So thankful I decided to learn to can at 64. No one in my family cans. Now at 72, my pantry is full of 8 ounce jars and pints of pork, ground beef, roast beef, chicken, turkey, corned beef and lots of potatoes and butter. I have even started canning the tallow from my ground beef. Feel so blessed.

Here’s a tip: Buy wipes that are unscented, with no additives for your long term storage. Dry them in 2 inch high stacks in the sun or use a fan. Vacuum seal them in several bags. they become very small and compact. Open the bag and add a bit of water to soften when the time comes (if needed). They never go bad, are extremely light when dried, can be used as TP, coffee filters, fold into a square to use as a bandage , knead any type of oil into a dry wipe to make a fire starter. Presto !!!

My son my ex husband and his best friend all thought I was crazy for prepping. It was a source of arguments many times. All three were hit by Ian my son may not have power for four months. All three have been surviving from MRE meals given out by the National Guard. No water was handed out and FEMA no where in sight. I don't live in Florida any longer but I can tell you when Covid lock downs first hit people panicked. For me it was just another day. I had everything I needed and the peace of mind that gave me was worth more than silver or gold. BTW the three people who laughed at me and told me I was stupid.....are now believers.

This is an important message for people who feel overwhelmed at the thought of prepping and they don't know where to begin. We can all learn from others ! Some prep is better than nothing! When the pandemic hit that should have been a warning for everyone to take stock in what you need and how to prepare for any emergency even weather related disasters. It's up to you to learn and figure it out! Toilet paper was never an issue for me because as a divorced Mom I learned to stock up on necessities when I had a little extra money. I'm about half way through your video and wanna add a few things not mentioned yet. Of course there's plenty more we just don't think about until someone brings it up in conversation/comments.Get a few Zippo lighters, cans of lighter fluid and flints (bulk if possible on flint) Oil lamps/hurricane lanterns and/or lamp oil/kerosene and a large roll of wick to fit what you have. Gotta have light in case the lights go out unexpectedly, unless you keep solar lights from dollar stores charged up. I know these aren't edibles/drinks but they're a staple of survival in my opinion. You've got a great list so far, I'm taking notes on what I left out or low on. Making a rocket stove from cinder blocks is another way to cook too, so I keep all shipping packing paper, and newspaper (no wax type) to use for starting fire. Save old cooking oil in cans/jugs for starting fire in case needed, helps save on charcoal lighter fluid or for a bonfire for warmth. Thanks for sharing!

MANUAL CAN OPENER!!! A high quality one, not the cheap crap from the dollar stores. If you're planning a bug out bag, or get home bag, you better have a P51 in _each_ bag! A P51 is bigger than a P38, so you have more leverage. It's still small enough to go anywhere: dog tag chain, first aid kit, tackle box, etc. I keep one on my keyring! They're cheap, and weigh nothing. Be sure you get the government surplus _steel_ ones, NOT the cheap aluminum crap from wally world.

Spot on. Stockpiling is something I do naturally having been raised in the Appalachians. It was how we survived hard winters and seemed quite normal to me. In recent years I've stepped up my game quite a bit because of the things going on in the world. My husband saw me adding spices and salt to my buggy once at a place that was selling them on the cheap and asked me why. The simple answer was "so I'll have them when I need them". The past couple of years I've added the idea of having things to barter. And I've been doing it all a little at a time.

May I suggest when you buy the rice (flour, grits etc) to put it in the freezer for about 10 days before putting it in your preps. Things can live in the rice and the freezer will kill them keeping it bug free long term. Also as someone who got roof damage from Ian, which dropped water and ceiling tiles in my pantry, when possible put things in some form of palstic bag and sturdy plastic bin with a lid. It helps keep critters out, but also can protect from unexpected damage. In case you move or you need to bug out also it is much easier to grab a bin than 24 separate bags or boxes of anything. If you don't have room for a bin maybe disguise it with an old sheet and call it a side table or nightstand. Thanks again for another great video!

