6:40 The extra die on the CPU that's not covered in Thermal paste is the PCH (Sount/North Bridge) it doesn't really need cooling nowadays since they've managed to optimize their power consumptions quite well. If you put thermal paste on then you're actually transferring the Heat from the CPU to the PCH as well since they're on the same HeatPipe.

It's amazing how little attention "re-use" gets in the context of environmental sustainability. It's a far better first-line solution to e-waste than recycling. Plus it's a great feeling when you successfully resurrect a "dead" device :) Even though these are "Old Tech" they're fine for email, browsing the web and most things people need a computer for. Also props for installing Ubuntu on the units that won't run OSX.

In my public school you can get one for free if you join the computar science course. Before the school hands them to you, you and your parent must take an oath that you are gonna take the best care of it, and you are not going to modify it's software. Backlight has a small smc fuse, if you don't have the tools to change them bridge it with a bit of solder and don't drop water on it again. You can buy the schematics for online for a few dollars. Anytime you got no backlight check that fuse at the start of the backlight circuit 👍 you can resolder your own efi chip without the lock to get around the padlock

School districts in my part of the USA bought Macbooks in large quantities for both the teachers and the students. Naturally lots of problems followed. They still do it. One of the schools in my area was talking about throwing away a bunch of their old computers despite them being fine aside from being stupidly full and a bit dusty. The computers worked fine really. Not really much damage, they could actually load editing programs and things like that without a problem despite their age. Used some of those computers for all four years I was there and never had any notable issues (aside from people not actually knowing how to use some of the programs they were teaching with) and as previously stated, they had literally filled the computers to the gills with random files from quite literally a decade ago as I found when poking around. Edit: not actually sure what happened to the computers after I graduated as I didn't keep in contact with some of the people in the know.

The die with no thermal paste on it is the chipset. Chipsets do get warm, but no where near as hot as the CPU itself, so manufacturers like to cheap out and not bother with thermal paste. In some laptop designs, the chipset is on the same substrate as the CPU, like in these MacBooks, which could make you think that it’s part of jt. Chipsets usually require little to no cooling. Sometimes there will be no cooling. Sometimes there will be no cooling with a bare die, and sometimes there will be minimal passive cooling with a small heatsink, similar to these MacBooks. In a few edge cases, like with AMD’s X570, the chipset requires active cooling with a small fan. You did nothing wrong putting thermal paste on the chipset, I just wanted to clear up the confusion about it.
@yevoidstar
@yevoidstar 3 жыл бұрын
They don't "cheap out" it's because the chipset can't physically support the temperatures that the CPU will get (and transfer to it if thermal paste is applied), hence some manufacturers even make the heat pipe recessed for the side covering the PCH

A company I worked for once had thrown out a half dozen IBM Model 95s about a week before I started working there. They were equipped with PS/2 Type 4 CPU boards with the Pentium 90 on-board. Very rare and very expensive (like $3000 in the mid 90's). They were only about 18 months old at the time, but the company switched infrastructures and made more profit than they knew what to do with. I owned a model 95 at the time with an AMD 5x86 at 150Mhz...it was nice at the time, but the Pentium 90 could do better esp with the Type 4 vs Type 3 CPU board that I had. :(

Nathan was replacing thermal paste but you did not mention that. I have a MacBook Air that has a 2011 date. Would you suggest I replace the thermal paste?

@@fgcorp It's based off of FreeBSD which is unix. GNU is also similar to unix but linux is not unix. Therefore, MacOS is not linux based but rather unix based.

The part of the silicon die where no thermal paste is present is the platform controller hub(PCH). The PCH is in charge if IO and does not produce that much heat that’s why Apple left it alone

@02:40. Ditto! Only i would like to keep some software on macs salvaged in RWC California (spitting distance from Fakebook and G headquarters). It's usually a simple fix i.e resetting smc and the like. How do i keep Photoshop but delete enterprise on pre 2012 models? Is it possible? I usually get not permitted or sudo doesn't work. Old school is good school, the streets are paved with silicon,
