldn't disagree more. If the grappling hook had more dynamic usage whenever the player wanted, it could've been more intersting. But no such luck. Additionally, i am happy the rope isn't a bigger mechanic in last of us. You don't fight people with a grappling hook in a realistic combat environment. If ellie had been swinging around it, now that would've been plain bad design.

@@gtafan110010 There may only be specific points that you can use the rope but it's definitely more than just a gimmick as you can use it quite often in many different combat encounters, platforming and set pieces. The fact you can't use it in literally every single part of the game doesn't make it some temporary gimmick. It can be very useful in combat areas to make quick jumps or quick escapes. Last of Us may be more realistic than Uncharted but it would've been good see the rope mechanic properly implemented in Last of Us 2, certainly at the expense of realism which is nowhere near as important as interesting game mechanics. On the contrary I think it would've been better if Ellie could've used a rope to swing around certain large/vertical environments like large dilapidated houses and other tall multi level buildings. If the Last of Us 2 is eschewing more varied game mechanics (regardless of how often they're implemented) in favour of realism, I think that's bad design.

@@bigSwigsofGuinness You must have played in default sensitivity or never used the scopes. Fyi, there is only one sensitivity setting that controls all movement. ONE. Using scopes with high sens is almost impossible and extremely unenjoyable. It’s as if the devs were like… “oh, console version? What everrrr. F their thumbs and those console peasants. We’re not giving them no adjustments.” It’s just like the rest of the game…. No detail, no care, no passion. Who ever the devs were obviously didn’t know what the f they were doing.

Of all the uncharted games uncharted 4 has the most shooting encounters and they added more open area’s for exploration so it doesn’t feel like a corridor shooting gallery just like the previous uncharted games.

It was an inferior game compared to Uncharted 2 imo. Like you said, the game is 70% exploring/climbing due to the open levels and shootouts are much less present. The developers knew this was a problem, hence they added a mode (after beating the game) to only replay the action moments. Pacing of the game felt very slow, to the point that I was starting to lose interest due to boredom.

@@christopherboye5498 what do you mean shootouts are less present?halfway through the game all you do was shooting encounters.The game only slow at the beginning scotland and madagascar section but if you’re in libertalia island most of the game was gunplay encounters and action set pieces and even madagascar has big action car chase sequences.And the whole point of the game is to explore more than just a shooting gallery uncharted 2 and 3 all you do was shooting theres no sense of exploration because those games are fairly linear compared to uncharted 4.The game is an action adventure game so they emphasize more exploration thats why they give you more open areas like madagascar just to explore.Even unchared the lost legacy has open areas like hub world to explore and solving puzzles. Im not denying that uncharted 4 has pacing issue but they fixed the lacked of exploration in uncharted 2 and 3.

@@sakuragi1062 Exploration adds nothing from a gameplay perspective, so adding open sections just slow downs the pacing and hurts the game. You see Uncharted as an exploration game, but it's not. It's first and foremost a third-person shooter, with exploration being a theme rather than a mechanic. It's actually the opposite of what old tomb raider games were. And Uncharted 4 was pretty dry with combat sections compared to previous iterations, which made the overall pacing even more sluggish. Same problem Shadow of Tomb Raider had. Uncharted 2 was excellent and I replayed it over 6 times, while Uncharted 4 almost bored me to tears and I never want to play it again.

@@christopherboye5498 that's exactly what I meant. Games nowadays suffer from pacing problems. Even gears 4 and 5 have boring moments and those are supposed to be pure action games. Adding larger areas with lots of collectibles and enemies far between doesn't make a game better. In my opinion the best tps belong to the ps3/360 era. Uncharted 2, tomb raider 2013, gears 3, vanquish, binary domain, army of 2 the 40th day are unsurpassed in terms of fun. Even many other minor games like fuse, inversion were perfectly paced.

So..., this is a list for tps on consoles right? there are a ton more more games with better shooting in pc, and yeah feels better and different when not everything is aim-assisted. Pure aim-assisted console games should not be even considered in my opinion, they are all almost the same, no great feeling when a machine is aiming for you, in those games you are only in for the story, or other mechanics. BTW, where is splinter cell? conviction and blacklist were super good on shooting mechanics.

