The second episode is a satire on entertainment shows and our insatiable thirst for distraction set in a sarcastic version of a future reality.
In this world, everyone is confined to a life of strange physical drudgery.
The only way to escape this life is to enter the 'Hot Shot' talent show and pray you can impress the judges.

The fact that they used a song that's commonly used in the X-Factor, the way they used text in the same was as BGT/X factor and that they mentioned that it's on AFTER the X factor final is fucking GENIUS

Shit, they decided to air THAT straight after that year's X Factor final? Best scheduling ever. And holy fuck, what an incredible piece of TV "15 Million Merits" was. Unbelievably tense.

This was great. It takes 1984, We, and Brave New World, lines them up, and chucks an X-box at them. I love all three of those books (which this episode was clearly derrived from), but the episode updated them in a severely needed way. Daniel Kaluuya plays an amazing Winston Smith/D-503/Bernard Marx.

Watched this whole episode mesmerised, without realising the lead actors were Daniel Kaluuya and Jessica Findlay, even though I've seen them both before (in Skins and Downton Abbey respectively). Sign that they're great actors as I saw the characters and not the 'real' people!

My understanding of this is: people are forced to spend their lives living in tiny boxes with tv screens for walls, riding exercise bikes which in turn power said tv screens, and the only way to escape is to take part in one of the talent shows which is likewise broadcast to others watching (and powering) the screens. Sounds... absolutely brilliant! Kind of reminds me of the season finale of the first new series of dr who...

Best thing on TV I've seen this year. I love Brooker's comedy work but this is the best drama he's done, over dead set and last weeks Black Mirror. I think alot of people would have missed what he was really getting at, but Bing was certainly talking for me when he gave that Fuck you speech. Its made all the more relevant by the fact that the winners of this years X-factor look like 4 pornstars from a lesbian gangbang. Thank you Charlie, for putting something real on my Black Mirror.

@moonsugar1 even if it wouldn't have been straight after the X-Factor, it would still be ironic to be shown on a television network that also sends stuff like x-factor, in my opinion. Of course that it aired straight after the X-Factor final made me crack up even more in this particular situation.

@L4r00n Because it's not ironic. The idea isn't that television is terrible. The idea is that drivel that we use to distract us is terrible. For example, the fact that reading Sweet Valley and Enid Blynton is more likely to fry intelligent perceptions than give them is no reason not to read Wuthering Heights, or anything else by the Bronte sisters; the fact that something out of a certain group is shite doesn't mean all of it is. The program was showing us, our phones, our youtube vids etc.

@derdriui it's not about saying something is shit so all of it is. The whole movie is about a society where the deepest hopes and dreams are just instrumentalized by a giant powerful Television Network. So while I like this a lot, some people will watch it and find it unsetteling but will use it just for the fulfilment of their needs to revolt. But the real irony in this is, that people mitght find the movie fantastic but won't change. And that's what the movie is about, imo.
