I live in Perth, Western Australia and was out fishing with my dad and two other people 1 week before this attack, 3km off City Beach which is about 6kms from Cott. A shark of this size came up and circled our boat several times, I've seen many sharks in my time on the water, but none of those came close to the absolute girth of this thing. It was like a Mack truck and didn't look real, to the extent everyone on the boat was simply speechless and looking at each other in total shock. My dad who was the skipper of our boat and used to work on prawn trawlers as a young man (and who also had many a tale of 10ft+ tiger sharks) was so shocked by what we witnessed, he radioed in to VJ6LQ marine search and rescue to warn them of what we'd just witnessed.... One week later, Ken was taken. Will never know if it was the same shark hanging around the area or not, all I know is that experience will stick with me for the rest of my life......

Two similar cases happened in Greece in 1948 and in Croatia in 1955. In the first case in Greece a boy was attacked in front of two friends in 3 feet depth 5 meters from the shore, a GW of about 6 meters with the first bite severed his arm and then bit him from the head to the middle and disappeared with the body of the poor young man in to the abyss. In the second case in Opatja (Croatia) a german young woman was attacked in front of dozens of witnesses 10 meters from the shore in 6 feet of depth by a GW of more than 5 meters which first severed her foot and then dragged her away without anyone doing anything to help her.

I was there. This guys account is spot on. There is a white shark season in Perth from November to March. The reason for that is the migration of Whales. Some of the white sharks swim about 10,000 kilometres from Africa to feed on the Whales that get injured or killed while mating. Ps. About 2 years ago another swimmer was killed by a great white at Port beach which is just 5 km from where Ken Crew passed away.

Ken Crew nearly stayed in bed because it was raining and cold. But he didn't like to let his mates in the pod down. He was attacked in waist deep water, and then shark chased Dirk Avery literally out of the water. He was kicking the shark as he backed out of water. That was one shitty, nasty great white. It's the RATE of danger which is important. People die of dog bites at the same rate in the US and in Oz. People die of bee stings at the same rate, too. Yet very few people stay indoors out of fear of bee stings or dog bites. (Car accidents are MUCH more deadly than any of these.) I'll admit that Oz has different dangers, and these are scary because they're different. Crocodiles kill the same number of people as dogs or bees do. Poisonous snakes kill people at double that rate. Sharks and box jellies kill fewer people than dog bites or bee stings. People dying of car accidents don't even make the news. Shark bites make the news, and that's the only reason to be scared of something that hardly ever happens.

This was probably the most famous attack in the Perth area in recent decades, because so many people witnessed it. Apart from being a very popular beach, it was in such shallow and clear water and the restaurant overlooks the beach directly so it's possible to see everything right below, and they certainly did that day. I prefer other beaches, but Cottesloe is really popular with young people. There are nets now and the shark spotter helicopter goes by often. My younger brother was circled by a smaller shark on this beach once, but he doesnt think it's anything to worry about and insists we are mistaken for seals when white sharks do attack. Thanks a lot to the idiots who worked hard to convince the public of this nonsense, and to those who perpetuated it

I'm also sick of hearing this "seal" scenario. It may be true in a small number of cases but I think many attacks are more territorial and sometimes it's a desperate, hungry shark needing sustenance. I grew up in Perth have swum and surfed that very part of the coastline many times. I know the 1925 attack. My mother told me of the horror the grey nurse attack on a hot summer's late afternoon, when the coastline didn't have as much sand as it does now, so swimmers trod around on sharp reef outcrops. The man who was singled out - literally the shark swam between swimmers to get to him - had cut his foot and the shark went for him. That grey nurse then attacked the oars on the surf life savers' boat dragging him out of the water, why? Blood in the water. He was dead by the time he got to shore, blood on the shore for sometime, days as 'the story' goes. This second attack 2000, the shark beelined the forward swimmers. Now were they racing each other to the shore, or tired from a long swim, the second guy over exerting himself, so his heart was pumping? Sharks often attack for reasons of their opportunistic predatory natures. The two guys did nothing wrong only put themselves in danger, perhaps, by sending signals that to the shark meant they seemed to be or were in some kind of distress. As the guy in '25 did, by having a bleeding foot. No human fault. Dogs are often attacked, their hearts beating fast sending signals. I disagree with the attack/predation distinction. It is always predatory or perhaps territorial but then the ocean(s) are a shark's territory - they travel so far.

Agree to disagree again Hal. This was a predation event that was thwarted by intervention. If it was a territorial attack, it would have bitten the other swimmers first since it was heading into the shoreline. Great Whites will hunt seals on the shorelines in SA and Australia, and are also known to do so in SoCal.

I agree!

Great whites finish their prey, so 2 things made me go territorial. 1 it severely bit Crew and could have eaten him then, and 2, only one in the water while Avery was helped to shore was a bleeding Crew and the shark never returned.

It's very hard to tell. I'm on the fence without knowing more info. There's no way of truly knowing if it would have consumed him. I'd err on the side of yes for precaution's sake.

@@SharksHappen I did hear of a massive female white in South Africa that had a reputation of killing multiple seals and not eating them. When she showed up all the other sharks would disappear. This could be a result of opportunistic killing to slow feed on prey if it feels it can dominate against other predators in the area.

If it was a predation attempt, the shark would've taken an easier target i.e. one of the swimmers lagging behind in deeper water. I'm wondering if this shark recognized the two strongest swimmers as the leaders of the group and attacked them for that reason.

When a 16’ shark goes into 3’ of water at a public beach, you know it’s hungry and knows exactly what it’s doing. He missed the seal and decided to go grab an easy human or 2. I believe he would have consumed Ken if they didn’t get him out. Same with the other dude. 3’ of water at a beach is not a territorial attack. My opinion

A 16 ft GW doing this in knee high water seems not quite right, considering the circumference of the shark. Must of been deeper water

First I've heard of this attack. Extremely hard to believe a 15' white in 3' of water on its own accord. A white that large is extremely thick/ wide, which means most of its body would've been out of the water. At any rate if it went into that shallow of water, it wanted those dudes bad. And if it solely territorial why would it have passed the rest of the pod to get the guys that were almost out of the water? Almost like it didn't want them to get away! This is a headscratcher! Lots of questions, and much to consider. Urine, heart rates, colors, deodorant/cologne, sweat, electrical, were the men communicating with each other before the attack i.e.yelling? Gonna be obsessed with this one.

@@LeonardioAUwell waist deep would be about 3 feet. Also the first attack happened 50 meters from shore, so I'm thinking that one happened in deeper water.

Could sharks be getting smarter in the way they hunt? by going for the front two would that make the others panic and swim the other way into deeper water, i don't know ,just a thought, hey they have been around for millions of years and like most animals adapt to survive...

From what ive heard, it attacked the first guy when he was further out probably in around 2-3m of water or 50m from shore. The second guy wouldve been in 3ft or waist deep water.@@michaelshields6326
