With respect to the "is Dropps ethical?" question: I think it's important to remember that buying from ethical and sutainable brands is a privilege that not everyone has. Some people can kt afford to buy more expensive brands and fibers. Those people should still be able to participate in craft if they want to. Is it worth interrogating our shopping decisions to make the most ethical choice we can? Absolutely. But we should also be careful that our quest to be more ethical and sustainable does not stray into judging those who are unable to make the same choices as us.

I agree about drops. The patterns are a bit complicated, but they are free, and the yarn is affordable. Not all of us can afford expensive yarn.

Sari Nordlund used to work for Novita (she was their in house pattern designer). When she left that company a couple of years ago, she went independent...

So many great quotes “Looks like one you could just buy on SHEIN” *hard eye contact* “which I would NEVER do.” “She looks ready to go to a winery.” The way you’re defending these as spring summer but then also like “you might not get too hot!” Just really cute commentary. Loved the selection and that you showcase free patterns.

Cardigans are perfect for the mild winter that I get in my tropical corner of the world, as it's easier to put on and off depending on the time of the day. I was looking for a pattern for this winter, you read my mind!

Phildar is a French yarn brand created in 1943. It’s a reference in France and Belgium. You can find their yarn in their own shops or other retailers like in Bruxelles (Saint Gilles and Drogenbos). Thank you Bethany for such interesting podcast, as always.

Thank you, Bethany, for this timely video! I’ve just been searching for cardigan patterns to knit one so I can wear it on my first trip to Europe in September/October 🤩 There are some contenders in here that might beat out one of the paid for patterns I’ve been considering! Maybe not to wear in summer for me, but definitely summer knitting!💕

Love your selections! Putting together my own cardigan video was one of my recent favourites because of how much surprising variety exists in the category. Sari Nordlund is certainly a favourite of mine, and I downloaded the liv wrap immediately!

The Campsite Cardigan is one that has really been on my list for years before I was a knitter! I am making myself the Favo Sweater by Fiber Tales.❤ Then I have a few sweaters in mind but I definitely want to prioritize it soon! I absolutely love cardigans because i can easily take them off and on as the weather changes and it doesn’t mess up my hair or outfit usually!

I’m knitting a lacy baby blanket now. Finally got comfortable enough to work the repeats without having the pattern. Lace is much easier than I anticipated

Hi Bethany, glad to watch another of your videos ! It's funny that you've never heard of Phildar, as this is a pretty "historical" french brand of yar' and knitting pattern. That's actually one of the two only brands that we used to have here (along with Bergère de France) and that I remind my grandmother purchasing from. Nice selection as usual !

I just decided to pick up my knitting again today for the first time in 6 months, so this video was perfectly timed! I'm planning make some progress on the second sleeve for my first sweater, which I hope will be completed in time for the cold months coming ahead (I live in the southern hemisphere). I'll have to save this video for later this year, unfortunately it will be a while before I see some warm weather again...

Yay! What sweater are you knitting? I am making my very first sweater the Favo Sweater by Fiber Tales!❤ I have had to take it out sooo many times trying to master the Honeycomb Brioche but I think that I finally have it down! I started knitting three years ago but i have stuck to baby and toddler knits with a few child sized items thrown in.🥰 I am struggling a little to knit with how humid it has been where i live!

Hi Bethany, Thanks for you video. I love Gilet Sixtine. Thanks for point it out. The issue with Sadness Garn (in the US) is that you have to buy the booklet + yarn for a project included in the booklet. There is some good designs on their books but I am not sure if I like them enough to pay for it Inga (knitting traditions podcast) also said that the booklet was free if you buy yarn for a project. I wonder if that is how it works in Europe.

Thanks for your great video ! "La dame de fer" (the iron lady) is the nickname of both the Eiffel Tower AND Margaret Tatcher ^^ It's pronounced like "fair" ;-) IMO "ethical is on a spectrum, and drops is pretty good, but not the best. I've begun my knitting journey with drops yarns and I'm style enjoying their patterns. Thanks to these affordable brands, everyone can knit quality yarns, even ppl on a budget 🙂

I made the LaDame de Fer Cardigan for a friend using a fingering weight cotton blend for spring. The pattern has several errors, I had to use the pattern from I Knit Paris that it was published in along with the free Ravelry pattern to figure the instructions out. Some things in the book were correct and some things in the PDF were. Example the chart is correct in the PDF; but some repeat instructions were omitted in the PDF, but included in the book. The sweater did turn out well despite the pattern frustrations.

a note for the sandnes garn patterns: it's technically not a free pattern because you have to buy the booklet ($8 to $18 usd, cheaper than individual patterns for sure) with the yarn

Sandnes Garn pattern books aren’t actually free, even if you buy the yarn😢 you need to order yarn to be able to order the booklets, but you still have to pay for the booklet. For me, its usually between 5 an 10 euros per pattern book (in Germany) with a bunch of different patterns

In Poland you can buy the booklets separately, no need to buy yarn to be able to do it… so it’s possible. Anyway, it is still a great deal as for the usual price of one pattern you get like 5-15 patterns or so :)

Am I the only one who avoids patterns that look like they are from a store?😂 I always try to refine my methods to make them as seamless and refined as possible but I avoid very common or popular looking patterns! I just love the uniqueness of knitting my own garments and I feel like if you cant tell I made it then much of the joy and excitement is gone. It is like growing what you see in the grocery store instead of unique heirloom varieties that are more scarce…❤

Hi Bethany, thanx for all the great tips on free cardigan patterns. It saves a lot of time for us, but I guess it took you a lot to put everything together, and your selection is truly tasteful. On another note, I couldn't help noticing this picture on the wall behind you. Did you know the text is in Romanian? It's where I'm from and not a widely spoken\spread language, so.... I was amazed to see it there.

@@WellLovedKnits That's wonderful! Greetings from Ploiesti then. Keep on the good podcasting job. So inspiring...after seeing you in the white Ranunculus - which fits very well- I bought the pattern myself. It's actually the first sweater I' m going to do using a pattern.... hope I'll be able to read and follow it. I've done a lot of knitting but I kind of winged it to fit. So... fingers crossed!

Crochet accessories seem to be having a moment lately… For the first time ever my 19-year-old daughter is wearing a lot of granny square inspired textiles. 😂 I think the mesh knitting patterns are influenced by crochet.

Actual "lace" has a pattern stitch on both sides. It is quite complicated. What most people call lace is actually a simple pattern stitch on one side and on the reverse you knit over knit stitches and purl over purl stitches, much easier than true lace.

Well, watching how the puddles of sweat just dried up within 48 hours was so satisfying, I used what I read about the other day. Although it actually took about 72 hours for my sweating to normalize, I went ahead and go'ogled the latest by Cynthia Yulesin and I don’t have to change clothes 2 times a day.
