Hi everyone! Today's video will be about 15 fantasy or sci-fi series I won't finish anytime soon. First of all, if you’re an author, it might be a good idea for you to skip watching this video. I do this kind of video only once a year, and the purpose of this video is to inform you that I won’t be finishing any of these series anytime soon. In case you're wondering! So if you’re waiting for a review on any of these, except maybe the first or second book, I’m sorry to say that it won’t happen soon.
As much as I want to finish all the fantasy books and series in the world, it's impossible to do that unless I find the key to immortality. I mean, my TBR pile at the moment is more than 700 books already! That number will keep on increasing, and I still have so many amazing books I want to reread. So yeah, harsh decisions regarding some series have to be made. Let me know your thoughts on these series if you've read them. Do you agree or disagree with my opinion on any of these?
0:00 Intro & Rules
1:52 Lost interest
5:39 Waiting for the series completion

Basically this video could’ve been titled “Authors - Do Recaps!” That simple thing would solve the “I have to reread” problem for so many of us.

Oh man, don't get me started on the series that I have been postponing because I can't find the motivation to reread the prior instalments lol. Honestly, good on you for prioritising the reads that you are actively passionate and excited about, there are too many books to read to force yourself through series that you are feeling apathetic about!

For me, the series that I won't finish: 1. A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin - I love the first 3 books, but the next 2 were just mediocre, and it's been so long that I just don't care what happens anymore. 2. Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss - Same thing as number 1. 3. Sword of Shadows by J.V. Jones - This is a series that starts ok but gets better, with the 4th book being the best. However, that 4th book came out 14 years ago, and no progress has been made on the final one, and I've pretty much forgotten almost everything about it. 4. Craft Sequence by Max Gladstone - This series just never clicked with me. It's an interesting concept, and I kept wanting it to get better, but it never did. I read the first 5 books, which Gladstone himself said comprise "season one" of this series, but I have no desire to continue. 5. Wars of Light and Shadow - I've only read the first book, and it was rough to get through. I really wanted to like it so much, but I just couldn't get past the writing style. I plan on giving the second book at shot sometime this year, but if it doesn't improve, then I might be done.

Haha for number 1-3, most likely all of us won't see the end because they will never be completed by the author. 😂 i hope I'll enjoy WoLaS more than you did! But I agree with you on Craft Sequence.

I don't comment on KZfaq much, but somehow I stumbled on this video and I will tell you what, I adore the Malazan series as well and always recommend it when the topic of books comes up. That said, I just cannot finish the Kharkanas Trilogy & Witness Trilogy either. I own all of the books and I've been stuck at about 75% of Forge for quite a while. It totally has a different feel and just can't hold my interest. I am glad I am not the only one :D

@@PetrikLeo I mentioned it on a previous video I think too, but I PROMISE when you get to the Sando books, it'll pick up again. I think the RJ books are great (notable exceptions being Path of Daggers and Crossroads of Twilight haha), but he makes some choices in how he writes women, the male/female dynamic, and in the fact that no character ever makes a decision that are immensely frustrating. I think the Sanderson books don't necessarily fix that, but add the elements that a lot of cosmere fans tend to love. I would argue up until Sanderson's books, I would not have cared if any of the main characters died except maybe Rand lol (actually, I probably would have been happy if a couple of them died). Then Sanderson somehow manages to get me to tear up in one chapter over a side character I previously couldn't care less about lol.

I read about 20 pages of A Memory Called Empire before putting it down and immediately returning it to the library. I don’t think I ever bounced off a book so hard before. It was the writing style, it was the most “tell don’t show” style I’ve ever seen, and I just couldn’t read anymore than that. I’m not even a prose snob, I just couldn’t stand it.

Having recently entered the world of fantasy books, I'm learning that it's VERY IMPORTANT TO PLAN my series reading. Should I start a series that isn't finished? Should I read a finished series all in a run- or will that make me burnout on the world or writing style? Also: WHY are all fantasy books in a series?! I come from the land of stand alone literature. All these series are a little intimidating! It makes choosing a new read very stressful- ha!

