Our India street food challenge is on! Can we feed our family on $15 worth of street food? Join us to find out. We love Indian food and have eaten so much of it, but tonight we try at least six new (to us) foods. We have our go-to South Indian food: Idly, ghee dosa, mini idly in sambar, tomato onion uttapam, and fresh lime soda. But, we are no longer in south India. This is western India, in the state of Maharashtra. The food is different and the spices are…spicier. As we weave our way through the streets of the Zaveri Bazaar, we get to taste so many exciting flavors and textures. For Kelly, this is a vegetarian's dream come true! For everyone else, we didn’t even notice the meat was missing because the flavors and textures were fantastic. If you are in Mumbai, you have to add this street food market to your list.
We needed way more than three nights in Mumbai. There are so many things to experience and see. We have to come back in the future. I don’t think we realized how much we were going to love this big city. When you come here, plan for at least a week or more. Even though we are sad to leave Mumbai, we can’t wait to show you where we head next: Amritsar!

We are the Bags Packed Family: Jonathan and Kelly with our three children. We sold our home in Alaska, USA, eight years ago, and headed overseas. We are teachers and found fantastic teaching positions in Chennai, India. Two years later, we moved to the United Arab Emirates. Three years after that, during the beginning of the pandemic, we made the move to our current teaching jobs in Indonesia. We love traveling and finding adventures as a family. We hope that our travels will inspire and provide our children with the confidence to meet new people, try new foods, and enjoy learning a new language. Chole Tikki = chickpeas and potatoes patties, no cabbage its cucumber. Vada Pav, fried potatoe with masala dipped in chickpeas batter. It's iconic fast food in Mumbai. It's awesome with fried chillis and dry garlic chutney. Yes Mumbai is the most decent place. People are easy going, generally not going to cheat you or harass you. Poodla is made of chickpeas batter. Think of it like creap made from chickpeas batter. Most common Indian batter is made of besan = chickpeas flour, no egg. Kachori Chatt = Kachori is like a big poori with spices. Including Indian crispy fried noodles called sev. It contains chutneys, green generally corriander, mint and green chilli pounded to a paste. Tamarind, sweet and sour it's brown in colore. Garlic chutney, pure garlic with red chilli powder. These are basic Indian chutneys. You should have tried Bhel, Indian crispy rice with sev and onions, tomatoes and other thibgs with all three chutney. Another Mumbai iconic food. India is a nation of various tribes. We have more similarities then differences and we embrace our differences by learning from one another hence when we are united as a nation we are unstoppable. Our history and culture is deep as the ocean. What you and most travelers never see are the various layers of our interwoven culture. Every empire wantex a piece of India's wealth not just tangible things but our science, music, match, dance, art, architecture and on and on. Though you have not visited most of India's temples and archeological sites but that's where you see the depth of the ancient Indian civilization. We Indians don't care to convert you but to understand us you should visit some of our iconic temples. Marvel at the beautiful stone sculptures which puts to shame the Italian renaissance. Our temples are not only for worship but a place of energy. Energy that rediates if you tune in. It's positive, calming, energy. Experience it.

Cedar is so cute. She always gives a thumbs up even before she realizes if it’s good, or even if it’s not something she likes. Such a good sport. Forest is always asleep but so cute when he is awake, and even more when he is excited. But my favorite is Granite; that boy loves his food. He’s so chill and cool. What great kids-they are all so patient and well-mannered. I just love watching your family and your adventures. It would be so cool to meet you one day.

I loved how you all enjoyed the authentic street food experience here. For street food, be careful with the chutneys, especially the green ones, not always made well, due to various reasons, including how those green veggies were grown. It is fun to see your family exploring the street foods in Mumbai and despite being from here I haven't tried the khau galli (eatery alley) experiences much. But because I lived in US for a while, most such street foods that I missed over there I try to eat at restaurants or smaller shops selling such food than the street vendors as my stomach can't handle the street food preps anymore. After eating the poodla, when your son said his fingers were burning with some chilli possibly, it is either the chilli or the lime soda's acidity that could have likely caused the burn on his skin. Some aerated drinks here have too much acidity, similarly some of the red hot spices too have too much hotness in them. The red paste was likely garlic and red chillies based chutney with the poodla. Hope his finger ok now. With the kachori and all other dishes the green spicy sauce is usually green chillies and cilantro based sauce. The red sweet or sweet and tangy sauce is usually a tamarind with jaggery sauce- or rather these sauces are called chutneys. That last drink was mango milk shake and possibly with dry fruits in it. Or the dry fruits drink could have been another one, which the other guy tried.

Hats off to you man, Its not easy to hold the child and vlog all the time. I think you need to buy a adjustable trolley for forest. I know you may be changing arms to hold forest many times during vloging.

Amazing to see Mumbai and Mumbai people, a lot of tourists go to Northern cities like Delhi for most of their India trip and they definitely feel overwhelmed there, also getting overcharged here and there, but in Mumbai fair price is fair price for everyone. Of course there will still be places (monuments, historical sites) charging more for non-Indian tourists, but in general shops, street vendors and food stalls don't overcharge. Nor will you see people hassling tourists randomly.

cane juice is best without ice. Fresh. Amazing. Fresh lime soda are hit or miss. There are some that are perfected depending on locations. Also loving how you have kids more involved. Forest missing out hehe I feel him.

Congratulations on that price and smashing that challenge! I was in Mumbai yesterday and shelled out Rs. 11000, yup, eleven thousand and then some, on one dinner for 6. No doubt the dinner was excellent and the location of the restaurant wonderful, but that makes me congratulate you even more!

Again, the kids are amazing at being open and taking the first bite to try every food. Most kids wont even try the first bite. And mr wobbly legs nver failed being cute just to be asleep the whole tour then waking up near the end just for a piece of bread. 🤣😂
