bites :(. Mealworms are cannibalistic and will consume eggs and pupa. It is something almost unavoidable.

When you say "fail in molting", I assume you are talking about pupation, right? I can't say I've ever had one die from a bad molt. They sometimes can die in that transitional period of their life though. I do not know the exact causes of it, however, I do believe it is linked to the larva not having had enough moisture/nutrients to complete the pupation process.

@@KCExotics no. Moltinh what i mean is in larva phase. They are changing the skin but when the skin take off in half they are died. 😭. Did you know how this can be happen. In 1 month everything is ok. But after 1 month 1 week, if the larva change they Will be died before they finished

@@PrettyCure-p2z That is strange. I didn't know that was a thing. Do you live in a dry area? Low humidity? I live in a more "tropical" state in the US. Humidity could be the only thing I can think of that could cause their molt to be too difficult for them to get it off. My home humidity is between 40-50%. What is yours?

A year late but what can I do if the substrate gets moldy?
@KCExotics
@KCExotics Жыл бұрын
Remove it. Its no good anymore. Prevention is the key. If you have small worms in it... you can try to get as much of the moldy material out and hope the the remainders do not hinder the rest of the bin. But overall, removal is the right path.

How do you keep it from molding?
@KCExotics
@KCExotics 6 ай бұрын
Good Ventilation. If you keep a top on your enclosure, leave it off while there is food. Moist food releases humidity into the air and it will condense on the sides and drip into the substrate, creating mold

Left to look it up and now curious as to what makes grain mites so bad for the mealworm farm?
@KCExotics

This video was meant to be short. I have a full explanation of preventing and getting rid of grain mites in this video. However, the grain mites portion is further in and the video is almost 10 minutes long. Grain mites just get everywhere and are disgusting little pests. As far as I know, they do not harm your mealworms. However, when the infestation is bad, they literally get in everything. Video containing grain mite info kzfaq.info/get/bejne/epx8h9l6vqy9eJc.html

Why don't you advise that mealworms eat Styrofoam?
@KCExotics
@KCExotics 2 жыл бұрын
I personally don't advise that due to my channel being about breeding feeder insects. The end use for all of these critters, for me, is for them to be consumed by another animal. I don't know for certain that the insect will not forever contain microplastics, which could transfer over into the animal being fed. If you were to want to feed them styrofoam,, I would keep that entire harvest of worms separate, even their beetles, to avoid any contamination.

Recent research looks quite promising, but KZfaq won't let me post a link as a comment. Evidently bacteria in their gut break it down, and it's mostly excreted as CO2. I've just started a colony, but they're purely to break down polystyrene.