I read book 1 of Farseer by Robin Hobb.... it was awful.. Read book 2 because I thought something must happen, how can this series be so highly recommended otherwise? But no... it is terrible. I stopped after Book 2 as nobody would be able to convince me Book 3 is that dramatically better than it made the depressing torture of reading the first 2 books worthwhile. The only thing mildly interesting in those books was the Fool.

Tbh the fear of forgetting mist what happened is why I binge read series but I can see that many don't like to be 'bound' in a series but that's how I roll😂 I make exceptions for series that have more than 3 books and series like RotE that have series inside the series. I also write notes on my handy, like chapter summaries and I even color names & places when they're mentioned rhe 1st time and my own thoughts in different colors. I always celebrate when I see some twists coming tho I sometimes also am kinda totally wrong😂

I used to be like that, you know. Binge reading a series (if it's a trilogy or quartet) before moving on to something else. But now, I don't know why I can't do that anymore. Maybe it's due to the insanely increased number of books and series on my TBR, I feel like I have to switch to a different series every time I finish a book. :D

I wonder if authors are reluctant to include a recap as it will cut down on the amount of the current story in the Amazon sample. One solution would be to put a sentence at the front of the book saying that the recap is at the back of the book, but this could confuse people. One other solution is to put a recap weblink at the front.

I just read the first Murderbot book and ... yes, bland is what I thought about it. It did nothing for me and I will not continue with the series. And I have the same with A Memory called Empire. I read it when it came out but remember very little. I would definitely need to read it again before continuing but that might never happen. I will probably continue with Skyward Legacy though. At least the first book. Skyward is kinda the series that got me back into reading, so I have some sentimental attachment to it. With She who became the Sun I have the advantage, that I am finally reading it right now and I have He who drowned the World already on my shelf, ready to continue soon after the first book 😁

Very sad not to see The Wheel of Boring on here. Nothing on the list I've already started, so that's good news, I think. I don't think I have any other started series I'm not interested in finishing, Dragonbone chair night have just been the narrator, so maybe I'll go back to that. I'm also never finishing the King Killer Chronicles because every time I finish another book there is a 50/50 chance I start Name of the Wind again so even if Doors of Stone drops and Pat writes even more books I will never be "Finished" with it. Oh, The First Binding, whatever that series is called, that's never getting finished!

I know it's bad for the publishing industry and indie authors but this video for me is my justification why I don't read unfinished series. I'm NEVER even bringing up "George RR Martin/Scott lynch/Patrick rofuss!", I'm talking about the 1-2 years between the books. I forget stuff, I start reading, I say "who are you? And who are you? And what is happening? And why do you care so much?", and I can't care to understand what's going on. I may like the second book if I read back to back, but after a year+ I don't care. And I didn't like first book enough to reread
@PetrikLeo
@PetrikLeo 5 ай бұрын
That's the thing. I'm not encouraging readers to read ONLY completed series. But the first or second book needs to have enough staying power for readers to want to do a reread when the sequel comes out after years. A Song of Ice and Fire, Gentleman Bastards, Kingkiller Chronicle have that power for MANY readers. Some series don't. And when that happens, it's most like a DNF.

That trilogy reads very YA in some aspects and given your taste I don't think it's worth continuing though. However where youre wrong is with Megan O'Keefe's books! The Protectorate trilogy is great and really fast paced, however her new books are fucking incredible. The Blighted Stars was an extremely close runner up for best book of the year right behind Will of the Many. They were equally as incredible, but WotM just had that cliffhanger that made it win my #1 spot.

