In a world where people like to travel huge distances, aircraft are a vital part of our modern way of life. They allow us to cross continents in a matter of hours… but, as more people travel, the industry not only needs to look at ways of offering more capacity… but also doing so while significantly reducing the amount of pollution that’s released. The latest technologies have enabled aircraft designers to come up with ideas like never before, and by taking a completely different approach are beginning to shape what the industry will look like in the coming years. From fully electric power, to re-designed shapes, faster speeds, and entirely new fuels… it’s time to take to the skies, as we look through 15 plane concepts that will change travel forever.

Concorde is to small to be brought back the USA did team with the Russian Tupolev which was bigger but needed full AB Reheat to go super-sonic severely limiting it's range, however in this US Russian project they gave the Tu-144 the engines from the Tupolev Tu-160 Blackjack to give the Concordski super-cruise ability it was just research

People don't want to travel to airfields, large or small, to be herded on to planes. They want to travel city centre to city centre and the high speed train is a comfortable alternative that takes little or no longer from departure to arrival. The technology already exists.

None of the designs considered escape mechanisms for passengers and crew before an unavoidable crash. Only combat attack planes and bombers have escape seats. It is time to design something to save lives on civilian passenger airliners before a crash. It will cost millions extra but lives have infinite value. Thanks.

It's always interesting to see how technology is evolving and to anticipate the impact of change. One issue raised scares me--a potential trade war between Boeing, Airbus, and the new Chinese/Russian aircraft company. At present, industrial espionage is an ongoing problem. Throw in LawFare as global tech companies sue each other in order to gain total control over the market--monopoly power requires government force. It's not acknowledged, but direct action in the form of industrial sabotage, campaigns to slander corporate rivals, even extortion of executives takes place now. In the past piracy was used to drive off rival corporations. When anything goes because "it's just business," expect everything.

I makes me hopeful that there are so many possible solutions, and some that aren't too far from commercial reality. I think long haul may have to just look at being as efficient as they can with jet fuel. Although the synthetic fuel being developed for F1 might be an option.

The one thing people who talk about electric or hydrogen powered vehicles never talk about is where do you get the electricity or hydrogen. If either were more efficient or less polluting, industry would have already adopted it. In most cases, we would burn the fuel on the ground to charge the batteries, then claim that the aircraft is zero emissions. This is just a shell game.

If you use solar cells to power the on board electronics, it will not result in a massive reduction in fuel use, because they don't require much electricity. Also they wouldn't work at night, so you'd need heavy batteries. The speaker sure says a lot of weird stuff. Like the Russian aviation market being relevant, or claiming they could use Western engines.

Electric flight is not economical with Lithium batteries. There are new battery technologies like Aluminum Graphene by GMG, and Sodium ion Graphene by CATL, which have 3 times the capacity and can be charged 17 times faster than Lithium Ions. They are in trial testing and will be available for sale next year and 2026 respectively.

Sorry, not sorry to burst the bubble, but almost none of these concepts will ever fly commercially. Only the ones that are economically feasible and able to cram as much passengers as possible on a given flight. That's how airlines make money. Not by flying ridiculous 3-story monstrosity 🤣 Even much more 'reasonable' A380 is not hugely profitable. To all those delusional commenters here, aviation tech is hard. Really hard. Are you a 5th grader? Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that traps the sun's heat in the atmosphere and is gradually warming the planet. We are dumping far more CO2 into the atmosphere than all the plants and oceans can dispose of -- especially with destruction of the rain forests. Global warming will melt the ice caps and lead to catastrophic sea level rise. Humanity absolutely must work to LOWER CO2 in the atmosphere if we want to survive global warming.
@ip0071
