Flying is, statistically, one of the safest ways to travel over long distances… but, to maintain this record, aircraft are highly complex vehicles. While the parts are regularly checked, you still need to rely on the people operating the aircraft to be properly trained and to remain alert throughout the flight… because, if they don't, things can quickly go from bad to worse. It's time to buckle your belts and ensure your seat is in the upright position… as, from navigational errors to crashes, landing in the wrong places, and falling asleep at the controls… it's time to reveal the top 15 reckless pilot mistakes.

Also, by forgetting to lower the landing gear, the aircraft transformed into a Cessna 182. Amazing.

The funny part is that there's no reason you can't open a door or window mid-flight on one of those smaller general aviation planes. There's no pressure differential to suck anything out, and it just gets very loud and windy. It's usually possible to close them again, unless somehow they hinge backward and then you're not getting it closed.
@mirandahotspring4019

The first one about the door reminded me of a flight with a friend in a small Cessna. He was pilot and I was in the right seat. We noticed, well after take off, that my door was closed at the bottom but not at the top, the lock was shut but on the outside of the slot and the door was bent out at the top. He told me to try and shut it but I was unable to. He said to unlock the bottom, open it and slam it shut. I did, but as I opened it he put the plane in a steel turn and I was looking straight at the ground a few thousand feet down. I slammed the door and it shut properly. I asked what the hell was doing. He just smiled at me and said, "I thought that would make you give it a decent slam!"

@@hugoglenn9741 depends on the situation and the aircraft. But gear failure is very rare. And often right after a mechanic worked on it and didn't properly reinstall something on the mechanic's checklist.

C17s are built for short, rugged runways. Despite typically using longer runways in the US, they don't require 11000 ft of runway for landing. Even when faced with unexpected situations, like this one, the C17 handled it effortlessly.

@davedixon2068 4 ай бұрын
C17s are designed to operate from short dirt runways, while the runways they operate from in the US are longer they dont NEED 11000 ft of runway to land and apart from getting a surprise and having to adapt PDQ the C17 in question took it in its stride.
@hugoglenn9741
@hugoglenn9741 4 ай бұрын
There is never in military flying landing on the wrong runway is taken in “stride” especially with a four star general on board. Also just because a C-17 can land on a runway doesn’t mean it should. There is a thing called WBC and I believe it was exceeded on this “thin” runway. I think it cost the federal taxpayer some money to correct.
@davedixon2068
@davedixon2068 4 ай бұрын
@@hugoglenn9741 You obviously got the wrong end of the stick here. I said the C17 took the landing in its stride and was perfectly capable of landing safely on that runway, its designed for short, hot, and rough. What happened to the pilots after landing on the wrong airport and any inquiry is another matter, though fatigue can be enough if the crew are working in an operational scenario, and you might find the general was as embarrassed as anyone else. Actually the crew did pretty well to save the situation when they suddenly realised they only had a couple of thousand feet of runway instead of 11000ft. (the aircraft is capable but the crew are still the ones pushing the buttons and pulling the levers).
@jss27560
@jss27560 4 ай бұрын
I believe he was confused between feet and meters. it can land in somewhat over 3000 feet, not meters. now the weight would still be an issue probably the runway was not designed for the weight.
@markpell8979
@markpell8979 4 ай бұрын
@@jss27560 The C-17 as well as the C-130 are designed to operate on surprisingly short runways of 3,000' or less which do not necessarily need to be paved or smoothly graded, as these conditions occur often in warfare or other military situations and we need planes that can do the job at hand fairly routinely. I have even seen a C-5A operate from the 5,800' long (at that date) mountaintop runway at Yeager Airport near Charleston WV for demonstration purposes at an airshow. These tactical cargo and troop haulers have landing gear designed to distribute their weight widely across a sufficient surface area as to avoid punching through or sinking into pavement or earth with low weightbearing capacity. And no military pilot would 'mistake' Peter O. Knight Airport in Tampa for nearby MacDill AFB just because the runways are similarly aligned. You could fit Knight Field on any of several ramp areas at MacDill and the two airports look absolutely nothing alike. I think that whoever ordered or authorized it, this landing of a C-17 at a public General Aviation facility was intentional and a press release was made as a smokescreen to make it seem accidental. In fact, A C-17 or C-130 may have good reason to operate from small public airports occasionally and this would be a procedure that they would practice for, regardless of how that would be reported or portrayed later by the press. Obviously, short-field operations would not be conducted with excessive loads for the conditions. Higher loads naturally require longer, stronger runways.

You stated once in the air there isn’t much to worry about but in visual conditions ALL pilots still are required to “see and avoid” other traffic. General Aviation aircraft under visual flight rules can fly up to but not including 18,000 feet (FL180), realistically only 17,500 and don’t have to talk to ATC if outside of most classes of airspace.

Talking about the hanger one, I did my first solo out of Bankstown Australia first three hundred feet was over residential and factories climb to 800 then slip into the circuit at 1000 feet , same on landing on 21, to be honest there was nowhere to go but you get used 2 that. The first 300 hundred is the most critical will always remember my first solo climbed out 800 joined pattern 1000 and will always remember my thoughts , holy shit I think I even voiced that feeling and went wooooo then immediately went back to my training , aviate , navigate, communicate.

Watching “The Flight Channel” here on KZfaq, I have no learned that airplane crashes or any other problems they might have, it is always “pilot error.” And that is the reason that it has made me think twice before flying. I have to acknowledge that I am afraid of flying because you never know what is going to happen and how the pilot(s) are performing. Additionally, people don’t know how experienced pilots are and if they have had any incidents or problems before. After all, once you board a plane, you are at the mercy of the pilots! Having said that, I haven’t flown in a very long time for obvious reasons. Maybe I am too paranoid but it is what it is, what can I say. 🤷‍♀️

FUN FACT: Around the 10:00 mark when the narrator is telling us about that frozen river landing in Ruzziia, he casually mentions that temperatures can reach -40F and -40C, that's actually CORRECT! It just happens to work out that way and is strange when you consider that 32F is 0C! (Conversion formula is (degrees in F) - 32 x 5/9) Is it just me? Because I HAD to check that out, lol.