I totally get not liking Kharkanas. It's quite tough stylistically. But it's def worth reading Witness in my opinion. You HAVE to read A Desolation Called Peace! Have you read the Baru Cormorant books? I always forget. Memory Called Empire is great but it's almost a beat for beat copy of Traitor Baru, much like The First Binding is a copy of Kingkiller. I like that the second gets more original.
@PetrikLeo

I have actually read Traitor Baru Cormorant, but unfortunately, Dickinson's writing is so hard for me to feel invested in. I certainly need to read A Desolation Called Peace, though. Funny you mentioned First Binding. IF the sequel is again another copy of Kingkiller Chronicle, I don't think I would be forgiving. I tend to be very lenient when it's the first book of a series. :)

Intresting.i agree with skyward. When it comes to things i dnf, do you know who clamp is? Their a famous 4 girl group of mangaka in japan. Responsoble for my top 2 favoret stories: wish and cardcaptor sakura. But im afraid to say is not for their story teling skils, is for their ideas and beautifull drawn manga. I love cardcaptor sakura, but it has an ifi ending, and the new story they concluded: cardcaptor sakura clear card, is sadly sooo bad. If they only get a clue on how to tell a story on ccs it would be perfect, cuse wish was perfect, its my favoret one......rant over lol.😂Anyway, you may love clamp.👍

Seeing this clip it is clear that Tales of the Edge by Rebecca Zahabi is not for you. The time you will lose with this series you can occupy with something else. I'm already on volume 2 and today I read something that made me cringe (an allusion to group sex). I was curious to see reviews of this volume. There are few. I think it is as weak, maybe even weaker, than the first volume.

Hi Petrik, Probably you known me as Shelly and I am using my dad's computer,because my account is getting flood with apps. I am writing a fantasy book. My book is going to be about a prince who's about to get marry a princess from a technology country who's kill dragons for their hearts to use their hearts as fuels for their technology. A prince is the actually a dragon rider and he has winds up to get almost murdered by his cousin ,because his cousin who's having an affair with the princess. So Prince's dragon (who's only and his best friend) ends up sacrifices herself to save the prince. Now the prince has came back as a dragon hybrid and he's willing to seek revenge on the ones who had betrayed him. In my book, dragons are like faes (they can take on human forms and dragons. They inspires by European faes lore) and there's a magic system that revolve around them that have to do with gemstones and alchemy. The concept is about dragons vs. machines. I always wants to write a book about a dragon hybrid as the main character, because it's very rare in books and we hardly see in fantasy books these days. I even came up really cool and interesting names for my characters. I even falls love in with the main character that I am writing,because I finds Kasander or "Kass" very likable and fun-loving to write. I am going to make him across Hiccup (How to Train a Dragon) and Locke (Lies of Locke Lamora). He is going to be clever and mischievous but adorable at the same times. I even thinks his relationship with his best friend Aurora (who's a dragon) or "Rori" that he called, is really cute. I already had written almost three chapters so far of my book. I will might publish them (possible with future chapters) on Wattpad and Writeco. I has been thinking to putting the chapters of my book on Radio FM to let people to listen. My title of my book called "Wings of Reckoning". Hopefully someday that it will pick by Obritz or Tor or Bad Robot,because I don't trust Wattpad. I really hope you and other people like my book. I am kinda worry that some people won't like my book,because I am not really good at grammars. I really hope people will like it.

@PetrikLeo it's not to say I don't have an author I'm trash for... but I prefer my warriors with more fang and the gritty roasting that happens between soldiers who've fought in the drenches together for centuries and would still die for each other, even when they are getting on each other last nerve... Is There sexy time? Yes. But strangely, 2 characters finding out they are life mates isn't the reason I am propelled to pick up every book this author puts out. It's the Brotherhood, ever watchfulo of a dangerous big bad thing that endangers the vampyre race. I'm not encouraging you to pick up a vampire paranormal romance, not at all. Here's my point. It's not surprising to me that I have a liking of the Grim Dark fantasy, especially if you have characters that raze each other. Humorous banter during times of conflict. Characters who'd die for each other while insulting their mother.... yes, yes, give me all that. "You're mama's so fat..." & "You're so ugly, you're father..." Meanwhile, leather clad knives out ready to do some serious damage to an evil MF. I want the heros & morally gray characters and the comic relief of a good side character... and a great story! Here's to letting stuff that doesn't work, go, and of finding books that really have us by the...** insert body part here** 😅🤣🤣