Bay leaves, find a Mexican food store. They have bags with 50+ leaves in them, for less than $4. It may say "Laurel "leaves, which are Bay leaves, as Bay leaves come from the Laurel tree. Then you have some for cooking, and some to prevent bugs from getting in your beans, flour, rice, etc.

Great Video - If I may add to the list, and help with some understandings: Dried beans ARE seeds. Plant them and see what happens. - Those big cans (#10) of mixed vegetables AND lots if re-sealable Freezer bags and hard plastic containers. Once you open a big can, re-package the unused portions. - Caned Tomatoes; once you open them, pick out the seeds and plant them. If you buy green onions, check the roots on them, then plant them in potting soil (potting soil - add that to the list) - Also, Bleach (without any additives or perfumes - about 1 teaspoon per gal or water and let sit for an hour or so, disinfects already clean water (clean rain water) - it wont disinfect pond or dirty water - Must filter first) - Large roles of Aluminum Foil, Roles of clear Plastic (Make a Low-To-The-Ground Cover for seedlings and Rain Catch) - I recommend Tie-Wire (from a hardware store) - Tie limbs, sticks together to make a improvised framework around seedlings, then cover with clear plastic - This may not be a good recommendation, but packets of mustard, ketchup, and a few extra napkins from restaurants (use your imagination) - I have foldable solar panels that I've pared up with battery chargers (rechargeable AA and AAA battery's)and a few HAM radios and Flash-lights - Water filters (alexapure, berkey, or Sawyer - Checkout camping and outdoor section of your store) - One-a Day Multi vitamins - Ant-Acids - For Barter, Bulk Tobacco, rolling-Papers (A man will see reason, and help you work for a few hours, in exchange for a few smokes - be careful, he'll be back for more) - Barter Drinking alcohol (I recommend Rum - its cheaper than most Liquors, Strong, sweet and Better Than NOTHING - stores long term very well) - Build Several comprehensive First Aid Kits - Don't forget Baking Powder and Yeast. - If the world goes to crap, forget about child labor laws - a neighbor with children, will put them to work gardening and children love hard rock candy (it stores well enough in cool, dark dry place) - Extra gloves, socks. - Go to salvation army or Goodwill, and get all the extra clothing you can, to barter with or to patch with - Cotton is King - Clothes detergent (Zote Soap - Comes in a Bar-Form for hand washing clothes) - Extra Buckets (you'll be glad you did) - Not sure if this is true, but 2/3 of the world washes clothes by hand (think pre-1900s) - Coffee! - Ok, thats enough for now.

I vacuum seal salt and white sugar without oxygen absorbers. I vacuum seal flour, beans and rice with an oxygen absorber. Good luck and happy prepping.

@@kerissadarr6672 Ziplock bags are not manufactured for long term storage. Rationing dry food into ziplock bags will not harm your food for short term storage. You may even be able to vacuum seal the bags but the bags will likely lose the seal quickly and your food will be compromised. I've been prepping for a couple of decades so my stockpile is pretty well established. I started small and it grew from there. I first determined that weather was a big factor in how and what I stockpiled. I live in an area where tornadoes are a problem, where frigid weather can shut us down for a week ir more. When covid came and there wad no toilet paper...I had plenty and was able to share with other family members. They don't find my prepping to be funny anymore. I have stockpiles of everything you mentioned. Over time I have invested in a hard crank radio which also gas a USB port fir me to charge my cell phone ir iPad. I gave 2 food dehydrators. When I find a great sale on frozen vegetables I buy the, dehydrate and store in jars. I invested in a vacuum sealer. When I buy beans, flour, sugar, etc in bulk, I divide it all into 1# packages. Just for me, I cook 1# of pinto beans a month so the 12# bag of pinto at Sam's is a great deal. I put stuff like rice, flour and sugar into paper lunch bags before I vacuum seal to prevent any particles from getting into the vacuum. I then put the flour in the freezer overnight the help kill any bugs. Smaller packaging can make bartering or selling easier. I made a list of foods that I like and keep a minimum of 12 cans of peas, corn, green beans, my 2 favorite soups, etc. When I've used 3 cans of something I replace it, always rotating the older stuff to the front. Before ANYTHING goes on the shelves I se a permanent marker to write the best by date in large numbers on the top of the can or on the label. One thing I always tell my neighbors is to save plastic milk jugs, cat litter containers, anything that can hold at least a gallon of water, and right before an extended freeze is predicted, fill them with water for flushing your toilet. I gave a ZeroWater pitcher and keep plenty of filters on hand, to help clean my drinking/cooking water. I keep baby wipes to "bathe". At my apartment complex, we were without water for almost 2 weeks when pipes broke during one of our major ice storms. I used up my water fir flushing but I also had a 5 gallon bucket with a lid and some trash bags. Makeshift toilet that you can put a lid on and throw away the trash bag. When my lease is up in the apartment in a few months, I intend to move to a house in the country to be near my older sister and will have a garden. She has chickens for eggs and we can buy a cow and a pig for the freezer. Sorry for the long post but prepping is something I've been passionate about for decades. Enjoyed the video!

