Just a note about the French Revolution fact: There are many factors that went into why the French Revolution happened but it is interesting to point out the impact that the eruption had on the world and how that had a ripple effect on what happened in France some years after the eruption. 🙂

This is not a question expecting a reply, just a comment: If you remodeled you apartment in a way that allows you to accommodate your American relatives for weeks on end, you have become genuinely Icelandic! Family is important to Icelanders and you come across as being very fond of your family, wanting regular mutual visits. That way you fit right in.

Great video! and I love those facts! I recently spent a week in Iceland, 4 days in the Southern Region and 3 days in Reykjavik. It was amazing and it lived up to my idealised expectation of it. It has been top of my "Places to visit" list for over 20 years. I'm in my 30s now and I'd love to go again, maybe during one of the winters next time. I was in total awe over it being light even at 1am.

When the news are grim and scary your channel is the perfect one to turn to. I won’t claim everything is easy in Iceland (especially for an expat, I’d imagine), but it does take me away from Illinois

Your videos are the best resource I've seen for folks who want to visit Iceland or to learn about its culture and customs. Two items that are a tad "strange" about Iceland are the impact and abundance of geothermal energy - allowing Icelanders to open the windows in the winter without much concern over the cost for doing so and forgetting about plowing snow from the streets - and the Icelandic interest in genealogy (with so many Icelanders directly descended from the Vikings).

I moved back to Iceland for a bit in 1989 & one of my clearest memories is being in a pub in November of that year as the Berlin Wall was coming down & these US Navy guys buying beer for everyone.

This video reminded me that I've wondered before if you do daylight savings time in Iceland? I like the time change that we do in the U.S in November. But I'm not gonna lie the time change in March leaves me a little cranky for a couple of weeks. Lol. Also I hope you've finished remodeling your apartment. I've heard from others that remodeling your home can be an ordeal for some people. So I'm hoping your remodel went well (with the exception of the broken window). Thank you for the list of interesting things about Iceland.
@AllThingsIceland
@AllThingsIceland 2 жыл бұрын
Thankfully, we do not do daylight savings time. Changing the clocks has been talked about but I hope we just keep it the same because I don’t see the benefit. The remodel is mostly done. Just some little things here and there that need to be finished. 😊 Yes, remodeling is a huge undertaking here. My pleasure and thanks for the lovely comment and question.

@@AllThingsIceland I hope Iceland doesn't do daylight savings time either. I don't get the rationale behind it. And you're welcome.
@Halli50
@Halli50 2 жыл бұрын
Mucking around with Daylight Savings Time is utterly nonsensical for people living this far north (66°N in my case). During winter the day is so short it makes not difference - and the same goes for summer, we have 24 hours of daylight and my current problem is that on clear days, the sun starts shining through my bedroom window between 4 and 5 in the morning! It is only around the equinoxes that DST just MIGHT make sense - for a month or two max - so forget it! I experienced the spring DST switch in Scotland in 2006, and it was a genuine pain in the arse. The entire Scottish society had a full-body hiccup, the effects of which lasted for days. On that particular day, over 1/3 of people were one hour late for whatever they were supposed to do.
@EmorettaRobinson
@EmorettaRobinson 2 жыл бұрын
@@Halli50 Concerning DST that you experienced in Scotland I can understand why 1/3 of the people were an hour late on that day. For people in Iceland during those times where the sun is shining for 24 hours. I've wondered if most people have installed room darkening curtains to help with getting to sleep at night? I think that maybe Icelanders have grown accustomed to the elements there. From what I've seen in videos and on social media it is a stunningly beautiful place.
@Halli50
@Halli50 2 жыл бұрын
@@EmorettaRobinson, most Icelanders do not bother with "curfew" curtains, we are so used to this from birth. In my case, having a north-east facing bedroom window that allows direct sunlight in at 5 in the morning from early May through July is a bit over the top so I have darkening curtains installed.

Its also worth noting that it seems to be a tradition for it to snow on the first day of summer. Ok I made that up but it sure seems to happen a lot.

Actually, Greenland should appropriately have the name Iceland, seeing that Iceland is far greener than Greenland - or failing that, Iceland might be called Blackland, it is only green in the lowlands, most of the beaches are black, as are the highlands. The current names are due to a misleading Viking PR campaign that was never corrected.
