I mentally excluded solo artist from criticism as, well, most of their work is solos so it's a little unfair. Totally agree with you on Gilbert and Petrucci. This list was almost certainly written by non guitarists or those that don't understand technical guitar playing at the very highest level.

Eruption wasn't Eddie's best solo, but it was the most influential solo of all time. And I'm 52 and was there when it came out. There was NOOOOOOOBODY who sounded like Eddie (then or ever). But it was like a completely different form of music, it was so amazing. I can't imagine anyone afterwards who plays hard rock or metal who wasn't influenced by EVH, or at the very least, influenced by someone influenced by EVH.

I think the term, "greatest," needs to be defined. Not only does, "greatest," mean complexity and difficulty, but it also means level of recognition. Eruption fits the bill of any way you can define the term. It's legendary in the sense it was an entirely new way of playing the instrument at the level he played. For the time, and still to this day, it is extremely difficult and complex to nail as Eddie did. Van Halen was and is a mainstream band but were able to pull things off such as Eruption and still remain in the mainstream versus a pre-self titled or ...And Justice for All Metallica, Megadeth, etc... Now when I say mainstream that can be an entirely different conversation, but you may get my point. Every facet of Eruption makes it the greatest guitar solo of all time.
