We recently ventured to the Eastern Cape and visited our friend Jennie who lives in Jeffreysbay.
As the host (superb host), she took charge of the weekend’s activities and decided to show us her favourite hike!
F O R M O S A P E A K ! ! ! ^^
Formosa Peak or Peak Formosa is the highest point of the Tsitsikamma Mountains, a coastal range located along the Garden Route in South Africa and forming part of the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve.
It is definitely a hidden gem and the views along the way including the view from the final peak, completely makes the (quite tough) climb worth it.
The hike should not be underestimated, as there is also some climbing involved to reach the first peak. If you are not an experienced hiker, it is not advised that you do Formosa by yourself.
The hike is around 8km (4km up and 4km down) in total with +- 900m elevation gain. It took us around 8 hours for the whole journey. We recommend that you start the hike at no later than 8am in the morning.
Tips:
When arriving at the dam, the starting point is towards the right-hand side of the dam.
Chances are good that your feet will get wet during the first part of the hike as there is often water in the path that one walks, so be sure to wear proper footwear.
There are 2 streams at the beginning of the hike, so make sure to take enough water supply for the whole day.
We once tried the hike after it snowed on the Tsitsikamma mountains, but that made it impossible to reach the first peak as there was too much ice making it slippery and dangerous to climb.
Prepare yourself mentally that there is still a fair amount of hiking after the first peak.
Choose good weather. One can see Plettenberg Bay, Robberg, Joubertina, and the Baviaans mountains from the top. It is an absolutely stunning view, but when it is a misty day, you won't be able to see these places, which might mean that you'll have to do the hike again. :-)
Contact Marius Strydom @ 042 272 1721 to let him know that you will be doing the hike at least a day in advance.
