Allison Anderson could you talk about the guilt surrounding buying lots of stuff? And maybe the regrets of wasting money. I am feeling so guilty “wasting” money but I feel like I’m getting so caught up on what everyone else has and has bought I’m in a vicious circle.

I’ve been following your channel since the haul and makeup days but still love your content then and now. I’ve changed my habits as I’ve grown up as well. I think it’s just part of life, going from the cycle of “living your best life” to “living your best life financially and efficiently.” I’m happy that I’ve broken habits like buying makeup (I used to buy every MAC collection the first day they came out-haha) and now enjoying life in a different way with life experiences and seeing the world and what’s out there.

In college I definitely fell under the category of "KZfaq made me buy it". I followed all the beauty guru channels and had to have everything everyone else was hauling because I just got sucked up in the craziness, spending what little money I had on stuff I didn't need (particularly makeup that really didn't match my skin tone, but I had to buy that shade because my favourite KZfaqrs had it). My style and taste has certainly evolved in the minimalist, less-is-more direction. I stopped shopping for guest entertainment items. For instance, really nice place settings, all kinds of fancy serving ware, etc... I always wanted to throw dinner parties and be THE hostess, but then I finally realized I'm a hermit and had 2 good friends who I never invited over for dinner. Now I have just a few serving items because sometimes we host Thanksgiving, but that's it.

Also helps that you bump into the main problem with consumerism, which is that you have too much stuff and you don't have enough space for it so your house is super cluttered. And you care more about your money because you know you work hard for them and there are other things you can do with them.

I still get physical books, so instead of buying a 'thing' when I'm on a trip, I've decided to start buying postcards, writing a great trip memory on it, and using it as a bookmark. Can't wait to grow my collection when I travel again!

I LOVE that idea! I was buying magnets but getting annoyed with how cluttery they looked anywhere I put them. I like the idea of post cards! I might hole punch them and put them on a ring to keep them together as an album of sorts. Could even do this with a printed photo of each trip to make it more personal.

Alison I honestly think this represents such growth. Back in the earlier days of KZfaq, the beauty community was completely centred around consumerism, and I think everyone got caught up in the hype. I think of it now the way you described it in another video, buying for your fantasy self, eg buying heels when you hate wearing them. It’s so refreshing to see people like yourself moving away from this and being so much more conscious of what you’re buying, and now buying meaningful purchases and not buying for the sake of having “stuff”.

I also agree. I think also that as we get older we really figure out what we really like and tend to not buy as much stuff...and we also don’t NEED anything because you only need so much stuff and we already have everything that we need. My husband and I struggle around Christmas and birthdays to even find anything to buy each other. Most of the time we just order a pizza or something these days!

A good video I think would be a one about WHY you think you’ve shifted into a more minimal, intentional lifestyle. I’d love to see this video because what you said in this video could have been me speaking exactly. I started watching you years ago back when you did do hauls and love makeup and it wasn’t you that made me change but I happened to notice that I was starting to change my spending habits and becoming more minimal and intentional in my belongings. I dont know what caused the shift in mindset but it’s happened! Gotta admit tho I’m still a sucker for a sale and have a real online shopping habit I need to get in control. I just placed a Sephora VIB sale order 😆 I don’t wear makeup as much but I DO love trying new skincare. I love the direction your channel is taking and I’d love to see more videos about your current lifestyle ☺️

I love introspection, and I was thinking about this while watching this video and I’ve noticed this almost seems to be a trend among mostly millennials. This might be a stretch but I think perhaps in our day and age, we’ve come to understand the value of our money more (and things are more expensive for us now that they were for our parents when they were our age), basically out of necessity. This obviously isn’t the case for everyone, but maybe it is for the target demographic of these sorts of videos. I also personally think that my shift towards a more minimalist mindset has been, “How can I live on a budget while also maybe making a bit more sustainable purchases?” in terms of plastic, and fewer plastic purchases = more reusable things (it’s still an item to have, like reusable bags like Stasher, but ends up costing less ultimately). I also find myself more overwhelmed mentally when I have a lot of clutter in my spaces; I want the least amount of things around me while still helping me do what I need to do (I like functional items and decor). Those are just my thoughts!!

