Korea is a complex, fascinating country that has gone through many iterations over centuries. This particular presentation is nothing but hagiography. The illustrations are nicely done and the photos of ceramics are lovely. However, the stories were so simplified that I learned absolutely nothing. For example, I have no doubt that there are many aspects from those 500 dynastic years that continue to influence contemporary South Korea. But how about some illustrations of these effects in today's S Korea? Or how about the influence of movable type on the rest of the world. Did the idea of movable type arrive in Europe from Korea or was it an independent development in both places? I actually enjoyed the comments section more than the presentation by Untold History. Really? Untold? It wasn't even Korean history 101, it was more like a children's book.

Joseon especially in the latter period, looked down upon or not regarded as important of trade(mecantilism) and technological advancement. However, scholastic acievement especially among the ruling class were encouraged.(Confucianism, philosophy, and ethics) Because of ban on Bhuddism, ancestral worshipping predomimated among the upper class as well as shamanism among the ruled class. Importantly, Korea along with China did not go through so-called feudalism which basically works on strict contracts like knights of England, or samurais of Japan. Dealings between people particularly in the field of economical transactions were not carried out based on strict logical calculations and trust, but heavily relied on personal, subjective and emotional judgements or on hierachical differences. Korean kings regarded themselves as like a father figure and his people as innocent children who the King must protect. All from Confucianism idea. Those countries which are regarded as developed-nation in the present time mostly went through this contract based history along with putting great importance on trade and science. Koreans used to be highly emotional and did things as how they feel. Emotion is more important than any other things. Whereas, westners tend to put rationalism at first. This is one of the reason why K-dramas, and K-pops have been so successful, that is to appeal to emotion, basic human psyche. I last my comment with a thought that success of Korea in various areas is hugely rooted in Confucianism's emphasis on the importance of learning which after the Korean war, fully implemented by president Park Junghee, along with other factors.