Always think outside the box and remember, "There is always another way, you just have to find/think of it!" Also something to think about, canned foods (veggies) keep for a long time and about 1/3 of the contents is water. If you are making a stew, do not drain the water from the can but use the entire contents in the stew or other dishes. This helps make your clean water go farther.

I purchased qt & pint canning jars in bulk about 3 yrs ago because I knew I was going to retire and that food prices were going up. Canned insane amounts of chicken, pork cushion meat, ground beef, chuck, bone broth, etc. Then we invested in a freeze dryer and started gardening. Holy cow. Amazing. And we started storing water, water, water. But one point I would like to add is if you put away home canned goods, they are already hydrated and cooked so in the event you don't have access to water to rehydrate or any way to cook your foods (I'm assuming you will have provisioned for some sort of cooking even if it's a home made solar oven/cooker). I'm getting ready to make and freeze dry ready made meals. Each batch, I add a little more water to our stash for "just in case". I pray every day that we will only need to use our stash for normal everyday life and not because the SHTF or we have a personal emergency.

One item I see some of these videos forget are candles and candle wax. You can't get anything better that's cheap for starting a fire, as an emergency camp stove or a small heater. My friends give me their used leftover candles for my wood stove and I have melted them down to make myself new scented ones. 🕯

When I first started preparing I didn’t have a lot of extra money and I really wanted to start. I started selling small items in my home and having yard sales of unused items. I made a few hundred dollars in a few weeks. I made a list of what I wanted to start with and went on my first haul. I got everything in my list and some extra ! I wish I had more money back then because since then I have paid two to three times as much !!!!

Spam is on special this week at Costco. 17.99 includes coupon, ends up at $3.00 a can. Limit of 3. I bought my 3 and will go next week and buy another 3. They had quite a good stock of it too. Full pallet on the end cap and I could see at least 2 more in the storage above

One thing I had to chime in with is that if you don't eat beans, don't prep with beans. Choose a different shelf stable thing you can make a soup or stew with. My family can't actually tolerate that much beans, because of gut health issues. I definitely don't wanna be in a survival or emergency situation with a tummy ache!

Love the tips. Have gotten my husband started on prepping for food. We found some food grade barrels (plastic) on marketplace for $20. They are not large but just the right size to fit in a closet. We started months ago on the can goods and dry goods items. The dry goods fit great in the barrels. Our kitchen pantry is so stocked up with can goods I'm afraid they might collapse! Lol. But that's a good thing.

Another idea. Keep some milk jugs and fill them with water now. Use them later to flush the toilet. This allows you to keep your store bought drinking water for drinking. Personally I like oatmeal and also cream of wheat. Go with what you like to eat when stocking up. Good thick liberal newspapers could make decent toilet paper in a pinch.

I'm glad salt is on your list. Consider doing a video on salt curing meat. I wouldn't cure meat with iodized salt. Oats have so many uses but they have first aid benefits, too. I've used them for skin irritation, burns and scrapes on many occasions.

Wouldn't buying brown unbleached wheat grains and storing that in sealed buckets buying a little at a time since it can store for a long time until you need to use ( and buying a hand used grinder to turn it into flour) credit to a video I watched is I think another good thing to invest in.
