@@tioa.p.1058 Because this is one of the least explained methods of using a survival tool. This dude actually broke it down with premade/ready-made signaling mirror AND explained how it works with a standard or stand-in mirrored/reflective objects. How was this not obvious?

You can lay on your back in the grass and signal helicopters coming to pick you up. Take my word. This is a great video about a much overlooked bit of survival gear.

Ranger Mike, great GREAT content! I love the simple yet informative way you explain and show the examples. I'm working on a redesign for the Flashlight SOS features for the iPhone and came across the idea of using the phone as a light beacon during the day and actually inform people through that feature! I'm crediting your video, it helped A LOT!

Thanks for watching Steve! To be completely honest, navigation is an area I'm a bit weak in. I taught very basic map and compass skills to kids in the past, but I don't think I could do a proper how-to navigation video for all ages.

I found that if I had the center between my two fingers that's not necessary when the final light ends - it ended up left of my fingers. So there is a lateral factor that is maganified. light may go through your fingers but doesn't point to the target necessarily- at least that's what my tests show.
@American-Plague

Hmmm..... try putting it in your forehead so it's centered between both eyes but just above them, then flash the mirror up and down between your fingers just like in the video. I think the mirror being on the side of your eye throws it off to the left or right just a little. If you try this, let me know what your results are. I'm curious now.

Good video , but regarding 180 ° Signalling its possible if you have two mirrors ie a car or truck mirror if you can see your target in the second mirror , shine the signal mirror on that image the bigger the second mirror the better .

Thank you for making this video, it was very informative. I felt the need to look into this subject because I live in a frontier town situated in a canyon, 100 miles from any city on the western slope in Colorado. We have been "invaded" by criminals who have crossed the border illegally because Colorado is a sanctuary state. We have been observing these groups using signaling mirrors in town and over the town on the cliffs. We are really wondering why someone would do this instead of using the cell phones that our government provides to them. Do you maybe have any thoughts as to why they would prefer this mode of communication? Btw, I think your ponytail is sexy, the other's are jealous. 😊

5:55 demonstration using the car in the distance would be an effective way to show you hit the target, because the reflectors on the car will show it very clearly. What does the spot on the purpose built signaling mirror with the diffraction grating look like when looking through it ? That's what I've been trying to find out, not sure how that works. Is it like seeing lens flare from a camera image?

hmm. I am trying this in my back yard, and it doesn't seem to work. What I'm hitting with my beam is not actually between my fingers, and yes, I've got the mirror right next to my eye. Yes, you can make a nice beam, but its hard to tell what you are hitting.
@sasquatchrosefarts
@sasquatchrosefarts 2 жыл бұрын
That's because he is an idiot. The mirror has to be exactly below your eye, and orient your fingers vertically. With the mirror at the side, you can be off by several degrees, and at any meaningful distance that is sufficiently inaccurate that it doesn't work. Best way is look through the Hole and use fingers. Then it's near impossible to mess it up. This video describes the Idiocracy perfectly. Buncha culls. The signal from a mirror is something like one half of one degree. So this guy and his approach are just wrong.

Completely off topic... I'm always a bit amused by the fact that holding up 2 fingers like at 6:51 is a mildly rude gesture in the UK (and I think Australia) but not in America. Americans don't think anything of it, because it means nothing there. To me, it's like he's saying "up yours" to that building.
@CreachterZ
@CreachterZ 3 жыл бұрын
Based on legend it is basically an FU gesture showing that a bowman still had both fingers as the French army would cut off archers middle fingers to prevent them from continuing in the battle. I’m pretty sure probably would have just killed them.
@st0rmforce
@st0rmforce 3 жыл бұрын
@@CreachterZ yeah, it's a often-told legend and a lot of people believe it. Historians generally say it's probably not true, for the reason you said: they'd just kill them. There's no actual evidence for it.

Nice video. Small correction - 3 short flashes means S in Morse code, 3 long flashes means O in Morse code, so 3 short - 3 long - 3 short means SOS.
@rangermike6651
@rangermike6651 6 жыл бұрын
That's correct, however 3 is universally understood to be a sign that you need help, whether it's 3 whistle blasts, 3 fires, or 3 flashes of light. You don't need to spell out the full "SOS" in Morse, though it's a good thing to know. Thanks for watching!