I feel like there’s such a negative connotation surrounding minimalism in the sense that it means all neutrals, having nothing and living a boring life. It doesn’t have to be that at all. For me, the key is to get fewer, better things that provide more versatility. Also, it’s about only having what you actually use. I have a large nail polish collection, but can honestly say I love and wear every color I own. I only own one foundation because that’s all I wear. I made sure that one foundation was buildable to get more versatility in coverage.
@jennmorrison4070
@jennmorrison4070 4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with you. I think people assume that minimalism means deprivation; that you're taking away things that give you pleasure, and that couldn't be more wrong! It's not about turning yourself into a monk lol. It's about realizing that if everything is "special"...nothing is special. My home has never been less cluttered, but more warm and joyful. My home was cold before minimalism, not after!
@eveespice13
@eveespice13 4 жыл бұрын
This is because most people are living the minimalistic lifestyle for trends. For KZfaq videos. She mentioned how she use to do makeup videos and hauls. That was the trend then. This is the trend now. The ones who truly understand the minimalist lifestyle are the normal folks like us.

Not gonna lie, the first KZfaq videos that pop up when I type in “minimalism” I see a bunch of beige colors, people who don’t own beds or chairs, and don’t own shampoo. The more extreme minimalists are the ones that are more seen
@kerryonmywaywardson9805

Totally agree. I think career minimalists end up being white guys in black v necks who are high on their own supply of packing 2 shirts for a vacation and hugging people about it, but an intentional lifestyle doesn't translate to being an obligatory boring person. I like the idea that minimalism is an appreciation of which material items add value to your life- material appreciation but not materialistic.

Same with me when it comes to fashion. I have a good amount of clothes and shoes. But everything is versatile, and I can mix and match. My husband thinks I own to much but I wear everything I have. Plus now when I shop it’s when I plan for it, not on impulse. I make a list of what I’m looking for and stick to it.

i went to waldorf schools growing up and really the only candles i have ever known are the 100% beeswax candles, we would do a candle making circle every year and it was always really fun and they smell great, are good for the environment and definitely don’t contain harmful chemicals, you don’t have to make your own of course but there’s plenty of places to buy them, locally and online (local supports bee keepers which is really important)

Allison! I have followed you since I was a sophomore in high school (I've been out of college for two years now), and I remember the day and the video that you decided that you were going to become a minimalist, and you went through pretty much every area of your Seattle loft apartment and purged every area down. It inspired me so much when I saw that and I have been pretty minimalist since then! I moved to college and fit everything I owned in two suitcases and a duffle bag. Now that I have a home, I obviously have more furniture stuff, but even to this day I still go through things with the lens that I think you would!

Literally been here since Revlon lip butter days, and had about the same curve. Hardly wear any makeup anymore, I do still wear nail polish, but I buy like one or two a year, as opposed to like 50... xD Now I splurge on yarn, mugs and coffee.. ok, and Mr. Puffs. lol (Food in general, but OMG, FIRST place I go after quarantine, I'm obsessed!) It's great to declutter, but I also try not to declutter too much either. Keep it contained, but also don't just throw away everything that doesn't "spark joy" on the moment.. Without being a hoarder, I'm crafty, and I love a good comeback story, giving an item second life by being clever is my superpower.. xD Like I LOVE me some seasonal decor, but I keep it versatile. I'll find a seasonal cushion, but the back is white! Boom, works year round! Instead of buying a ceramic pumpkin at Homegoods, now I'd rather buy raw wood pumpkins and stain or repaint them, instead of a sign that has some quirky joke about pumpkin spice lattes, I got a felt letter board, so I can switch it up! (Right now it says "My birthstone is a coffee bean", and I put a succulent and a mason jar full of coffee beans next to it as "decor" xD) And then it's not just something I put on a shelf and don't enjoy, it becomes part of the evolving environment of my home! I enjoy it more if I made it, as opposed to just bought it, and the joy lasts longer! You appreciate the things around you more.