As someone who enjoyed both UC4 and Gears 5, Gears 5 is leagues ahead as far as a third person shooter goes (which makes sense given that UC4 is somewhat more of a narrative adventure experience). The firefights are more intense, the gunplay is superior and smoother, the enemy variation is more diverse and more. I just don’t see how you could put UC above Gears as a TPS but to each their own

Not really. The new consoles have only just come out. Most games are still being released for Xbox one and PS4 and will continue to do so and will be cross platform. @@solidkwon It's of course the most popular game to heavily lean into the game mechanic since those two first implemented it. Like those games cover shooting it's basically Gears core concept. Most other games like Uncharted have covers shooting but do not rely on it so in that sense it is uniquely Gears nowadays. I'm not trying to take anything away from that but I am trying to shed light on the games that influenced it. You don't have to hate or ignore the old to appreciate the new.

TLOU2 is a narrative action adventure game, not an actual shooter. Uncharted 4 is an exploration action adventure game with shooting mechanics, not an actual shooter. MGS V is a stealth game, but at least it feels more shooter than the 2 above. Gears 5 is the best 3rd person shooter this gen. Period.

U forgot to mention the 1st the last of us game ! Which idc how much better the mechanics of the last of us 2 are ! The story sucked so bad that I would play the 1st the last of us game 500 more times before ever touching the last of us 2 ever again! Not to mention the advertising for the last of us 2 led me to believe the game would be a certain way , n then it wasn't! I felt tricked into buying the last of us 2 and lied to , and let down over all with how it ended up being ! I would rather play metal gear survive 100 more times before touching the last of us 2 again ! I would rather play days gone 1000 more times! I would rather play state of decay 2 , 1000 more times! I would rather play the 1st the last of us game 1000 more times before touching the last of us 2 game ever again ! All because of the story ! Now that being said if Neil druckman could get his head out of his ass ! And actually pay attention to what fans like ! Then I would have to say maybe I would play another 1 of his games , cuz the handling, the gun play , the shoot and cover the stuff with the work bench , the world and graphics were all great ! So obviously they have the basics down on how to make a good feeling( with its mechanics) and a good looking game ! But they need to revamp their idea process! Or revamp what they think ppl like for a story ! Cuz the only way some1 can like the last of us 2 in my opinion! Is if the person playing is a miserable person! And they love watching a misery fest over and over ! Joel and ellie together could have taken the franchise a lot farther! And maybe after 4 games with them 2 as the main characters then maybe do 1 with Tommy and ellie or maybe the last 2 could have been about Tommy and ellie ! Idk ! All I know is that adding Abby into the game as a playable character after what she does to Joel! After naughty dog already got us to like Joel and ellie as the protagonist! Then make abby the antagonist by killing Joel! Making every person playing the game hate her character! Then halfway through the game force every1 to have no other choice but to play as her , and try to like her and try to understand her ! But that is where they went wrong ! After what she did to Joel! No1 cares to want to learn about her and her pain or her perspective or whatever cuz naughty dog gave her no back story we had no idea who she was ! There were other characters that could have been chosen to be the other character to play as that had back story from the 1st game ! Like Tommy! Shit even his wife ! I would have liked better, or even ellie gf ! Cuz when u make us like characters who are on 1 team u keep the game or games about those ppl on that team ! Don't make us play as 1 team going after the other the go back in time and now see what the other team is doing ! Especially when the person u have to play as is made into the main antagonist ! If they didn't do that to abby then maybe she could have been likable! But whoever was the person to kill Joel , should not have been playable cuz that person should have gotten killed in the end ! That is the 1 thing that would have made the game feel rewarding ! And it's the 1 thing that didn't happen! N everything ended in misery! But maybe that's what happens to ppl who can't define what a women is ! They end up making shitty game stories cuz they are disconnected from the majority of ppl who play video games ! They made a game they would like ! Not what fans would like ! And they knew what they were doing in advance! It's disgusting! So a bad story can and did ruin what could and should have been a great game ! On top of it all that game didn't deserve 1 award related to its story! There were other things that were good but that 1 thing ruined the rest of the game ! So until they fix it by making last of us 3 start off where Ellie wakes up front a nightmare and all of the game of the last of us 2 , we all get to see wad a nightmare ellie had ! And Joel is who wakes her up from it ! Then in the game u get to play as ellie and Joel in the last of us 3 ! And it be about totally different enemies and they have to go to totally different places ! Except for the zombies obviously they would be the same ! If naughty dog did that ! I would buy the last of us 3 and would be willing to try that franchise again ! But if something like that doesn't happen n they follow the in same steps they left off with how the last of us 2 ended then me and millions of other ppl ( gamers ) will never touch another game from naughty dog ever again !