I love this video! I've followed your channel for YEARRRS now and I remember when you used to do hauls but i feel like I've grown up with you and this kind of video definitely feels mature and it's so helpful to reexamine things I buy that I really don't need.

I’d love to see you go through the things you have kept! I’ve been on a similar journey as you. I have a capsule wardrobe and have for the past 4 years. I purged everything right before moving out of my moms home , and I’m so thankful I did. My own homes have been so me, calm and orderly since. It’s nice not to constantly be preoccupied with what I “ need” to buy next. And the things I have I appreciate ten times more. What things bring you joy? What items of clothing, home decor, makeup etc? I’d love to see!

I've been embracing minimalism and found that I love to shop but when I get the item I never use it and the thrill of that particular item is gone. I still have bottles of body mist/lotion from VS semi-annual sales. Bath and body works candles, trendy cult makeup, even school supplies that I am still working my way through years later. I've have a personal 'pan list' to remind myself of which products I'm focusing on using so I can eliminate the clutter!

I have always trusted and adored your recommendations, no matter what you've been talking about and sharing with us. I've loved following along with your journey and growth, but there will always be a special place in my heart for Amarixe 💗

I really, strongly resonated with this video. As I've gotten older, and because I've learned more about what *I* want, focused less on what's trendy, or what other people are doing, I have been able to ask myself what I want, what I need, and slowly getting rid of all the STUFF I've accumulated over the years for no reason. I'm FAR from perfect or knowledgeable in everything I want to move towards, but I'm learning a day at a time, and my Life has really improved. Thank you so much for sharing this. It helps to connect with others who are on a similar path.

love this! i also transitioned to some of the things you mentioned (using bar soaps instead of stuff that comes in plastic bottles, using rent the runway instead of buying event clothing, etc.) but also learned something new. I'm shocked you don't use foundation! It makes me want to visit a dermatologist to make sure my skincare is on point.

I am so glad I stumbled on this video. So many of the things that you are no longer buying, I have also stopped buying. I love the idea of renting a photographer and actually saving vacation memories in that way. I am currently working on streamlining my wardrobe and the idea renting a wardrobe for certain occasions is a wonderful idea. I have business clothes that I will never wear, because I now wear scrubs for work. My current plan is to take them to a consignment shop. I came up with a solution to remember some important memorabilia, without storing it. I am taking pictures of and making an album. It's amazing how much fuller your life is when you simplify it.

I’ve been following for quite a while, and I definitely remember all of the haul videos! They for sure played a part in my urge to go out and do the same thing lol. I’m happy to report that I think we’re both on the same path of eliminating certain purchases these days. Every time I light one of my bath and body works candles I think of the time you had one burning and your wall caught on fire!! Makes me nervous every single time! I too recently read something about candles being toxic and have chosen to no longer purchase the bath and body works candles (just using up what I have).. I think some soy candles are safe to burn, but I’m not exactly an expert on the topic. Great video! Took me down memory lane for sure (: Thanks, Allison!

My nail polish “graveyard” is still hung up in my childhood home! I was obsessed with nail polish and changing them every day with the acrylic holders on the wall. I joined the military and for 6 years, I could only use “flesh” colored nail colors so the appeal was basically nil.

I love this so much! My goal for this year was to switch to as many sustainable practices as possible and I am loving all the changes I've made. Last year I blocked all the fast fashion sites I used to frequent and that really helped. I will say, I love physical books so much, so I started frequenting my local library and it made me fall even more in love with reading. (although now during quarantine I don't have access to the library). The more I borrow from the library the more funding they get too, which makes me feel good and I love talking to the librarians, it's so charming!

Instead of candles, I’ve started using a essential oil diffuser (my daughter in law sells them). I really like it and know that it’s healthier.
